The current study focuses on giving a basic understanding of tubular graphene sheets or carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and points towards their role in fabricating elastomer composites. Since the properties and the performance of CNT reinforced elastomer composites predominantly depend on the rate of dispersion of fillers in the matrix, the physical and chemical interaction of polymer chains with the nanotubes, crosslinking chemistry of rubbers and the orientation of the tubes within the matrix, here, a thorough study of these topics is carried out. For this, various techniques of composite manufacturing such as pulverization, heterocoagulation, freeze drying, etc. are discussed by emphasizing the dispersion and alignment of CNTs in elastomers. The importance of the functionalization technique as well as the confinement effect of nanotubes in elastomer media is derived. In a word, this article is aimed exclusively at addressing the prevailing problems related to the CNT dispersion in various rubber matrices, the solutions to produce advanced high-performance elastomeric composites and various fields of applications of such composites, especially electronics. Special attention has also been given to the non-linear viscoelasticity effects of elastomers such as the Payne effect, Mullin's effect and hysteresis in regulating the composite properties. Moreover, the current challenges and opportunities for efficiently translating the extraordinary electrical properties of CNTs to rubbery matrices are also dealt with.

Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers have exceptionally higher specific strength and stiffness compared with other high-performance fibers. However, the interfacial adhesion and compressive performance of UHMWPE fiber-reinforced polymer composites (FPCs) are extremely low. The challenges are to achieve load transfer at the interface between the fiber and matrix at a molecular level. Here, we show that plasma pre-treatment of UHMWPE fibers followed by coating with polypyrrole (PPy) results in an 848% improvement in the interfacial adhesion and 54% enhancement in compressive performance. This method takes advantage of a toughening mechanism observed in spider silk and collagen, which the hydrogen bond power the load transfer. The results showed that these improvements of interfacial adhesion and compressive strength were attributed to hydrogen-bonding interactions between the plasma pre-treated UHMWPE and PPy, which improves the fiber-matrix-fiber load transfer process. In addition, the hydrogen-bonded PPy coatings also endowed durability electrical conductivity properties of the UHMWPE fiber.

Metallic tubes have been extensively studied for their crashworthiness as they closely resemble automotive crash rails. Recently, the demand to improve fuel economy and reduce vehicle emissions has led automobile manufacturers to explore the crash properties of light weight materials such as fibre reinforced polymer composites, metallic foams and sandwich structures in order to use them as crash barriers. This paper discusses the response of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) tubes and their failure mechanisms during side impact. The energy absorption of CFRP tubes is compared to similar Aluminium tubes. The response of the CFRP tubes during impact was modelled using Abaqus finite element software with a composite fabric material model. The material inputs were given based on standard tension and compression test results and the in-plane damage was defined based on cyclic shear tests. The failure modes and energy absorption observed during the tests were well represented by the finite element model.

Metallic tubes have been extensively studied for their crashworthiness as they closely resemble automotive crash rails. Recently, the demand to produce lighter weight, yet safer vehicles has led to the need to understand the crash behaviour of novel materials, such as fibre reinforced polymer composites, metallic foams and sandwich structures. This paper discusses the static indentation response of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) tubes. The side impact on a CFRP tube involves various failure mechanisms. This paper highlights these mechanisms and compares the energy absorption of CFRP tubes with similar Aluminium tubes. The response of the CFRP tubes during bending was modelled using ABAQUS finite element software with a composite fabric material model. The material inputs were given based on standard tension and compression test results and the in-plane damage was defined based on cyclic shear tests. The failure modes and energy absorption observed during the tests were well represented by the finite element model.

An experimental investigation of coir mesh reinforced mortar (CMRM) is conducted using nonwoven coir mesh matting. The main parameters in this study are the fiber volume fraction (number of mesh layers) and fiber surface treatment with a wetting agent. The composites are subjected to the four-point bending test. The short-term mechanical properties of CMRM are discussed. Scanning electron micrograph analysis is used to observe the fiber—matrix interfacial characteristics. The results indicate that the addition of coir mesh to mortar significantly improves the composite post-cracking flexural stress, toughness, ductility, and toughness index, compared to plain mortar materials. The Albatex © FFC wetting agent (2-ethylhexanol) can effectively improve water absorption of coir fiber and enhance the fiber—matrix bonding strength. These coir mesh reinforced composites may be useful in civil engineering applications.

The mechanical properties of aluminium foams can be improved by matrix reinforcement and resin-impregnation methods. In the present study, aluminium foams were reinforced by both ceramic particulate reinforcing of the aluminium matrix and resin-impregnating pores. The mechanical properties and the energy absorption of the reinforced aluminium foams were investigated by dynamic and quasi-static compression. Results indicated that the ceramic particle additions of CBN, SiC and B4C in aluminium foams increase the peak stress, elastic modulus and energy absorption of the aluminium foams, under both conditions of dynamic and quasi-static compression. Moreover, the aluminium foams with and without ceramic particle additions exhibited obvious strain rate sensitivity during dynamic compression. Furthermore, the resin-impregnation improves the mechanic properties and energy absorption of aluminium foams significantly. However, aluminium foams with resin-impregnation showed negligible strain rate sensitivity under dynamic compression. It is reported that both the ceramic particle addition and resin-impregnation can be effective techniques to improve the mechanical and the energy absorption properties of aluminium foams.

This paper describes a theoretical approach to compare two types of fiber reinforced composite materials for femoral component of hip implants. The natural fiber reinforced composite implant is compared with carbon fiber reinforced composite and the results are evaluated against the control solution of a metallic implant made of titanium alloy. With identical geometry and loading condition, the composite implants assumed lower stresses, thus induced more loads to the bone and consequently reduced the risk of stress shielding, whilst the natural fiber reinforced composite showed promising result compared with carbon fibers. However, natural fibers, as well as carbon fibers, lack the power to improve interface debonding due to excessive loads in interface. Nevertheless, natural fiber reinforced composite could be an appropriate alternative given its capability of tailoring and achieving the optimal fiber orientation and robust design.

The influence of the mixing parameters on the synthesis of Al–SiCp reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) by the stir casting technique is investigated through a water model. The effects of some important mixing parameters such as impeller blade angle, rotating speed, direction of impeller rotation and effect of baffles are investigated and optimized. The results have shown that the axial concentration variation of natural graphite during stirring in the presence of four vertical baffles is 1.0 wt% against in the absence of baffles it is increased to 2.3 wt%. The variations observed in natural graphite concentration in water during mixing are in close agreement with the earlier modeling and limited experimental studies reported on the real molten aluminum–SiC system. Semi-empirical correlations arrived at between the dimensionless numbers for stirred water – natural graphite slurries are Po = Re−0.0545 Fr−1.099 and Po = Re−0.0219 Fr−1.0382 for clockwise and counter clockwise rotation respectively.

The present study analyzes the morphological transformations of reaction products i.e., MgO, MgAl2O4 occurring during the reaction between SiO2 and Al-Mg alloy in Al-Mg-SiO2 composite processed by the liquid metallurgy technique. Different phases of platelet and hexagonal morphologies are detected and their composition analysis by EDS has confirmed them as being transition phases existing between MgO, MgAl2O4 and Al2O3. This study has also revealed the gradual transformation of (i) MgO needles to octahedral MgAl2O4 through Mg-Al-Si-O and Mg-Al-O transition phases having platelet morphologies and (ii) MgAl2O4 to Al2O3 through hexagonal transition phases on holding of Al-5Mg-SiO2 and Al-1Mg-SiO2 composites respectively at 1023K. Fully developed α-Al2O3 crystals are not observed under the present experimental conditions, wherein the Mg content is well above the equilibrium Mg content required for the formation of stable Al2O3 (<0.05 wt. %).

Electrospun nanofibres have emerged as important fibrous materials for diverse applications. They have been shown excellent toughening results when they are applied as interlayer materials between carbon/epoxy laminas in the structural carbon fibre reinforced epoxy matrix composites. They also exhibit synergistic modification effects when they are combined with carbon nanofibres in the thermosetting polymer matrix. In this study, electrospun polyetherketone cardo (PEK-C) nanofibres were used in two ways: directly electrospun onto the surface of carbon fabric [1], and blended with epoxy resin in the form of PEK-C/VGCNF (vapour grown carbon nanofibre) composite nanofibres[2].The interlaminar fracture toughness, flexural properties and thermal mechanical properties of the modified systems were investigated.

Nanoparticle reinforced metal matrix possess much better mechanical properties over microparticle reinforced metal matrix composites as well as corresponding monolithic matrix materials. However, the fabrication methods of nanoparticle reinforced metal matrix composites are complex and expensive. This paper investigates and discusses the mechanisms of all the fabrication process, such as powder metallurgy, liquid metallurgy, compocasting and hybrid methods, available in the literature. This gives an insight on challenges associated with different processes and ways to improve the fabrication processes. It is found that modified traditional fabrication processes are mainly applied for these materials. The main problem is to achieve reasonably uniform distribution of nanoparticle reinforcement in the methods other than mechanical alloying when the volume or weight percent of reinforcement is higher (> 1%).
