An electrochemically integrated multi-electrode array namely the wire beam electrode (WBE) and noise signatures analysis have been applied in novel combinations to study crevice corrosion behaviour in the presence of pits. Characteristic electrochemical noise signatures were found to correlate with characteristic changes in WBE current distribution maps, which indicate corrosion rates distributions, corrosion patterns and the degree of pitting and crevice corrosion. Specifically, two characteristic noise patterns were observed: (i) the characteristic noise pattern of quick potential changes towards more negative direction with no recovery (termed noise signature I) was found to correspond with the initiation and stabilization of the anode inside crevice; and (ii) the characteristic noise pattern of the cyclic potential oscillation at a constant frequency (termed noise signature II) was found to correspond with the stable anodic dissolution in the occluded cavity site in WBE current distribution maps. A new parameter namely the localization parameter (LP) has been proposed to describe the degree of localization. The LP for crevice corrosion was found to be low compared to that for pitting corrosion.

A commonly employed method of corrosion rate measurement is to determine the electrochemical impedance of the corroding material. One technique for estimating the impedance is the noise impedance calculation. While it has been shown to yield useful results, there are a number of problems that require attention. This paper identifies some of those problems-specifically, those of detrending and resolution-and provides a solution that allows continuous, time-varying noise resistance and noise impedance calculations to be performed with known time, frequency, and magnitude resolutions. Applications to synthetic and experimental data are included as illustrations

Chromatographic detection responses are recorded digitally. A peak is represented ideally by a Guassian distribution. Raising a Guassian distribution to the power ‘n’ increases the height of the peak to that power, but decreases the standard deviation by √n. Hence there is an increasing disparity in detection responses as the signal moves from low level noise, with a corresponding decrease in peak width. This increases the S/N ratio and increases peak to peak resolution. The ramifications of these factors are that poor resolution in complex chromatographic data can be improved, and low signal responses embedded at near noise levels can be enhanced. The application of this data treatment process is potentially very useful in 2D-HPLC where sample dilution occurs between dimension, reducing signal response, and in the application of post-reaction detection methods, where band broadening is increased by virtue of reaction coils. In this work power functions applied to chromatographic data are discussed in the context of (a) complex separation problems, (b) 2D-HPLC separations, and (c) post-column reaction detectors.

A theoretical analysis on the electrochemical noise resistance is carried out based on basic electrochemical corrosion theory. It is proven that the noise resistance is equivalent to the polarisation resistance and is in fact a special form of linear polarisation resistance, namely statistical linear polarisation resistance.

A layer-encoded interactive evolutionary algorithm (IEA) for optimization of design parameters of a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) low noise amplifier is presented. The IEA comprises a combination of the genetic algorithm (GA) and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique. The layer-encoding structure allows human intervention in order to accelerate the process of evolution, whereas the GA and PSO technique are incorporated to enhance both global and local searches. With this combination of features, the proposed IEA has shown to be efficient in meeting all requirements and constraints of the MMIC. In addition, the IEA is able to optimize noise figure, current, and power gain of the MMIC amplifier design.

Random fluctuations of the electrical quantities (electrode potential and cell current) in electrochemical systems commonly are referred to as electrochemical noise (ECN). The ECN signal for the corrosion of mild steel in reinforced concrete specimen was analyzed with the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). The original signal was transformed into a time-frequency phase plane with colors representing the coefficients of the CWT. The signal shows a self-similarity structure in the phase plane. Through this way, the chaotic nature of corrosion process is manifested.

In this paper, an interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) approach is developed to optimize design variables for a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) low noise amplifier. A layered encoding structure is employed to the problem representation in genetic algorithm to allow human intervention in the circuit design variable tuning process. The MMIC amplifier design is synthesized using the Agilent Advance Design System (ADS), and the IGA is proposed to tune the design variables in order to meet multiple constraints and objectives such as noise figure, current and simulated power gain. The developed IGA is compared with other optimization techniques from ADS. The results showed that the IGA performs better in achieving most of the involved objectives.

Australian fur seals breed on thirteen islands located in the Bass Strait, Australia. Land access to these islands is restricted, minimising human presence but boat access is still permissible with limitations on approach distances. Thirty-two controlled noise exposure experiments were conducted on breeding Australian fur seals to determine their behavioural response to controlled in-air motor boat noise on Kanowna Island (39°10′S, 146°18′E). Our results show there were significant differences in the seals' behaviour at low (64–70 dB) versus high (75–85 dB) sound levels, with seals orientating themselves towards or physically moving away from the louder boat noise at three different sound levels. Furthermore, seals responded more aggressively with one another and were more alert when they heard louder boat noise. Australian fur seals demonstrated plasticity in their vocal responses to boat noise with calls being significantly different between the various sound intensities and barks tending to get faster as the boat noise got louder. These results suggest that Australian fur seals on Kanowna Island show behavioural disturbance to high level boat noise. Consequently, it is recommended that an appropriate level of received boat sound emissions at breeding fur seal colonies be below 74 dB and that these findings be taken into account when evaluating appropriate approach distances and speed limits for boats.

Where the speed-up of technology led Marshall McLuhan into the realm of ‘pattern-recognition’ the game has now been ratcheted up a further notch. Technologies themselves are being creatively re-designed and reconfigured to hunt down the Snark (see Lewis Carrol, 1898), a game in which the skill of identifying gaps, ruptures, of cracking the surface, remains critical. In this situation a New Minimalism has taken shape in which narrative and content have not been erased exactly but have retreated, to be resident in the architecture and flow of the apparatus itself. For Marcia Jane this is where the story now sits, to be laid bare on the Gallery floor.
