The addition of nano-sized ceramic particles to the plastic crystal ethyl-methyl pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)amide (P12TFSA) has been investigated by means of DSC and conductivity. The thermal behaviour of the plastic crystal as a function of filler content suggests that the filler particles decrease the onset temperature of the melting slightly at high loadings, however they do not decrease the crystallinity of the material. Furthermore, the IV → III transition decreases in intensity, indicating that the addition of filler increases the possibility for the crystal to remain in metastable rotator phases also at lower temperatures. The conductivity shows a more than one order of magnitude increase with the addition of filler, with a filler concentration dependence that levels out above ~ 10 wt.% TiO2.

N,N-Dimethyl-pyrrolidinium iodide, and the effect of doping with LiI, has been investigated using DSC, NMR, and impedance spectroscopy. It was found that the addition of a small amount of LiI enhances the ionic conductivity by up to 3 orders of magnitude for this ionic solid. Furthermore, a slight decrease in phase transition onset temperatures, as well as the appearance of a superimposed narrow line in the 1H NMR spectra with dopant, suggest that the LiI facilitates the mobility of the matrix material, possibly by the introduction of vacancies within the lattice. 7Li NMR line width measurements reveal a narrow Li line width, decreasing in width and increasing in intensity with temperature, indicating mobile Li ions.

Pulsed field gradient NMR is a powerful method for the measurement of diffusion coefficients in liquids and solids and has begun to attract much attention in the ionic liquids field. However, aspects of the methodology as traditionally applied to solutions may not be uniformly applicable in these more viscous and chemically complex systems. In this paper we present data which shows that the Pulsed Gradient Spin Echo (PGSE) method in particular suffers from intrinsic internal gradients and can produce apparent diffusion coefficients which vary by as much as 20% for different 1H nuclei within a given moleculean obvious anomaly. In contrast, we show that the Pulsed Gradient Stimulated Echo method does not suffer from this problem to the same extent and produces self-consistent data to a high degree of accuracy (better than 1%). This level of significance has allowed the detection, in this work, of subtle mixing effects in [C3mpyr][NTf2] and [C4mpyr][NTf2] mixtures.

Ionic liquids (ILs) form a novel class of electrolytes with unique properties that make them attractive candidates for electrochemical devices. In the present study a range of electrolytes were prepared based on the IL N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide ([C3mpyr][NTf2]) and LiNTf2 salt. The traditional organic solvent diluents vinylene carbonate (VC), ethylene carbonate (EC), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and toluene were used as additives at two concentrations, 10 and 20 mol%, leading to a ratio of about 0.6 and 1.3 diluent molecules to lithium ions, respectively. Most promisingly, the lithium ions see the greatest effect in the presence of all the diluents, except toluene, producing a lithium self-diffusion coefficient of almost a factor of 2.5 times greater for THF at 20 mol%. Raman spectroscopy subtly indicates that THF may be effectively breaking up a small portion of the lithium ion–anion interaction. While comparing the measured molar conductivity to that calculated from the self-diffusion coefficients of the constituents indicates that the diluents cause an increase in the overall ion clustering. This study importantly highlights that selective ion transport enhancement is achievable in these materials.

We present the development of a 10–100 nanometer thick surface film upon pure Mg on exposure to an ionic liquid (IL) based on the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (TFSA) anion. This film formation is the result of the oxidative reactivity of the metal in the IL, with the subsequent effect of ultimately protecting the underlying metal from corrosion in aqueous chloride containing solution. Film formation was studied in the IL using an electrochemical droplet cell. It was seen that this film is adherent and subsequently facilitates appreciable protection against corrosion as judged by subsequent electrochemical testing in the form of potentiodynamic polarization and impedance spectroscopy, along with direct observation. The physical film morphology was studied by electron microscopy and focused ion beam.

Practical lithium-metal batteries are the ultimate goal of battery researchers. The addition of a zwitterionic compound (see Figure) to an ionic liquid electrolyte doped with a lithium salt results in a 100% enhancement of the current densities achieved in the cycling of a lithium-metal cell. This phenomenon arises due to increased lithium-ion mobility or a reduced solid electrolyte interphase layer resistance.

New plasticized polymer electrolytes were synthesized based on poly ethylene oxide (PEO), Poly (N,N-dimethylamino-ethyl-methacrylate) (PDMAEMA), LiN(CF3SO2)2 (LITFSI) as the salt and tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether(tetraglyme) and EC + PC as plasticizers. The preparation and characterization of the polymer electrolytes were investigated as a function of temperature and various concentrations of LITFSI. Impedance spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) were used to characterize the effects of various temperature, lithium salt concentration and two plasticizers on conductivity. The complex of PDMAEMA/PEO/LiTFSI/tetraglyme (S2) exhibits higher conductivity (4.74 × 10−4 S cm−1at 25 °C) than PDMAEMA/PEO/LiTFSI/EC + PC (S1).

A lithium-polymer battery based on an ionic liquid–polymer electrolyte (IL–PE) composite membrane operating at room temperature is described. Utilizing a polypyrrole coated LiV3O8 cathode material, the cell delivers >200 mAh g−1 with respect to the mass of the cathode material. Discharge capacity is slightly higher than those observed for this cathode material in standard aprotic electrolytes; it is thought that this is the result of a lower solubility of the LiV3O8 material in the IL–PE composite membrane.

Commonly used for purification, alumina and silica are found to contaminate ionic liquids with particles; these particles cannot be removed easily and can have a non-negligible impact on the electrochemical, spectroscopic and physical properties of an ionic liquid, including its nucleation and crystallisation kinetics.

High-performance dye-sensitized solar cells incorporating electrochemically stable non-volatile electrolytes are especially desirable devices. In particular, ionic liquid systems based on ethylmethylimidazolium dicyanamide seem to be promising for this purpose. These have triggered our interest in the properties of further ethylmethylimidazolium-based ionic liquids with anions which are close relatives of dicyanamide. In this study, the effect of three different anions, tricyanomethanide, dicyanamide and thiocyanate, on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells have been investigated. Both the short circuit photocurrent and conversion efficiency are increased with decreasing viscosity of the ionic liquids under comparable conditions. A conversion efficiency of 2.1% at 30% light intensity was observed for the cell containing the tricyanomethanide salt, which has lowest viscosity among the three ionic liquids, while efficiencies of 0.7% and 1.7% at the same light intensity were observed in the case of dicyanamide and thiocyanate salts, respectively, as an electrolyte.

The crystal structures of several low-melting salts containing trihalide ions, namely 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tribromide ([C2mim][Br3]), 1-ethyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium tribromide ([C2mpyr][Br3]), and 1-propyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium triiodide ([C3mpyr][I3]), are reported for the first time. Thermal analysis reveals that the tribromide salts are lower-melting than their monohalide analogues. Analysis of the crystal structures allows examination of the influence of the anions on the physical properties of the salts.

The use of ionic liquids (ILs) as electrolytes for electromechanical actuators based on polypyrroles (PPy's) is described. The composition of the electrolytes has a significant effect on the electrochemical properties of the PPy actuator and subsequently on actuator performance, improving cycle life and strain generated. The actuator performance in ionic liquid electrolytes is significantly better than that in traditional organic and aqueous electrolytes.
