A stable aqueous electrolyte film is formed between a mercury drop and a flat mica surface due to electrical double-layer repulsion when a negative potential is applied to the mercury. Film thickness has been measured as a function of applied potential while keeping the film pressure constant. By making measurements in this way, it is possible to map the data directly according to the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. An excellent fit to the data is obtained, providing direct evidence for this classical equation and its use as the basis of the Gouy-Chapman model of the diffuse double layer in electrolyte solutions.

This work has focused on measuring the adhesion forces on both untreated and atmospheric helium plasma treated single jute fibre surfaces using scanning probe microscopy (SPM). The measurements were conducted on three differently aged surfaces for one week, three weeks and six weeks using a standard silicon nitride tip in force-volume (f-v) mode. Up to 256 adhesion data points were collected from various locations on the surface of the studied fibres using in-house developed software and the resulting data were statistically analysed by the histogram method. Results obtained from this analysis method were found to be very consistent with a small statistical variation. The work of adhesion, Wa, was calculated from measured adhesion force using the Johnson–Kendall–Roberts (JKR) and Derjaguin–Muller–Toporov (DMT) models. Increases in both adhesion force and work of adhesion were observed on jute fibre with certain levels of atmospheric plasma treatment and ageing time.

The collection contains an EBSD map of AZ31 compressed to 1% strain at room temperature in a direction parallel to the extrusion direction. The map was collected as part of an investigation into the role of twinning in the occurrence of a yield point elongation during deformation.

This dataset comprises morphological image-based data of the cross and longitudinal sections of the powder particles and fibres of the bamboo plant, gathered using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SED). The morophology of the treated and untreated samples was compared before and after several chemical treatments. The diameter of the fibre and porous structure was measured, giving an indication of particle size.

Radiolabeled diacetylbis(4-methylthiosemicarbazonato)copperII [CuII(atsm)] is an effective positron-emission tomography imaging agent for myocardial ischemia, hypoxic tumors, and brain disorders with regionalized oxidative stress, such as mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, and lactic acidosis with stroke-like episodes (MELAS) and Parkinson’s disease. An excessively elevated reductive state is common to these conditions and has been proposed as an important mechanism affecting cellular retention of Cu from CuII(atsm). However, data from whole-cell models to demonstrate this mechanism have not yet been provided. The present study used a unique cell culture model, mitochondrial xenocybrids, to provide whole-cell mechanistic data on cellular retention of Cu from CuII(atsm). Genetic incompatibility between nuclear and mitochondrial encoded subunits of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) in xenocybrid cells compromises normal function of the ETC. As a consequence of this impairment to the ETC we show xenocybrid cells upregulate glycolytic ATP production and accumulate NADH. Compared to control cells the xenocybrid cells retained more Cu after being treated with CuII(atsm). By transfecting the cells with a metal-responsive element reporter construct the increase in Cu retention was shown to involve a CuII(atsm)-induced increase in intracellular bioavailable Cu specifically within the xenocybrid cells. Parallel experiments using cells grown under hypoxic conditions confirmed that a compromised ETC and elevated NADH levels contribute to increased cellular retention of Cu from CuII(atsm). Using these cell culture models our data demonstrate that compromised ETC function, due to the absence of O2 as the terminal electron acceptor or dysfunction of individual components of the ETC, is an important determinant in driving the intracellular dissociation of CuII(atsm) that increases cellular retention of the Cu.

The three-dimensional interfacial grain boundary network in a fully austenitic high-manganese steel was studied as a function of all five macroscopic crystallographic parameters (i.e. lattice misorientation and grain boundary plane normal) using electron backscattering diffraction mapping in conjunction with focused ion beam serial sectioning. The relative grain boundary area and energy distributions were strongly influenced by both the grain boundary plane orientation and the lattice misorientation. Grain boundaries terminated by (1 1 1) plane orientations revealed relatively higher populations and lower energies compared with other boundaries. The most frequently observed grain boundaries were {1 1 1} symmetric twist boundaries with the Σ3 misorientation, which also had the lowest energy. On average, the relative areas of different grain boundary types were inversely correlated to their energies. A comparison between the current result and previously reported observations (e.g. high-purity Ni) revealed that polycrystals with the same atomic structure (e.g. face-centered cubic) have very similar grain boundary character and energy distributions. © 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. The detection of avian viruses in wild populations has considerable conservation implications. For DNA-based studies, feathers may be a convenient sample type for virus screening and are, therefore, an increasingly common technique. This is despite recent concerns about DNA quality, ethics, and a paucity of data comparing the reliability and sensitivity of feather sampling to other common sample types such as blood. Alternatively, skeletal muscle tissue may offer a convenient sample to collect from dead birds, which may reveal viraemia. Here, we describe a probe-based quantitative real-time PCR for the relative quantification of beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), a pathogen of serious conservation concern for parrots globally. We used this method to test for BFDV in wild crimson rosellas (Platycercus elegans), and compared three different sample types. We detected BFDV in samples from 29 out of 84 individuals (34.5%). However, feather samples provided discordant results concerning virus presence when compared with muscle tissue and blood, and estimates of viral load varied somewhat between different sample types. This study provides evidence for widespread infection of BFDV in wild crimson rosellas, but highlights the importance of sample type when generating and interpreting qualitative and quantitative avian virus data.

Short-range-order (SRO) has been quantitatively evaluated in an Fe-18Al (at%) alloy using atom probe tomography (APT) data and by calculation of the generalised multicomponent short-range order (GM-SRO) parameters, which have been determined by shell-based analysis of the three-dimensional atomic positions. The accuracy of this method with respect to limited detector efficiency and spatial resolution is tested against simulated D03 ordered data. Whilst there is minimal adverse effect from limited atom probe instrument detector efficiency, the combination of this with imperfect spatial resolution has the effect of making the data appear more randomised. The value of lattice rectification of the experimental APT data prior to GM-SRO analysis is demonstrated through improved information sensitivity.
