Discusses the corruption-cloud hanging over the Victoria police drug squad. What does it mean for criminal investigations and trials? And, speaking more generally, what is it about the drugs-trade and the way the law deals with it - that can lead law enforcers down the wrong path?

Intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) is a small protein that binds long-chain dietary fatty acids in the cytosol of the columnar absorptive epithelial cells (enterocytes) of the intestine. The binding cavity of I-FABP is much larger than is necessary to bind a fatty acid molecule, which suggests that the protein may be able to bind other hydrophobic and amphipathic ligands such as lipophilic drugs. Herein we describe the binding of three structurally diverse lipophilic drugs, bezafibrate, ibuprofen (both R- and S-isomers) and nitrazepam to I-FABP. The rank order of affinity for I-FABP determined for these compounds was found to be R-ibuprofen {approx} bezafibrate > S-ibuprofen >> nitrazepam. The binding affinities were not directly related to aqueous solubility or partition coefficient of the compounds; however, the freely water-soluble drug diltiazem showed no affinity for I-FABP. Drug-I-FABP interaction interfaces were defined by analysis of chemical shift perturbations in NMR spectra, which revealed that the drugs bound within the central fatty acid binding cavity. Each drug participated in a different set of interactions within the cavity; however, a number of common contacts were observed with residues also involved in fatty acid binding. These data suggest that the binding of non-fatty acid lipophilic drugs to I-FABP may increase the cytosolic solubility of these compounds and thereby facilitate drug transport from the intestinal lumen across the enterocyte to sites of distribution and metabolism.

Provides a detailed description and analysis over time of the use of medication to manage the behaviour of individuals with intellectual disability. Drug use was extensive and reasons provided were commonly outside those permitted by legislation. The findings enabled critical appraisal of current monitoring procedures and recommendations regarding policy and practice.

This research describes the development of several innovative methodologies for the rapid and sensitive determination of analytes of forensic and social significance. The project incorporated separation technology and chemiluminescence (light from a chemical reaction) to determine the active compounds and excipients in illicit drugs and natural products including 'magic mushrooms'

The number of older Australians with one or multiple chronic diseases is increasing. This thesis presents a model to assist in identifying current older patients with multiple illnesses and taking multiple medications who are at risk of experiencing an adverse drug reaction if they are prescribed a newly released drug.

To describe the presence of alcohol, cannabis and amphetamines in work-related injury deaths in Victoria, 2001–6, an observational study of work-related deaths reported to the State Coroner's Office, Victoria, Australia was conducted. Case and postmortem forensic toxicology data were obtained from the National Coroner's Information System for work-related injury deaths with positive toxicology screens. Over 6 years there were 43 worker deaths in a total of 355 unintentional work-related injury deaths. The coroner mentioned the presence of alcohol/drugs in 22 of the 43 worker deaths with positive toxicology screens. Toxicology screens were positive for alcohol and/or drugs in 79 work-related deaths overall. Overall, alcohol was present in 26 (7%) work-related deaths and cannabis or amphetamines in 20 (6%). Incidents were mainly transport related. Alcohol and/or drugs were present in a significant portion of work-related deaths. Research is needed to determine the relative contribution of alcohol and drugs compared with other contributing factors to work-related deaths.
