The current study examined the consistency of investigative interviewers' performance (n=31) across three distinct interview paradigms: (a) a mock interview where an adult actor played the role of a child recalling abuse, (b) a mock interview where a school child recalled an innocuous event that was staged at the child's school, and (c) a field interview where the interviewer elicited a statement of abuse from a child. Performance was measured by calculating the proportion of open-ended and leading questions, and by eliciting expert ratings of the presence of a range of problem behaviours commonly exhibited by interviewers. Overall, the performance of individual interviewers was relatively stable across the tasks. Heterogeneity in stability, however, differed according to the type of question and the nature of the event being examined. In particular, the mock interview paradigm where the adult acted the role of an alleged child abuse victim produced a measure of performance that was more similar to the field interview than the interview where a school child recalled an innocuous event. The implications of the findings for trainers, and directions for future research, are discussed.

Use of hydrogen as a temporary alloying element in Ti alloys is an attractive approach to improve the mechanical properties of the materials, enhance processability and thereby reduce manufacturing costs. In this paper, the hydrogen diffusion process and the phase transformation both between Ti particles and in Ti sheets were simulated to analyze the mechanism of hydrogen diffusion in different phases (α-Ti, β-Ti and TiHx). With the simulation based on the kinetics and thermodynamics, quantitative behaviors of the hydrogen diffusion and the phase transformation were analyzed. The simulation results provide an insight into the diffusion process and improve the fundamental understanding of the mechanism of diffusion and phase transformation.

1. Habitat use can influence individual performance in a wide range of animals, either immediately or through carry-over effects in subsequent seasons. Given that many animal species also show consistent individual differences in reproductive success, it seems plausible that individuals may have consistent patterns of habitat use representing individual specializations, with concomitant fitness consequences.

2. Stable-carbon isotope ratios from a range of tissues were used to discern individual consistency in habitat use along a terrestrial–aquatic gradient in a long-distance migrant, the Bewick’s swan (Cygnus columbianus bewickii). These individual specialisations represented <15% of the isotopic breadth of the population for the majority of individuals and were seen to persist throughout autumn migration and overwintering until aquatic habitats were no longer available.

3. Individual foraging specialisations were then used to demonstrate two consecutive carry-over effects associated with macroscale habitat segregation: consequences of breeding season processes for autumn habitat use; and consequences of autumn habitat use for future reproductive success. Adults that were successful breeders in the year of capture used terrestrial habitats significantly more than adults that were not successful, revealing a substantial cost of reproduction and extended parental care. Use of aquatic habitats during autumn was, however, associated with increased body condition prior to spring migration; and increased subsequent breeding success in adults that had been unsuccessful the year before. Yet adults that were successful breeders in the year of capture remained the most likely to be successful the following year, despite their use of terrestrial habitats.

4. Our results uniquely demonstrate not only individual foraging specializations throughout the migration period, but also that processes during breeding and autumn migration, mediated by individual consistency, may play a fundamental role in the population dynamics of long-distance migrants. These findings, therefore, highlight the importance of long-term consistency to our understanding of habitat function, interindividual differences in fitness, population dynamics and the evolution of migratory strategies.

The production of functional molecular architectures through self-assembly is commonplace in biology, but despite advances1, 2, 3, it is still a major challenge to achieve similar complexity in the laboratory. Self-assembled structures that are reproducible and virtually defect free are of interest for applications in three-dimensional cell culture4, 5, templating6, biosensing7 and supramolecular electronics8. Here, we report the use of reversible enzyme-catalysed reactions to drive self-assembly. In this approach, the self-assembly of aromatic short peptide derivatives9, 10 provides a driving force that enables a protease enzyme to produce building blocks in a reversible and spatially confined manner. We demonstrate that this system combines three features: (i) self-correction—fully reversible self-assembly under thermodynamic control; (ii) component-selection—the ability to amplify the most stable molecular self-assembly structures in dynamic combinatorial libraries11, 12, 13; and (iii) spatiotemporal confinement of nucleation and structure growth. Enzyme-assisted self-assembly therefore provides control in bottom-up fabrication of nanomaterials that could ultimately lead to functional nanostructures with enhanced complexities and fewer defects.

Parity in sentencing is the principle that offenders who are parties to a crime should, all things being equal, receive the same penalty. While it is a well-established principle, the reality is that its scope is greatly limited by the largely unfettered nature of the sentencing calculus. Things are rarely equal between offenders due to the large number of variables that current orthodoxy maintains are relevant to sentencing. This makes application of the parity principle unpredictable, resulting in the paradox that parity highlights the unfairness that it is meant to mitigate: inconsistency in sentencing. This article contends that parity will remain an aspiration, as opposed to a concrete principle, until the instinctive synthesis approach to sentencing yields to a more transparent and precise decision-making process. The article focuses on Australian jurisprudence, but the analysis applies to all jurisdictions where sentencing has a considerable discretionary component (including the UK and the USA--apart from the limited circumstances where mandatory sentences apply).

Aim  Resources can shape patterns of habitat utilization. Recently a broad foraging dichotomy between oceanic and coastal sites has been revealed for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Since oceanic and coastal foraging sites differ in prey availability, we might expect a gross difference in home-range size across these habitats. We tested this hypothesis by equipping nine adult male loggerhead sea turtles with GPS tracking devices. Location  National Marine Park of Zakynthos (NMPZ) Greece, central and eastern Mediterranean (Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas). Methods  In 2007, 2008 and 2009, Fastloc GPS-Argos transmitters were attached to nine male loggerheads. In addition, a Sirtrack PTT unit was attached to one male in 2007. Four of the turtles were tracked on successive years. We filtered the GPS data to ensure comparable data volumes. Route consistency between breeding and foraging sites of the four re-tracked turtles was conducted. Foraging site home range areas and within site movement patterns were investigated by the fixed kernel density method. Results  Foraging home range size ranged between circa 10 km2 at neritic habitats (coastal and open-sea on the continental shelf) to circa 1000 km2 at oceanic sites (using 90% kernel estimates), the latter most probably reflecting sparsely distributed oceanic prey. Across different years individuals did not follow exactly the same migration routes, but did show fidelity to their previous foraging sites, whether oceanic or neritic, with accurate homing in the final stages of migration. Main conclusions  The broad distribution and diverse life-history strategies of this population could complicate the identification of priority marine protected areas beyond the core breeding site.

In this work we analyze the key issue of the relationship that should hold between the operators in a family {An} of aggregation operators in order to understand they properly define a consistent whole. Here we extend some of the ideas about stability of a family of aggregation operators into a more general framework, formally defining the notions of i – L and j – R strict stability for families of aggregation operators. The notion of strict stability of order k is introduced as well. Finally, we also present an application of the strict stability conditions to deal with missing data problems in an information aggregation process. For this analysis, we have focused in the weighted mean family and the quasi-arithmetic weighted means families.

Controllable 3D assembly of multicomponent inorganic nanomaterials by precisely positioning two or more types of nanoparticles to modulate their interactions and achieve multifunctionality remains a major challenge. The diverse chemical and structural features of biomolecules can generate the compositionally specific organic/inorganic interactions needed to create such assemblies. Toward this aim, we studied the materials-specific binding of peptides selected based upon affinity for Ag (AgBP1 and AgBP2) and Au (AuBP1 and AuBP2) surfaces, combining experimental binding measurements, advanced molecular simulation, and nanomaterial synthesis. This reveals, for the first time, different modes of binding on the chemically similar Au and Ag surfaces. Molecular simulations showed flatter configurations on Au and a greater variety of 3D adsorbed conformations on Ag, reflecting primarily enthalpically driven binding on Au and entropically driven binding on Ag. This may arise from differences in the interfacial solvent structure. On Au, direct interaction of peptide residues with the metal surface is dominant, while on Ag, solvent-mediated interactions are more important. Experimentally, AgBP1 is found to be selective for Ag over Au, while the other sequences have strong and comparable affinities for both surfaces, despite differences in binding modes. Finally, we show for the first time the impact of these differences on peptide mediated synthesis of nanoparticles, leading to significant variation in particle morphology, size, and aggregation state. Because the degree of contact with the metal surface affects the peptide's ability to cap the nanoparticles and thereby control growth and aggregation, the peptides with the least direct contact (AgBP1 and AgBP2 on Ag) produced relatively polydispersed and aggregated nanoparticles. Overall, we show that thermodynamically different binding modes at metallic interfaces can enable selective binding on very similar inorganic surfaces and can provide control over nanoparticle nucleation and growth. This supports the promise of bionanocombinatoric approaches that rely upon materials recognition.

Data grids have been adopted by many scientific communities that need to share, access, transport, process, and manage geographically distributed large data collections. Data replication is one of the main mechanisms used in data grids whereby identical copies of data are generated and stored at various distributed sites to either improve data access performance or reliability or both. However, when data updates are allowed, it is a great challenge to simultaneously improve performance and reliability while ensuring data consistency of such huge and widely distributed data. In this paper, we address this problem. We propose a new quorum-based data replication protocol with the objectives of minimizing the data update cost, providing high availability and data consistency. We compare the proposed approach with two existing approaches using response time, data consistency, data availability, and communication costs. The results show that the proposed approach performs substantially better than the benchmark approaches.

A recent study in Science indicated that the confidence of a decision maker played an essential role in group decision making problems. In order to make use of the information of each individual's confidence of the current decision problem, a new hybrid weighted aggregation method to solve a group decision making peoblem is proposed in this paper. Specifically, the hybrid weight of each expert is generated by a convex combination of his/her subjective experience-based weight and objective problem-domain-based weight. The experience-based weight is derived from the expert's historical experiences and the problem-domain-based weight is characterized by the confidence degree and consensus degree of each expert's opinions in the current decision making process. Based on the hybrid weighted aggregation method, all the experts' opinions which are expressed in the form of fuzzy preference relations are consequently aggregated to obtain a collective group opinion. Some valuable properities of the proposed method are discussed. A nurse manager hiring problem in a hospital is employed to illustrate that the proposed method provides a rational and valid solution for the group decision making problem when the experts are not willing to change their initial preferences, or the cost of change is high due to time limitation.
