This study investigates if surface modification, in conjunction with thermal transfer, will improve the adhesion of polyurethane films onto a wool fabric surface for sportswear application. Atmospheric pressure plasma and hydrogen peroxide treatments were used to enhance the surface energy of the wool fabric. Polyurethane polymer films were transferred onto the surface of treated fabrics using a hot press method. The effectiveness of different treatments to improve the adhesion of the film onto the wool surface was tested by washing fastness and the stretch recovery of polyurethane bonded fabrics. The results confirmed improvement on adhesion properties of wool bonded fabrics after different treatments.

Recent advances in wearable electronics, technical textiles, and wearable strain sensing devices have resulted in extensive research on stretchable electrically conductive fibers. Addressing these areas require the development of efficient fiber processing methodologies that do not compromise the mechanical properties of the polymer (typically an elastomer) when nanomaterials are added as conductive fillers. It is highly desirable that the addition of conductive fillers provides not only electrical conductivity, but that these fillers also enhance the stiffness, strength, stretchability, and toughness of the polymer. Here, the compatibility of polyurethane (PU) and graphene oxide (GO) is utilized for the study of the properties of elastomeric conductive fibers prepared by wet-spinning. The GO-reinforced PU fibers demonstrate outstanding mechanical properties with a 200-fold and a threefold enhancement in Young's modulus and toughness, respectively. Postspinning thermal annealing of the fibers results in electrically conductive fibers with a low percolation threshold (≈0.37 wt% GO). An investigation into optimized fiber's electromechanical behavior reveals linear strain sensing abilities up to 70%. Results presented here provide practical insights on how to simultaneously maintain or improve electrical, mechanical, and electromechanical properties in conductive elastomer fibers.

PurSil®AL20 (PUS), a copolymer of 4,4'-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate (HMDI), 1,4-butane diol (BD), poly-tetramethylene oxide (PTMO) and poly-dimethyl siloxane (PDMS) was investigated for stability as a vehicle for Docetaxel (DTX) delivery through oesophageal drug eluting stent (DES). On exposure to stability test conditions, it was found that DTX release rate declined at 4 and 40 °C. In order to divulge reasons underlying this, changes in DTX solid state as well as PUS microstructure were followed. It was found that re-crystallization of DTX in PDMS rich regions was reducing the drug release at both 4 °C and 40 °C samples. So far microstructural features have not been correlated with stability and drug release, and in this study we found that at 40 °C increase in microstructural domain sizes and the inter-domain distances (from ∼85 Å to 129 Å) were responsible for hindering the DTX release in addition to DTX re-crystallization.

'Torayca' T800H/3900-2 is the first material qualified on Boeing Material Specification (BMS 8-276) which utilizes the thermoplastic-particulate interlayer toughening technology. Two manufacturing processes, the autoclave process and the fast heating rated Quickstep™ process, were employed to cure this material. The Quickstep process is a unique composite production technology which utilizes the fast heat transfer rate of fluid to heat and cure polymer composite components. The manufacturing influence on the mode I delamination fracture toughness of laminates was investigated by performing double cantilever beam tests. The composite specimens fabricated by two processes exhibited dissimilar delamination resistance curves (R-curves) under mode I loading. The initial value of fracture toughness GIC-INIT was 564 J/m2 for the autoclave specimens and 527 J/m2 for the Quickstep specimens. However, the average propagation fracture toughness GIC-PROP was 783 J/m2 for the Quickstep specimens, which was 2.6 times of that for the autoclave specimens. The mechanism of fracture occurred during delamination was studied under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Three types of fracture were observed: the interlayer fracture, the interface fracture, and the intralaminar fracture. These three types of fracture played different roles in affecting the delamination resistance curves during the crack growth. More fiber bridging was found in the process of delamination for the Quickstep specimens. Better fiber/matrix adhesion was found in the Quickstep specimens by conducting indentation-debond tests.

Short peripheral intravenous cannulae (pIVC) are prone to specific problems such as thrombophlebitis, infiltration and bacterial colonisation. This paper presents data from a study of 80 polyurethane pIVC in 59 children within a general paediatric population. There was no significant colonisation of any cannula by bacterial or fungal organisms. This study provides evidence that it is safe not to routinely replace pIVC in this population. It supports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for intravenous cannula (IVC) management in children.

An accurate kinetics model is essential for understanding the curing mechanism and predicting the end properties of polymer materials. Graphite/epoxy AS4/ 8552 prepreg is a recent high-performance thermosetting composite modified with thermoplastic, which is being used in the manufacture of aircraft and military structures. The isothermal cures of this system along with another thermoplastic toughened high-performance prepreg, the T800H/3900-2 system, were investigated by real-time Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The cure rate was quantitatively analyzed based on the concentration profiles of both the epoxy and primary amine groups. Three autocatalytic models were used to determine kinetics parameters for both composite systems. The model which utilizes an empirical term, the final relative conversion (at different isothermal curing temperatures), describes the experimental data of both systems more satisfactorily than the model which applies a diffusion factor. The modeling results suggest that the curing of epoxy within both prepregs can be assumed to be a second order process.

Thermoplastic toughened epoxy resins are widely used as matrices in modern prepreg systems.Different curing conditions play a great role in affecting the cure kinetics and phase behaviour of thermoplastic modified epoxies which further result in different mechanical properties of polymer matrix composites.Since the morphology of the cured thermoplastic/epoxy blends is directly related to the mechanical properties,it is essential to control processing conditions for obtaining desirable morphology.A polyethersulphone (PES) modified multifunctional epoxies, triglycidylaminophenol (TGAP) and tetraglycidyldiaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM),was used for investigation. The cure kinetics and cured morphology of polymer blends heated at different heating rates and cured at different temperature were studied. It is shown that higher cure temperature and higher heating rate display similar effects in the epoxy conversion and the domain size of phase separated structure.

The wetting behavior of water droplets was studied on tunable nanostructured polystyrene (PS) surfaces fabricated by temperature-induced capillary template wetting. The surface morphology of PS varied with the annealing temperature. Contact angle (CA) measurements showed that the wettability of polystyrene surfaces could be tuned from hydrophobic (CA = 104°) to superhydrophobic (CA = 161°) by rendering different morphologies, which could be explained by two distinct wetting modes, i.e., the Wenzel and Cassie–Baxter wetting state. Meanwhile, the critical annealing temperature inducing wetting transition between the Wenzel state and Cassie–Baxter state was obtained. This approach could be easily extended to produce superhydrophobic surfaces on other thermoplastic polymers.

This paper described the production of a novel biosynthetic material using the manufacturing technique of electro spinning for the construction of scaffold for organ replacement. This electrostatic technique uses an electric field to control the deposition of polymer fibres onto a specific substrate to fabricate fibrous polymer constructs composed of fibre diameters ranging from several microns down to 100 nm or less. Two areas of research, in particular, heart valve leaflets and blood vessel will be discussed. Here, a sandwich structure nanofibre mesh was used to construct materials for leaflets of heart valve and blood vessel. In the case of heart valve leaflet, the randomly oriented polyurethane nanofibres were prepared as the first layer, followed by gelatin-chitosan complex layer. Complex nanofibres were initially used to spin on the PU layer with cross orientation to mimic the fibrosa layer. A gelatin and chitosan complex was then spun onto the other side of PU nanofibre mesh to mimic the ventricularis layer. This particular sandwich structure using the PU layer was designed to simulate the mechanical properties of natural tissue. In addition, this design was aimed to provide good biocompatibility and improved cellular environment to assist in adhesion and proliferation. Smooth muscle cells adhered and flattened out onto the surface of the gelatin-chitosan complex as early as 1 day post seeding. There is great potential for this biosynthetic biocompatible nanofibrous material to be developed for various clinical applications.

Corrosion protection by lanthanum hydroxy cinnamate (La(4OH-cin)3) in a polyurethane based varnish coating for mild steelhas been investigated. Filiform scribe tests, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) and potentiodynamic polarisation (PP)techniques have been powerful tools to better understand the corrosion process at defects and under the coating. Filiform scribetests showed that La(4OH-cin)3, as a pigment in a coating, inhibited the initiation and propagation of both delamination and filiformcorrosion (FFC) on coated steel. The PP experiments provided an insight into the fundamental mechanism of FFC. The resultssuggest that La(4OH-cin)3 behaves as a mixed inhibitor and stifles the initiation and propagation of FFC. In this paper, the theory ofdelamination leading to FFC and the likely mechanism of inhibition by the La(4OH-cin)3 will be discussed.
