This study examined the financial costs of multiple sclerosis (MS) and the impact of financial strain on the subjective quality of life of people with MS and their families. Due to the lack of research in this area, a qualitative research design was employed. Interviews were conducted with 16 health professionals, 26 people with MS, and 11 family members of people who had MS. Adjusting to actual or threatened loss of income caused financial stress. These financial struggles led to a lower quality of life among respondents. Problem solving, coping, and positive reappraisal helped people to adjust to financial changes. Professionals focused on increased funding for services, whereas people with MS focused on improved income support. These findings highlight the need for professionals to consider the financial strain associated with this disease and the impact of this strain on the quality of life of individuals with MS and their families.

Objective: For successful prosecution of child sexual abuse, children are often required to provide reports about individual, alleged incidents. Although verbally or mentally rehearsing memory of an incident can strengthen memories, children’s report of individual incidents can also be contaminated when they experience other events related to the individual incidents (e.g., informal interviews, dreams of the incident) and/or when they have similar, repeated experiences of an incident, as in cases of multiple abuse.

Method: Research is reviewed on the positive and negative effects of these related experiences on the length, accuracy, and structure of children’s reports of a particular incident.

Results: Children’s memories of a particular incident can be strengthened when exposed to information that does not contradict what they have experienced, thus promoting accurate recall and resistance to false, suggestive influences. When the encountered information differs from children’s experiences of the target incident, however, children can become confused between their experiences—they may remember the content but not the source of their experiences.

Conclusions: We discuss the implications of this research for interviewing children in sexual abuse investigations and provide a set of research-based recommendations for investigative interviewers.

This paper compares the results of a longitudinal study of ten years, conducted at five yearly intervals, from 1995 to 2005. The aim of the study was to examine the commitment to business ethics of the top 500 Australian companies. Primary data was obtained via a self-administered mail questionnaire distributed to a census of the top 500 Australian companies. This paper examines those responses that indicated that their company possessed a code of ethics. The paper finds that business ethics has continued to evolve and that, in most cases, such evolution has been positive. It would seem that codes of ethics have moved beyond a regulatory requirement and are now considered an integral component of corporate culture and commercial practice in many of Australia's top companies.

Managerialism has been adopted with alacrity by Australian government agencies across multiple sectors. A few studies of managerialism in concept and practice have been undertaken in some public sectors. Here we challenge the appropriateness and effectiveness of new managerialism generally, and for the arts in particular, through an analysis of conflict between an artistic director, the general manager(s), and the board of directors in a community arts organization. We outline the implications of the implementation of managerialism for the organization generally and the implications specifically for the workplace rights of some of the artistic and administrative staff. We call for further research into the appropriateness of management theory and practice for the arts, and we seek new ways of managing our cultural capital.

Computers of a non-dedicated cluster are often idle (users attend meetings, have lunch or coffee breaks) or lightly loaded (users carry out simple computations to support problem solving activities). These underutilised computers can be employed to execute parallel applications. Thus, these computers can be shared by parallel and sequential applications, which could lead to the improvement of their execution performance. However, there is a lack of experimental study showing the applications’ performance and the system utilization of executing parallel and sequential applications concurrently and concurrent execution of multiple parallel applications on a non-dedicated cluster. Here we present the result of an experimental study into load balancing based scheduling of mixtures of NAS Parallel Benchmarks and BYTE sequential applications on a very low cost non-dedicated cluster. This study showed that the proposed sharing provided performance boost as compared to the execution of the parallel load in isolation on a reduced number of computers and better cluster utilization. The results of this research were used not only to validate other researchers’ result generated by simulation but also to support our research mission of widening the use of non-dedicated clusters. Our promising results obtained could promote further research studies to convince universities, business and industry, which require a large amount of computing resources, to run parallel applications on their already owned non-dedicated clusters.

Objectives: Previous research has examined costs associated with progressive neurological illnesses, but has not examined predictors of economic pressure, or quality of life (QOL). The aim of the current study was to examine the predictors of both economic pressure and QOL among people with a range of progressive neurological illness.

Method: Participants were 257 people with motor neurone disease, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s.

Results: High levels of cut backs in spending predicted economic pressure for all groups. Economic pressure predicted QOL at 12-month follow-up for all groups except Parkinson’s. For Parkinson’s, predictors of QOL were long duration of illness, illness-related expenses and cut backs in spending. Cut backs in spending, and not income or expenses, were the most important predictor of economic pressure. QOL was predicted by high levels of economic pressure for most of the illness groups.

Discussion: The implications of these findings are discussed. They suggest that cut backs in spending, as opposed to income and expenses, are important factors to focus on assisting people to adjust to the changes to their financial situation that frequently occurs after developing one of these progressive neurological illnesses.

Geared Equity Investment (GEI) contracts are an over-the-counter financial derivative product offered by Macquarie Bank, Ltd. to individual investors in Australia and New Zealand as a managed-risk investment in local shares carrying significant tax shield benefits. Upon issuance, a geared equity contract has three stakeholders: (1) the investor; (2) the issuer; and (3) the national tax authority. We assess the value of these contracts to each stakeholder and their support for tax arbitrage. We find that the national tax authority provides a significant subsidy to GEI contracts via tax shield benefits. These benefits support investor tax arbitrage in certain cases and issuer tax arbitrage in all cases examined.

Some exceptional social integrative alliances can go unrecognised amid the swell of high profile initiatives. This may be dependent upon the propensity of the partnering organisations to seize publicity opportunities or public sensitivity towards an issue. This paper focuses on one such exemplar of best practice of social investment in Australia.

A joint initiative between a major manufacturing organisation (Unilever Australasia) and a social nonprofit organisation (Learning Links) has led to the creation of the Reading for Life program. This initiative aims to advance the literacy levels of children in the formative years of education. The examination of this case provides a broader picture of the Australian alliance marketplace and the effects this one successful relationship has had on encouraging further  partners, additional programs and promoting best practice.

The research aimed to uncover the objectives of each partner along with the management processes used, outcomes (both perceived and actual) and future direction. In-depth interviews were conducted across different levels of the organisational structure of each partner in multiple locations within Australia.

Preliminary findings provided an insight into alliance formation and the overwhelming importance of social investment as a core motive. Twelve core factors were identified as contributing to the successful implementation of this relationship. In particular, regular reporting of successful outcomes was an important implementation factor, not only in driving the relationship to new levels, but also in the recruitment of further investment partners.

This case demonstrates that multiple positive outcomes can be gained from cross-sector collaboration. Unilever Australasia has successfully developed a positive corporate culture amongst its employees and will leave a legacy of social investment. Learning Links, with the help of a private sector partnership, has increased its operational capacity and is now established as a trans-national nonprofit organisation. Together they have made a noteworthy contribution to
the improvement of literacy in hundreds of children’s lives and fundamentally paved the way for demonstrating that social investment can be considered a good business outcome.

This case is being used to inform theory on cross-sector collaboration and build on the findings of Austin (2000) in relation to the alliance marketplace and factors inherent in integrative alliances.

Currently, coordinated scheduling of multiple parallel applications across computers has been considered as the critical factor to achieve high execution performance. We claim in this report that the performance and costs of the execution of parallel applications could be improved if not only dedicated clusters but also non-dedicated clusters were used and several parallel applications were executed concurreontly. To support this claim we carried out experimental study into the performance of multiple NAS parallel programs executing concurrently on a non-dedicated cluster.

Children have largely been absent from or on the periphery of mediation processes in postseparation parenting disputes. An accompanying paper canvasses a number of reasons why this may be the case. The present paper goes on to describe a current prospective study of outcomes for families utilising these two different forms.of mediation: child focused and child inclusive. The study follows the pathways of individual adjustment and parental alliance for families across the two forms of intervention, addressing whether and in what cases a child-inclusive mediation process enhances postseparation family outcomes.

Previous studies have suggested that lay people and professionals both tend to deny or minimise female-perpetrated sexual abuse of children. However, such abuse has been shown to have negative impacts on the victims. This study investigated whether professionals who might work with victims or perpetrators of childhood sexual abuse show a bias in processing scenarios and making decisions when confronted such abuse. A sample of 231 psychiatrists, psychologists, probationary psychologists and child protection workers responded to variations in vignettes in which women and men offended against children, and completed a questionnaire assessing attitudes to women's sexually abusive/offending behaviour toward children. All professional groups regarded cases involving female perpetrators of child sexual abuse as serious and deserving of professional attention. However, while there were some differences between groups, female perpetrators were more likely than male perpetrators to be considered leniently, suggesting that minimisation of female-perpetrated sexual abuse of children may persist in the professional arena. As a result, both female perpetrators of sexual abuse and their victims may go untreated, and in the case of perpetrators, their behaviour may go unsanctioned. Training for professionals to enhance their understanding of the seriousness of sexual abuse perpetrated by women is indicated.

This study examined the development of declarative and procedural memory longitudinally in primary school-aged children. At present, although there is a general consensus that age-related improvements during this period can be found for declarative memory, there are conflicting data on the developmental trajectory of the procedural memory system. At Time 1 children aged around 5 years were presented with measures of declarative and procedural memory. The tasks were then administered 12 months later. Performance on the declarative memory task was found to improve at a faster rate in comparison to the procedural memory task. The findings of the study support the view that multiple memory systems reach functional maturity at different points in development.

Background: The energy density (ED) of an entrée affects children's energy intake at a meal consumed ad libitum. However, the effects in children of changing the ED of meals over multiple days are unknown.

Objective:
We aimed to test the effect of reducing the ED of multiple meals on the ad libitum energy intake of preschool-age children over 2 d.

Design: In this crossover study, 3- to 5-y-old children (n = 10 boys, 16 girls) were served manipulated breakfasts, lunches, and afternoon snacks 2 d/wk for 2 wk. Foods and beverages served at these meals during 1 wk were lower in ED than were those served during the other week. ED reductions were achieved by decreasing fat and sugar and by increasing fruit and vegetables. Dinner and an evening snack were sent home with children, but these meals did not vary in ED. The same 2-d menu was served in both conditions.

Results:
Children consumed a consistent weight of foods and beverages over 2 d in both conditions, and therefore their energy consumption declined by 389 ± 72 kcal (14%) in the lower-ED condition, a significant decrease (P < 0.0001). Differences in energy intake were significant at breakfast on day 1, and they accumulated at manipulated meals over 2 d (P < 0.01). Intake of the nonmanipulated meals was similar between conditions.

Conclusions:
Children's energy intake is influenced by the ED of foods and beverages served over multiple days. These results strengthen the evidence that reducing the ED of the diet is an effective strategy for moderating children's energy intake.

Ionic liquid surface treatments are proposed as a method of controlling corrosion processes on magnesium alloys. An important magnesium alloy, ZE41 (nominally 4% Zn and 1% rare earth), was treated with the ionic liquid trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium diphenylphosphate (P66614DPP). Impedance spectra were acquired at intervals during the treatment, indicating the development of a film and allowing a measure of the film formation process to be obtained over time. Mechanically polished and electro-polished surfaces were prepared; these surfaces, treated and untreated, were subsequently exposed to 0.1 M NaCl aqueous solutions. The corrosion behavior of the prepared surfaces were assessed using impedance spectroscopy and optical microscopy. The results indicated a significant role for the method of surface preparation used and, in both cases, the ionic liquid treatment produced a more corrosion-resistant surface.

Disability discrimination complaints are primarily resolved in the privacy of a conciliation conference. Few complaints reach the courts, so there is very little available information about the outcomes negotiated by the parties or how this type of discrimination is being addressed. Drawing on settlement agreements and decided cases from Queensland, this article examines how disability discrimination across a range of areas is remedied prior to hearing and by the tribunal. The data suggests that complaints are predominantly remedied in an individualised way, mainly with compensation. Although the parties negotiate wider, systemic outcomes on occasion — such as building modifications or better access to premises — courts rarely award remedies of this nature. The law in the United Kingdom takes quite a different approach. This article considers three mechanisms used in the United Kingdom which could be adopted in Australia to strengthen the law’s effectiveness for people with a disability: investing a public agency with enforcement powers; requiring organisations to make reasonable adjustments for people with a disability; and placing a positive duty on public authorities to promote equality for people with a disability.
