South Korea confronts the rise of China

The rise of China is one of the most discussed topics in the field of international relations. While few doubt that China is indeed “rising”, precisely how this process is unfolding and with what implications, is unclear. Should China’s growing prominence in regional and global affairs be treated as simply the latest in a natural process of states rising in influence, or is it somehow new, different or potentially destabilising? Given that the implications of China’s rise have been acutely felt in South Korea, this paper focuses seeks to typologise the responses of the South to the rise of China.

From learning to earning : the school-to-work transition of Australian graduates

Aims to investigate the transition of graduates from school-to-work through the triagulation of three data sets. A 3-stage model based on what graduates "want", "do" and "get" in their first job was designed. Findings revealed causality between the three stages.

Context-based e-health system access control mechanism

E-Health systems logically demand a sufficiently fine-grained authorization policy for access control. The access to medical information should not be just role-based but should also include the contextual condition of the role to access data. In this paper, we present a mechanism to extend the standard role-based access control to incorporate contextual information for making access control decisions in e-health application. We present an architecture consisting of authorisation and context infrastructure that work cooperatively to grant access rights based on context-aware authorization policies and context information.

Experiences gained from building a services-based distributed operating system

The goal of this paper is to present the experiences gained over 15 years of research into the design and development of a services-based distributed operating system. The lessons learnt over this period, we hope, will be of value to researchers involved in the design and development of operating systems that wish to harness the collective resources of ever-expanding distributed systems.

Toward a framework for cloud security

While the emergence of cloud computing has made it possible to rent information technology infrastructures on demand, it has also created new security challenges. The primary security concern is trusting data (or resources in general) on another organization’s system. This document seeks to examine the current state of security in cloud computing and presents a set of challenges to address the security needs of clouds. The end result is a framework to help the design and implementation of effective cloud security infrastructures.

Efficient web browsing with perfect anonymity using page prefetching

Anonymous web browsing is a hot topic with many potential applications for privacy reasons. The current dominant strategy to achieve anonymity is packet padding with dummy packets as cover traffic. However, this method introduces extra bandwidth cost and extra delay. Therefore, it is not practical for anonymous web browsing applications. In order to solve this problem, we propose to use the predicted web pages that users are going to access as the cover traffic rather than dummy packets. Moreover, we defined anonymity level as a metric to measure anonymity degrees, and established a mathematical model for anonymity systems, and transformed the anonymous communication problem into an optimization problem. As a result, users can find tradeoffs among anonymity level and cost. With the proposed model, we can describe and compare our proposal and the previous schemas in a theoretical style. The preliminary experiments on the real data set showed the huge potential of the proposed strategy in terms of resource saving.

Opening brings together single frame and time lapse techniques, real-time footage, environmental recordings and choreography in a 37-minute creative manifestation.

This is a unique and special project which brings to life the history, land, design and community of Fed Square. It will transport you through the curving path that spirals out to Lake Tyrrell in Northern Victoria and whirls back to Fed Square.

1H-NMR and mass spectrometric characterization of the metabolic response of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to long-term handling stress

Stressors of various kinds constantly affect fish both in the wild and in culture, examples being acute water temperature and quality changes, predation, handling, and confinement. Known physiological responses of fish to stress such as increases in plasma cortisol and glucose levels, are considered to be adaptive, allowing the animal to cope in the short term. Prolonged exposure to stressors however, has the potential to affect growth, immune function, and survival. Nonetheless, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the long-term stress response. We have investigated the metabolic response of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to long-term handling stress by analyzing fish plasma via ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and ultra high performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS), and comparing results with controls. Analysis of NMR data indicated a difference in the metabolic profiles of control and stressed fish after 1 week of stress with a maximum difference observed after 2 weeks. These differences were associated with stress-induced increases in phosphatidyl choline, lactate, carbohydrates, alanine, valine and trimethylamine-N-oxide, and decreases in low density lipoprotein, very low density lipoprotein, and lipid. UPLC-MS data showed differences at week 2, associated with another set of compounds, tentatively identified on the basis of their mass/charge. Overall the results provided a multi-faceted view of the response of fish to long-term handling stress, indicating that the metabolic disparity between the control and stress groups increased to week 2, but declined by weeks 3 and 4, and revealed several new molecular indicators of long-term stress.

Assessing data quality issues in the Emergency Department through data and process mapping

Data and information quality is a well-established research topic and gradually appears on the decision-makers' top concern lists. Many studies have been conducted on how to investigate the generic data/information quality issues and factors by providing a high-level abstract framework or model. Based on these previous studies, this study tries to discuss the actual data quality issues with the operation-level and middle-level managers emerged during the emergency department data collection and reporting processes. By conduct data quality issues and business processes mapping, possible data quality issues are summarised under the well-known TOP model and the recommendations of data quality improvement are suggested.)

A project conceived by Paul Carter, Professor of Design / Urbanism, Architecture & Design, that explores the theme of 'Alterations' in clothes, identities and spaces. The project is inspired by Dandenong's rapidly mutating public and commercial spaces and the multicultural communities that animate them. The project features a multi-monitor video work Loops, textile-based installation, documentary photography, and poster manifestos. Artists featured include Dirk de Bruyn, Ed Carter, Paul Carter and Soo Yeun You.
