We investigate the resource-allocation problem in multicell networks targeting the max-min throughput of all cells. A joint optimization over power control, channel allocation, and user association is considered, and the problem is then formulated as a nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear problem (MINLP). To solve this problem, we proposed an alternating-optimization-based algorithm, which applies branch-and-bound and simulated annealing in solving subproblems at each optimization step. We also demonstrate the convergence and efficiency of the proposed algorithms by thorough numerical experiments. The experimental results show that joint optimization over all resources outperforms the restricted optimization over individual resources significantly.

Neural networks (NNs) are an effective tool to model nonlinear systems. However, their forecasting performance significantly drops in the presence of process uncertainties and disturbances. NN-based prediction intervals (PIs) offer an alternative solution to appropriately quantify uncertainties and disturbances associated with point forecasts. In this paper, an NN ensemble procedure is proposed to construct quality PIs. A recently developed lower-upper bound estimation method is applied to develop NN-based PIs. Then, constructed PIs from the NN ensemble members are combined using a weighted averaging mechanism. Simulated annealing and a genetic algorithm are used to optimally adjust the weights for the aggregation mechanism. The proposed method is examined for three different case studies. Simulation results reveal that the proposed method improves the average PI quality of individual NNs by 22%, 18%, and 78% for the first, second, and third case studies, respectively. The simulation study also demonstrates that a 3%-4% improvement in the quality of PIs can be achieved using the proposed method compared to the simple averaging aggregation method.

Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is an important concern in Photovoltaic (PV) systems. As PV systems have a high cost of energy it is essential that they are operated to extract the maximum possible power at all times. However, under non-uniform environmental conditions, which frequently arise in the outdoor environment, many MPPT techniques will fail to track the global peak power. This review paper discusses conventional MPPT techniques designed to operate under uniform environmental conditions and highlights why these techniques fail under non-uniform conditions. Following this, techniques designed specifically to operate under non-uniform environmental conditions are analysed and compared. Simulation results which compare the performance of the common Perturb and Observe (P&O) method, the Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) and the Simulated Annealing (SA) MPPT approaches under non-uniform environmental conditions are also presented. The research presented in this review indicates that there is no single technique which can achieve reliable global MPPT with low cost and complexity and be easily adapted to different PV systems.

Yarn tension is a key factor that affects the efficiency of a ring spinning system. In this paper, a specially constructed rig, which can rotate a yarn at a high speed without inserting any real twist into the yarn, was used to simulate a ring spinning process. Yarn tension was measured at the guide-eye during the simulated spinning of different yarns at various balloon heights and with varying yarn length in the balloon. The effect of balloon shape, yarn hairiness and thickness, and yarn rotating speed, on the measured yarn tension, was examined. The results indicate that the collapse of balloon shape from single loop to double loop, or from double loop to triple etc, lead to sudden reduction in yarn tension. Under otherwise identical conditions, a longer length of yarn in the balloon gives a lower yarn tension at the guide-eye. In addition, thicker yarns and/or more hairy yarns generate a higher tension in the yarn, due to the increased air drag acting on the thicker or more hairy yarns.

High purity Al single crystals of the (011)[011] orientation have been deformed in plane strain compression in a channel die. Deformation was carried out at a strain rate of 0.01 s−1 to true strains of 0.5 and 1.0, and at temperatures of 25, 200 and 300 °C. The as-deformed microstructure has been characterized using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). No recrystallization was detected after deformation, and the deformation texture analysis showed that the stability of the orientation decreased with increasing temperature, contrary to reports for other orientations.

Annealing was carried out for various times at 300 °C. Nucleation of recrystallization exhibited periodicity, with distinct bands of recrystallized grains forming parallel to the transverse direction. This recrystallized microstructure has been examined using EBSD. A model is proposed to account for the origin of the periodicity of nucleation and the retention of rods or cylinders of unrecrystallized material after significant annealing times.

Continuous and discontinuous cooling tests were performed using a quench deformation dilatometer to develop a comprehensive understanding of the structural and kinetic aspects of the bainite transformation in low carbon TRIP (transformation induced plasticity) steels as a function of thermomechanical processing and composition. Deformation in the unrecrystallised austenite region refined the ferrite grain size and increased the ferrite and bainite transformation temperatures for cooling rates from 10 to 90 K s-1. The influence of niobium on the transformation kinetics was also investigated. Niobium increases the ferrite start transformation temperature, refines the ferrite microstructure, and stimulates the formation of acicular ferrite. The effect of the bainite isothermal transformation temperature on the final microstructure of steels with and without a small addition of niobium was studied. Niobium promotes the formation of stable retained austenite, which influences the mechanical properties of TRIP steels. The optimum mechanical properties were obtained after isothermal holding at 400°C in the niobium steel containing the maximum volume fraction of retained austenite with acicular ferrite as the predominant second phase.

While methadone is currently the primary pharmacotherapy used in the treatment of heroin dependence in Australia, levo-alpha-acetyl-methodol (LAAM) and buprenorphine are new pharmacotherapies that are being examined as alternatives to methadone maintenance treatment. The aim of this research is to consider the effects of the methadone, buprenorphine and LAAM, as used in maintenance pharmacotherapy for heroin dependence, upon simulated driving. Clients stabilised in methadone, LAAM and buprenorphine treatment programs for 3 months, and a control group of non-drug-using participants, took part in this study which involved operating a driving simulator over a 75 min period.

Nanowires represent a new class of ZnO morphologies with many exiting new properties and applications. The research in the synthesis and characterization of ZnO nanowires has received enormous attention in recent years. However, most synthesis methods using vapor deposition process can only produce small amount of sample, mass production has not been achieved yet. Large-quantity production of ZnO nanowires needs to be realized for large-scale property and application studies. One of the promising approaches to the large scale synthesis is a ball-milling and annealing method. This paper first introduces several common synthesis methods of ZnO nanowires and then summarizes the one dimensional nanomaterials produced by the ball milling and annealing method. Finally, some preliminary results of ZnO nanowire synthesis are presented.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes with cylindrical and bamboo-type structures are produced in a graphite sample after mechanical milling at ambient temperature and subsequent thermal annealing up to 1400 °C. The ball milling produces a precursor structure and the thermal annealing activates the nanotube growth. Different nanotubular structures indicate different formation mechanisms: multi-wall cylindrical carbon nanotubes are probably formed upon micropores and the bamboo tubes are produced because of the metal catalysts. A two-dimensional growth governed by surface diffusion is believed to be one important factor for the nanotube growth. A potential industrial production method is demonstrated with advantages of large production quantity and low cost.
