This work evaluates the effect of co-existence of a large volume fraction of δ-ferrite on the hot deformation and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of austenite using comparative hot torsion tests on AISI 304 austenitic and 2205 duplex stainless steels. The comparison was performed under similar deformation conditions (i.e. temperature and strain rate) and also under similar Zener-Hollomon, Z, values. The torsion data were combined with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis to study the microstructure development. The results imply a considerable difference between DRX mechanisms, austenite grain sizes and also DRX kinetics of two steels. Whereas austenitic stainless steel shows the start of DRX at very low strains and then development of that microstructure based on the necklace structure, the DRX phenomena in the austenite phase of duplex structure does not proceed to a very high fraction. Also, the DRX kinetics in the austenitic steel are much higher than the austenite phase of the duplex steel. The results suggest that at a similar deformation condition the DRX grain size of austenitic steel is almost three times larger than the DRX grains of austenite phase in duplex steel. Similarly, the ratio of DRX grain size in the austenitic to the duplex structure at the same Z values is about 1.5.

Low temperature plasma carburising (LTPC) has been increasingly accepted as a hardening process for austenitic stainless steels because it produces a good combination of tribological and corrosion properties. The hardening mechanism is based on the supersaturation of the austenitic structure with carbon, which greatly hardens the material, significantly expands the fcc unit cell, produces high levels of compressive residual stresses and, ultimately, leads to the occurrence of deformation bands and rotation of the crystal lattice. The microstructural changes introduced during plasma carburising have a significant impact on the mechanical, tribological and corrosion performance and, for this reason, the microstructure of expanded austenite or S-phase has been extensively studied. However, modern surface characterisation techniques could provide new insights into the formation mechanism of S-phase layers. In this work, backscattered electron diffraction and atomic force microscopy were used to characterise the surface layers of expanded austenite produced by LTPC in an active screen furnace. Based on the experimental results, the plastic deformation, its dependence on crystallographic orientation, the evolution of grain boundaries, and their effects on mechanical, tribological and corrosion properties are discussed. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Shear bands formed during both cold and hot plastic deformation have been linked with several proposed mechanisms for the formation of ultrafine grains. The aim of the present work was to undertake a detailed investigation of the microstructural and crystallographic characteristics of the shear bands formed during hot deformation of a 22Cr-19Ni-3Mo (mass%) austenitic stainless steel and a Fe-30 mass%Ni based austenitic model alloy. These alloys were subjected to deformation in torsion and plane strain compression (PSC), respectively, at temperatures of 900°C and 950°C and strain rates of 0.7s-1 and 10s-1, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy were employed in the investigation. It has been observed that shear bands already started to form at moderate strains in a matrix of pre-existing microbands and were composed of fine, slightly elongated subgrains (fragments). These bands propagated along a similar macroscopic path and the subgrains, present within their substructure, were rotated relative to the surrounding matrix about axes approximately parallel to the sample radial and transverse directions for deformation in torsion and PSC, respectively. The subgrain boundaries were largely observed to be non-crystallographic, suggesting that the subgrains generally formed via multiple slip processes. Shear bands appeared to form through a co-operative nucleation of originally isolated subgrains that gradually interconnected with the others to form long, thin bands that subsequently thickened via the formation of new subgrains. The observed small dimensions of the subgrains present within shear bands and their large misorientations clearly indicate that these subgrains can serve as potent nucleation sites for the formation of ultrafine grain structures during both subsequent recrystallisation, as observed during the present PSC experiments, and phase transformation.

In steels with TRIP-effect, a phase transformation from the retained-austenite to martensite occurs during forming, and it significantly affects hardening behaviours. Such an effect is sensitive to the amount of strain as well as the temperature variation. For materials with a strong TRIP-effect, new forming techniques are needed to develop that can lead to lighter and stronger components in automotive industry. This paper presents a coupled thermo-mechanical finite element modelling and simulation of a warm deep drawing of austenitic stainless steel (including a TRIP-effect) using LS-DYNA and temperature effect on forming process of such materials is investigated.

Austenitic steels with a carbon content of 0.0037 to 0.79 wt% C are torsion tested and modeled using a physically based constitutive model and an Integrated Phenomenological and Artificial neural Network (IPANN) model. The prediction of both the constitutive and IPANN models on steel 0.017 wt% C is then evaluated using a finite element (FEM) code ABAQUS with different reduction in the thickness after rolling through one roll stand. It is found that during the rolling process, the prediction accuracy of the reaction force from FEM simulation for both constitutive and IPANN models depends on the strain achieved (average reduction in thickness). By integrating FEM into IPANN model and introducing the product of strain and stress as an input of the ANN model, the accuracy of this integrated FEM and IPANN model is higher than either the constitutive or IPANN model.

By dilatometry, it is shown that vanadium microalloying additions to eutectoid carbon steels, which also contain an increased level of nitrogen, cause a marked decrease in hardenability when transforming from fine grained austenite.

The microstructures and textures of coarse grained cold rolled, partially recrystallized and fully recrystallized low carbon and interstitial free steel were examined by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The recrystallization textures of the two grades are markedly different, with the low carbon steel having a predominantly Goss {11O}<OOl> texture and the interstitial free steel having a <1ll>/1ND texture with a strong {III }<112> component. One possible explanation for the texture difference is that less severe localization of flow during deformation of interstitial free steels causes less Goss nuclei to be generated. While some support for this view is provided by the results presented in this paper, the results suggest that another mechanism may be at least partially responsible. Examination of micro
shear bands on the surface of pre-polished samples showed that a higher proportion of micro shear bands remained active at high rolling reductions in the low carbon steel, compared with the interstitial free grade. Regions of Goss orientation within bands that have ceased to operate rotate to
near-{ III }<112> orientations with further deformation. Consequently, the recrystallization texture of coarse grained interstitial free steels can be rationalized by a reduction in the availability of Goss nuclei and an increase in the availability of {Ill }<112> nuclei due to a "Goss to {Ill }<112>" rotation within micro shear bands that have ceased to operate.

Two experiments were conducted to clarify the roles of grain size, solute carbon and strain in determining the recrystallization textures of cold-rolled and annealed steels. In the first experiment, samples of coarse-grained low-carbon (LC) and interstitial-free (IF) steels were cold-rolled to a 75% reduction in thickness. One sample from each steel was polished and cold-rolled an additional 5%, while the remaining samples were annealed for various times at 650°C. In the second experiment, three samples from a commercial LC steel sheet were rolled 70% at 300°C. Two of the samples were given a further rolling reduction of 5% of the original thickness, with one of the samples being given this additional reduction at 300°C and the other at room temperature. Goss recrystallization textures are strengthened by coarse initial grain sizes, the presence of solute carbon and rolling at a temperature where dynamic strain ageing occurs, but are weakened by additional rolling beyond a reduction of 70%, especially when this extra rolling is conducted at a temperature where dynamic strain ageing does not occur. Characterization of key features of the deformed and recrystallized steels using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) supports a rationale for these effects based on the repeated activation and deactivation of shear bands and the influence of solute carbon and dynamic strain ageing on the operating life of the bands and the accumulation of strain within them.

In the present study, the effect of nominal equivalent strain (between 0 and 1.2), deformation temperature (790– 750°C) and carbon content (0.06 – 0.35%C) was investigated on ferrite grain refinement through dynamic strain induced transformation (DSIT) in plain carbon steels in single pass rolling. The microstructural evolution of the transformation of austenite to ferrite has been evaluated through the thickness of the strip. The results showed a number of important microstructural features as a function of strain, which could be classified into three regions; no DSIT region, DSIT region, and ultrafine ferrite (UFF) grain region. Hence, two critical strains; dynamic strain induced transformation (εC, DSIT) and ultrafine ferrite formation (εC, UFF) were determined. These strains were increased significantly with an increase in carbon content. The critical strain for UFF formation reduced with decrease in deformation temperature. The UFF microstructure consisted of ultrafine, equiaxed ferrite grains (<2 μm) with very fine cementite particles. In the centre of the rolled strip, there was a conventional ferrite– pearlite microstructure, although ferrite grain refinement and the volume fraction of ferrite increased with increase in the nominal equivalent strain.

Two Fe-0.2C-1.55Mn-1.5Si (in wt pet) steels, with and without the addition of 0.039Nb (in wt pet), were studied using laboratory rolling-mill simulations of controlled thermomechanical processing. The microstructures of all samples were characterized by optical metallography, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microstructural behavior of phases under applied strain was studied using a heat-tinting technique. Despite the similarity in the microstructures of the two steels (equal amounts of polygonal ferrite, carbide-free bainite, and retained austenite), the mechanical properties were different. The mechanical properties of these transformation-induced-plasticity (TRIP) steels depended not only on the individual behavior of all these phases, but also on the interaction between the phases during deformation. The polygonal ferrite and bainite of the C-Mn-Si steel contributed to the elongation more than these phases in the C-Mn-Si-Nb-steel. The stability of retained austenite depends on its location within the microstructure, the morphology of the bainite, and its interaction with other phases during straining. Granular bainite was the bainite morphology that provided the optimum stability of the retained austenite.

A 304 austenitic stainless steel was deformed using hot torsion to study the evolution of dynamic recrystallization (DRX). The initial nucleation of dynamically recrystallization occurred by the bulging of pre-existing high angle grain boundaries at a strain much lower than the peak strain. At the
peak stress, only a low fraction of the prior grain boundaries were covered with new DRX grains. Beyond the peak stress, new DRX grains formed layers near the initial DRX and a necklace structure was developed. Several different mechanisms appeared to be operative in the formation of new high angle boundaries and grains. The recrystallization behaviour after deformation showed a classic transition from strain dependent to strain independent softening. This occurred at a strain beyond the
peak, where the fraction of dynamic recrystallization was only 50%.

There is now considerable interest in the development of ultrafine grained steels with an average grain size of the order of 1µm. One of the methods with currently the greatest industrial interest is by dynamic strain induced transformation from austenite to ferrite. This involves deformation below the
equilibrium transformation temperature so that transformation occurs during the deformation. However, large strains are required to completely transform the microstructure during deformation. It is potentially possible to activate transformation during deformation then continue transformation
during subsequent cooling. It is shown that there are two critical strains: the first is where dynamic transformation commences and the second is the minimum strain for a fully ultrafine final microstructure after cooling to room temperature. The deformation and potential role of dynamic
recrystallization of the dynamically formed ferrite is also considered. Overall it is clear that for full industrial exploitation there is a need to understand and exploit the competing issues of nucleation, growth and recrystallization of the ferrite by both dynamic and static processes.
