In this paper, we have proposed a method for 2D image retrieval based on object shapes. The method relies on transforming the 2D images into 3D space based on distance transform. Spherical harmonics are obtained for the 3D data and used as descriptors for the underlying 2D images. The proposed method is compared against two existing methods which use spherical harmonics for shape based retrieval of images. MPEG-7 Still Images Content Set is used for performing experiments; this dataset consists of 3621 still images. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed descriptors is significantly better than other methods in the same category.

In this paper, we propose a spectral descriptor for shapes of objects. The method relies on transforming the 2D objects into 3D space; distance transform and scale space theory is used to transform objects into 3D space. Spherical harmonics of the voxel grid are used to obtain shape descriptors. The proposed methods are compared against two existing methods which use spherical harmonics for shape based retrieval of images. Comparison is done based on ranking of images which is articulated in recall-precision curves. MPEG-7 Still Images Content Set is used for performing experiments. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed descriptor is significantly better than other methods in the same category.

Selenium-polypyrrole core-shell nanoparticles are fabricated by an in-situ polymerization process and functionalized with transferrin for targeting and imaging of human cervical cancer cells. The shell thickness and chemical composition of the as-synthesized particles can be manipulated by controlling the precursor concentration. The presence of the polymer layer can greatly increase the thermal stability of the selenium nanoparticles. The presence of transferrin molecules on the surface of the core-shell nanoparticles can significantly enhance their cellular uptake. The tranferrin-conjugated core-shell nanoparticles can be potentially used for the targeting and imaging of cancer cells.

Light scattering from small spherical particles has applications in a vast number of disciplines including astrophysics, meteorology optics and particle sizing. Mie theory provides an exact analytical characterization of plane wave scattering from spherical dielectric objects. There exist many variants of the Mie theory where fundamental assumptions of the theory has been relaxed to make generalizations. Notable such extensions are generalized Mie theory where plane waves are replaced by optical beams, scattering from lossy particles, scattering from layered particles or shells and scattering of partially coherent (non-classical) light. However, no work has yet been reported in the literature on modifications required to account for scattering when the particle or the source is in motion relative to each other. This is an important problem where many applications can be found in disciplines involving moving particle size characterization. In this paper we propose a novel approach, using special relativity, to address this problem by extending the standard Mie theory for scattering by a particle in motion with a constant speed, which may be very low, moderate or comparable to the speed of light. The proposed technique involves transforming the scattering problem to a reference frame co-moving with the particle, then applying the Mie theory in that frame and transforming the scattered field back to the reference frame of the observer.

Getting intimate: A 3D interconnected Bi0.5Sr 0.5FeO3-ð (BSF)-Ag electrocatalyst is prepared from a BSF-AgNO3 core-shell precursor in one step. The nanometer-sized Ag enhances the sintering process, enabling an optimum cathode microstructure and good cathode-to-electrolyte attachment upon firing at 850°C. A solid-oxide fuel cell based on this cathode shows a near 100% peak power density enhancement at 550°C.

The performance of the new Kinetex-C18 column was investigated. Packed with a new brand of porous shell particles, this column has an outstanding efficiency. Once corrected for the contribution of the instrument extra column volume, the minimum values of the reduced plate heights for a number of low molecular weight compounds (e.g., anthracene and naphtho[2,3-a]pyrene) were between 1.0 and 1.3, breaking the legendary record set 3 years ago by Halo-C18 packed columns. The liquid-solid mass transfer of proteins (e.g., insulin and lyzozyme) is exceptionally fast on Kinetex-C18 much faster than on the Halo-C18 column. The different contributions of dispersion and mass transfer resistances to the column efficiency were determined and discussed. The possible reasons for this extremely high column efficiency are discussed.

A polyelectrolyte/polymeric semiconductor core/shell structure is developed for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone)/polyaniline core/shell nanofibers via electrospinning and solution-phase selective polymerization. The polyelectrolyte does not work as a gate dielectric, but can provide an internal modulation from the nanointerface of the 1D core/shell nanostructure. The transistor devices display very high mobilities.

Au-doped polyacrylonitrile–polyaniline core–shell nanofibers are fabricated via electrospinning and subsequent gas-phase polymerization, providing a very high field-effect mobility of up to 11.6 cm2 V−1 s−1. This method is also suitable for other conducting polymers and may eventually lead to a new and simplified fabrication of high-performance polymer organic field-effect transistors.
