Age data revealed that growth of sand flathead samples caught within Port Phillip Bay is very different compared to those caught from outside the Bay. Results also show that recruitment is variable (dependent of several environmental parameter), and that this variability is largely responsible for trends in abundance.

Ostracoda able to tolerate significant fluctuations in salinity occur as fossils in latest Late Miocene and earliest Late Pliocene strata of the Nepean 1 borehole within the Port Phillip Basin. The main euryhaline species present are Osticythere baragwanathi (Chapman & Crespin), Leptocythere hartmanni (McKenzie), Xestoleberis cedunaensis Hartmann and Tanella gracilis Kingma. Euryhaline ostracods occur in both high diversity, high abundance fossil ostracod assemblages and in low diversity, high abundance  assemblages. These latest Late Miocene and earliest Late Pliocene fossil ostracod assemblages accumulated close to the maximum point of flooding during respective marine transgressions onto the northern Bass Strait hinterland. The presence of euryhaline Ostracoda in these assemblages  is reminiscent of ostracod occurrences associated with modern day SE Australian barrier coastlines. Euryhaline ostracods are not common in earlier Cenozoic sediments of SE Australia and Osticythere baragwanathi makes its first appearance in the latest Late Miocene beds of the Nepean 1 borehole. This latter occurrence is interpreted to reflect the initial phase of development for the modern SE Australian barrier coastline and in particular, the initial formation of Port Phillip Bay as a coastal geomorphological feature.

Along Victoria’s coastline there are 30 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that have been established to protect the state’s significant marine environmental and cultural values. These MPAs include 13 Marine National Parks (MNPs), 11 Marine Sanctuaries (MSs), 3 Marine and Coastal Parks, 2 Marine Parks, and a Marine Reserve, and together these account for 11.7% of the Victorian marine environment. The highly protected Marine National Park System, which is made up of the MNPs and MSs, covers 5.3% of Victorian waters and was proclaimed in November 2002. This system has been designed to be representative of the diversity of Victoria’s marine environment and aims to conserve and protect ecological processes, habitats, and associated flora and fauna. The Marine National Park System is spread across Victoria’s five marine bioregions with multiple MNPs and MSs in each bioregion, with the exception of Flinders bioregion which has one MNP. All MNPs and MSs are “no-take” areas and are managed under the National Parks Act (1975) - Schedules 7 and 8 respectively.

This report updates the first Marine Natural Values Study (Plummer et al. 2003) for the MPAs in the Port Phillip Bay area of the Victorian Embayments bioregion and is one of a series of five reports covering Victoria’s Marine National Park System. It uses the numerous monitoring and research programs that have increased our knowledge since declaration and aims to give a comprehensive overview of the important natural values of each MNP and MS.

Currently there is a dearth of research into Australian Indigenous knowledge and their understanding of climate change especially in regard to how it fits into their world view. Recent discussions by the National Climate Change Adaptation Research facility (NCCARF) have highlighted this deficiency but also the need to source relevant research projects that may address this knowledge and perspective, and enable the incorporation of Traditional ecological Knowledge into the planning climate change adaptions strategies in the Port Phillip Bay region thereby increasing their engagement in this discussion. Within this context, this paper examines the use and understanding of landscape, both urban and regional, surrounding Port Phillip Bay and the risks and opportunities climate change adaptation brings to the local Indigenous communities. It synthesises focused interviews with the (Wurundjeri (Yarra Valley), Wathaurong Geelong-Bellarine Peninsular) & Boon Wurrung (Mornington Peninsula)) to elicit a contemporary and local response to issues raised by NCCARF but importantly to articulate a possible Indigenous position about the formation, change and direction that Port Phillip Bay and its environs should take from their perspectives. Research draws upon how these communities have adapted to climate change physically, mentally and spiritually over their long habitation of a shared geological asset and their perceptions of climate change in respect to forecasting and adapting to climate change for this century. The project looks to uncover a longitudinal perspective of change and adaptation focused upon Indigenous views of ‘country’ and traditional custodial obligations to ‘country’ including accumulated cultural and environmental histories.

Over the last decade various waterfront cities have undergone major redevelopments, for example Wellington, Southbank (Melbourne), Baltimore, Sydney and Canary Wharf (London). These were all completed prior to the global financial climate of 2008/10. The world has changed. This paper explores the drivers for past port city redevelopment projects; What impetus drove these projects forward? What tools supported the projects to go ahead? In an unstable financial market do these remain viable? And if not are there new drivers which are stepping in to replace the classic drivers of the past? A literature review of academic, practitioner, policy documents and social media is analyzed to establish the drivers of the past, comparing these to current and future drivers. The review will be based on a survey of 40 international cities based on or near a port which have undergone significant redevelopment prior to or during the 2008/10 financial crisis. It assesses the drivers for sustainable development in port cities and explores the potential for establishing a matrix for successful sustainable development.
