Compared to terrestrial environments, grazing intensity on belowground plant parts may be particularly strong in aquatic environments, which may have great effects on plant-community structure. We observed that the submerged macrophyte, Potamogeton pectinatus, which mainly reproduces with tubers, often grows at intermediate water depth and that P. perfoliatus, which mainly reproduces with rhizomes and turions, grows in either shallow or deep water. One mechanism behind this distributional pattern may be that swans prefer to feed on P. pectinatus tubers at intermediate water depths. We hypothesised that when swans feed on tubers in the sediment, P. perfoliatus rhizomes and turions may be damaged by the uprooting, whereas the small round tubers of P. pectinatus that escaped herbivory may be more tolerant to this bioturbation. In spring 2000, we transplanted P. perfoliatus rhizomes into a P. pectinatus stand and followed growth in plots protected and unprotected, respectively, from bird foraging. Although swan foraging reduced tuber biomass in unprotected plots, leading to lower P. pectinatus density in spring 2001, this species grew well both in protected and unprotected plots later that summer. In contrast, swan grazing had a dramatic negative effect on P. perfoliatus that persisted throughout the summer of 2001, with close to no plants in the unprotected plots and high densities in the protected plots. Our results demonstrate that herbivorous waterbirds may play a crucial role in the distribution and prevalence of specific plant species. Furthermore, since their grazing benefitted their preferred food source, the interaction between swans and P. pectinatus may be classified as ecologically mutualistic.

Malaria is a major human health problem and is responsible for over 2 million deaths per year. It is caused by a number of species of the genus Plasmodium, and Plasmodium falciparum is the causative agent of the most lethal form. Consequently, the development of a vaccine against this parasite is a priority. There are a number of stages of the parasite life cycle that are being targeted for the development of vaccines. Important candidate antigens include proteins on the surface of the asexual merozoite stage, the form that invades the host erythrocyte. The development of methods to manipulate the genome of Plasmodium species has enabled the construction of gain-of-function and loss-of-function mutants and provided new strategies to analyse the role of parasite proteins. This has provided new information on the role of merozoite antigens in erythrocyte invasion and also allows new approaches to address their potential as vaccine candidates.

Multilobal fibres are irregularly shaped fibres with several surface channels or grooves. Scaffolds created from these fibres have high surface area which may enhance cell density. This study compared the cell growth of dermal fibroblasts and osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells on multilobal fibre nonwoven scaffolds to the conventional fibre scaffolds. Cells were cultured on round nylon, trilobal nylon, round polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and multilobal PET scaffolds for 14 days. There were more cells growing on trilobal nylon and PET multilobal scaffolds than their round counterparts. The preference to the type of multilobal scaffolds was cell dependent. The density of fibroblast increased 37% on trilobal nylon compared to round nylon scaffolds after 14 days of culture. SaOS2 cells preferred the multilobal PET scaffolds, exhibiting a 66% increase in cell number after 14 days of culture. Scaffolds manufactured from multilobal fibres have the ability to accommodate a high number of cells, demonstrating a great potential in tissue engineering applications.

Wet textile colouration has the highest environmental impact of all textile processing steps. It consumes water, chemicals and energy and produces liquid, heat and gas waste streams. Liquid effluent streams are often quite toxic to the environment. There are a number of different dyeing processes, normally fibre type specific, and each has a different impact on the environment. This research investigated the energy, chemical and water requirements for the exhaust colouration of cotton, wool, polyester and nylon. The research investigated the liquid waste biological and chemical oxygen demand, salinity, pH and colour along with the energy required for drying after colouration. Polyester fibres had the lowest impact on the environment with lowest water and energy consumption in dyeing, good dye bath exhaustion, the lowest salinity levels in their effluent, relatively neutral pH effluent and low energy in drying. The wool and nylon had similar dye bath requirements and outputs however the nylon could be dyed at far lower liquor ratios and hence provided better energy and water use figures. The cotton and wool required high energy consumption in drying after colouration. Cotton performed poorly in all of the measured parameters.

Multilobal fibres contain several grooves and have higher surface area than round fibres. Cell density can be enhanced when cultured on scaffolds manufactured with multilobal fibres. This study compared the cell growth of dermal fibroblasts and osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells on polymeric scaffolds produced from multilobal fibres to the conventional round-fibred scaffolds. Cells were cultured on round nylon 6,6, trilobal nylon 6,6, round polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and multilobal PET scaffolds for 14 days. There were more cells cultured on trilobal nylon 6,6 and PET multilobal scaffolds than their round counterparts. Preference to the type of multilobal scaffolds was cell dependent. Fibroblasts increased by 21.8 ± 1.9 fold to 6.3 × 105 cells (p < 0.001) when cultured on trilobal nylon 6,6 scaffolds while SaOS2 cells exhibited a 16.7 ± 2.8 fold increase (2.9 × 105 cells, p < 0.001) on the multilobal PET scaffolds after 14 days of culture. The ability of multilobal fibres to accommodate large quantities of cells presents an excellent alternative to round fibres as scaffolds for tissue engineering.

The corrosion behavior of magnesium single crystals with various crystallographic orientations was examined in this study. To identify the effects of surface orientation on the corrosion behavior in a systematic manner, single-crystal specimens with ten different rotation angles of the plane normal from the [0001] direction to the [1010] direction at intervals of 10° were prepared and subjected to potentiodynamic polarization and potentiostatic tests as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Potentiodynamic polarization results showed that the pitting potential (E pit) first decreased from −1.57 V SCE to −1.64 V SCE with an increase in the rotation angle from 0° to 40°, and then increased to −1.60 V SCE with a further increase in the rotation angle to 90°. The results obtained from potentiostatic tests are also in agreement with the trend in potentiodynamic polarization tests as a function of rotation angle. A similar trend was also observed for the depressed semicircle and the total resistances in the EIS measurements due to the facile formation of MgO and Mg(OH)2 passive films on the magnesium surface. In addition, the amount of chloride in the passive film was found first to increase with an increase in rotation angle from 0° to 40°, then decrease with a further increase in rotation angle, indicating that the tendency to form a more protective passive film increased for rotation angle near 0° [the (0001) plane] or 90° [the (1010) plane].

This study examined the feasibility of assessing yarns with the Wool ComfortMeter (WCM) to predict the comfort properties of the corresponding single jersey-knitted fabrics. The optimum yarn arrangement to predict the comfort value of a corresponding control fabric was determined using nine wool and wool/nylon-blended yarns (mean fibre diameter range 16.5–24.9 μm) knitted into 34 different fabrics. Using a notched template, yarn winding frequencies of 1, 3, 6, 12, 25 and 50 parallel yarns were tested on the WCM. The best predictor of fabric WCM values was using 25 parallel yarns. Inclusion of knitting gauge and cover factor slightly improved predictions. This indicates that evaluation at the yarn stage would be a reliable predictor of knitted fabric comfort, and thus yarn testing would avoid the time and expense of fabric construction.

This study details the removal of common storm water pollutants along with heavy metals by enhanced sand filtration. Three filtration flow rates were trialled: 5, 10 and 20 m/h. The performance of each filter was rated on the ability to remove turbidity, suspended solids, dissolved solids, phosphorus, nitrogen, lead, copper and Zinc. Conventional sand filter was used as a performance benchmark, and compared with four sand filters that are enhanced with a nylon carpet fibre, polypropylene carpet fibre, Syrian carpet fibre-enhanced and alum sludge-enhanced sand filter. Carpet fibre-enhanced sand filtration was highly effective at filtering simulated storm water and in most cases performing well above the conventional sand filters. The carpet fibre-enhanced sand filters had no drop in flow rates over the 4 h filtration period with following removal rates: up to 90% total suspended solids, 70% zinc, 60% turbidity, 25% phosphorus, 15% nitrogen and 10% total dissolved solids. However, results showed that alum sludge-enhanced sand filter performed the highest, with removal rates up to 100% for total suspended solids, 80% zinc, 90% turbidity, up to 80% phosphorus, up to 40% nitrogen and 3% total dissolved solids. But the flow rates dropped approximately two-thirds of the original flow rates within the first hour. © 2014 © 2014 Balaban Desalination Publications. All rights reserved.

This meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials assessed the effect of Ca on body weight and body composition through supplementation or increasing dairy food intake. Forty-one studies met the inclusion criteria (including fifty-one trial arms; thirty-one with dairy foods (n 2091), twenty with Ca supplements (n 2711). Ca intake was approximately 900 mg/d higher in the supplement groups compared with control. In the dairy group, Ca intake was approximately 1300 mg/d. Ca supplementation did not significantly affect body weight (mean change ( - 0·17, 95 % CI - 0·70, 0·37) kg) or body fat (mean change ( - 0·19, 95 % CI - 0·51, 0·13) kg) compared to control. Similarly, increased dairy food intake did not affect body weight ( - 0·06, 95 % CI - 0·54, 0·43) kg or body fat change ( - 0·36, 95 % CI - 0·80, 0·09) kg compared to control. Sub-analyses revealed that dairy supplementation resulted in no change in body weight (nineteen studies, n 1010) ( - 0·32, 95 % CI - 0·93, 0·30 kg, P= 0·31), but a greater reduction in body fat (thirteen studies, n 564) ( - 0·96, 95 % CI - 1·46, - 0·46 kg, P < 0·001) in the presence of energy restriction over a mean of 4 months compared to control. Increasing dietary Ca intake by 900 mg/d as supplements or increasing dairy intake to approximately 3 servings daily (approximately 1300 mg of Ca/d) is not an effective weight reduction strategy in adults. There is, however, an indication that approximately 3 servings of dairy may facilitate fat loss on weight reduction diets in the short term.

Abstract
In this study, a model was set up for simulating the effects of varying fiber cross-sectional shapes on ultraviolet protection of fibers. The fiber diameter and fiber type were also involved in the model setting. Experiments of diffuse reflectance spectra measurement on natural (wool, cotton, silk), regenerated (bamboo viscose) and synthetic (polyester, nylon) fibers were conducted to verify the model predicted results. When a more complex shape was assumed as the fiber cross-section for model calculation, the predicted results have a better agreement with the actual results. The effects on ultraviolet absorption from fibers with different cross-sectional shapes were investigated at a single fiber, fiber bundle and yarn levels. With the same material, when the fiber cross-sectional area and the areal coverage of a single fiber were constant, the triangular shape had the lowest ultraviolet transmittance and the highest ultraviolet reflectance for a single fiber and also for a fiber bundle. The difference of fiber cross-sectional shapes was also significant in the ultraviolet protection of a single yarn.

This paper addresses the methods used for the design and fabrication of a capacitance based wearable pressure sensor fabricated using neoprene and (SAC) plated Nylon Fabric. The experimental set up for the pressure sensor is comprised of a shielded grid of sensing modules, a 555 timer based transduction circuitry, and an Arduino board measuring the frequency of signal to a corresponding pressure. The fundamental design parameters addressed during the development of the pressure sensor presented in this paper are based on size, simplicity, cost, adaptability, and scalability. The design approach adopted in this paper results in a sensor module that is less obtrusive, has a thinner and flexible profile, and its sensitivity is easily scalable for ‘smart’ product applications across industries associated to sports performance, ergonomics, rehabilitation, etc.

This paper discusses design and fabrication processes in the development of a wearable and flexible conductive resistive sensor. The design and development of the sensor involve the use of Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC)plated Nylon fabric, precisionfused deposition modeling(FDM) using silicone and petrolatum for etch-resistant masks using the EnvisionTEC GmbH Bioplotter, and wet etching using Chromium, Ammonium Persulphate, and Salt-Vinegar etching solutions. Preliminary testing with other mask types, development processes, and sensor design approaches for various applications are discussed.
