The aim of this book is to describe, collate, and summarise a body of recent research, both theoretical and empirical, that explores the issue of treatment readiness in offender programming. The book is divided into three different sections.

The first section unpacks a model of treatment readiness and how it has been operationalised; the second section discusses how the construct has been applied to the treatment of different offender groups; and in the final section, some of the practice approaches that have been identified as holding promise in addressing low levels of offender readiness are discussed.

The commonly held perception that high conductivity in conducting polymers is linked to a high level of π-stacking order in the material is shown here to be of lesser importance in highly conducting poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDT), which has been prepared by chemical vapour phase polymerisation. Despite the fact that there is a highly energetic phase transition about 130 °C (110 J/g), and that this transition corresponds to a loss of the long-range π-stacking as observed in grazing angle XRD, the conductivity remains unchanged beyond the transition and only decreases by a factor of two when heating to above 200 °C. The XRD data suggest that order in two dimension remains above the phase transition measured by DSC and this order is sufficient to maintain a high level of electronic conductivity. Furthermore, as the ligand on the iron salt used in the synthesis is varied, the conductivity of the PEDT varies over two orders of magnitude. These phenomena cannot be explained by different degree of doping or crystallinity and it is proposed that the iron salt has an ordering effect during the vapour phase polymerisation.

Castells argues that society is being reconstituted according to the global logic of networks. This paper discusses the ways in which a globalised network logic transforms the nature of young people’s transitions from school to work. Furthermore, the paper explores the ways in which this network logic restructures the manner in which youth transitions are managed via the emergence of a Vocational Education and Training (VET) agenda in Australian post compulsory secondary schooling. It also notes the implications of the emergence of the ‘network society’ for locality generally and for selected localities specific to the research upon which this paper is based. It suggests that schools represent nodes in a range of VET and other networks, and shows how schools and other agencies in particular localities mobilise their expertise to construct such networks. These networks are networked, funded and regulated at various levels—regionally, nationally and globally. But, they are also facilitated by personal networking opportunities and capacities. The paper also points to the ways in which the ‘refexivity chances’ of young people are shaped by this network logic—a situation that generates new forms of responsibility, for schools and teachers, with regard to the management of youth transitions.

A central theme of Beck’s argument in The Brave New World of Work (2000) is that labour markets in the developed world are taking on some of the core characteristics that have been associated with less developed labour markets such as employment insecurity, informality and precarity. A process he refers to as Brazilianisation. In this paper we consider whether Beck’s thesis can help us understand changes in youth transitions in Australia and the UK by developing a comparative analysis of processes of casualisation in the youth labour markets of the two countries. We assess the extent to which precarious labour market biographies have become entrenched and represent modern forms of engagement with the labour market. While evidence is presented to suggest that young people’s labour market experiences have been affected by a trend towards greater casualisation, we argue that the changes are having the greatest impact on those in the weakest positions: in both countries women are more likely to be affected than men and casualisation is most evident in the lowest skilled occupations.

Aim. To identify life transitions likely to impact diabetes self-care among young adults with Type 1 diabetes and their coping strategies during transition events.
Background. Relationships among psychosocial stress, adjustment, coping and metabolic control affect clinical outcomes and mental health. Life transitions represent major change and are associated with stress that temporarily affects individuals’ problem-solving, coping abilities and blood glucose levels.
Design. A qualitative interpretive inquiry.
Method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 young adults with Type 1 diabetes and a constant comparative analysis method. Data and analysis was managed using QSR NVIVO 7 software.
Results. Participants identified two significant transition groups: life development associated with adolescence, going through the education system, entering new relationships, motherhood and the workforce and relocating. Diabetes-related transitions included being diagnosed, developing diabetes complications, commencing insulin pump treatment and going on diabetes camps. Participants managed transitions using ‘strategic thinking and planning’ with strategies of ‘self-negotiation to minimise risks’; ‘managing diabetes using previous experiences’; ‘connecting with others with diabetes’; ‘actively seeing information to ‘patch’ knowledge gaps’; and ‘putting diabetes into perspective’.
Conclusions. Several strategies are used to manage diabetes during transitions. Thinking and planning strategically was integral to glycaemic control and managing transitions. The impact of transitions on diabetes needs to be explored in larger and longitudinal studies to identify concrete strategies that assist diabetes care during life transitions.
Relevance to clinical practice. It is important for health professionals to understand the emotional, social and cognitive factors operating during transitions to assist young adults with Type 1 diabetes to achieve good health outcomes by prioritising goals and plan flexible, timely, individualised and collaborative treatment.

The rheological properties of supramolecular soft functional materials are determined by the networks within the materials. This research reveals for the first time that the volume confinement during the formation of supramolecular soft functional materials will exert a significant impact on the rheological properties of the materials. A class of small molecular organogels formed by the gelation of N-lauroyl-L-glutamic acid din-butylamide (GP-1) in ethylene glycol (EG) and propylene glycol (PG) solutions were adopted as model systems for this study. It follows that within a confined space, the elasticity of the gel can be enhanced more than 15 times compared with those under un-restricted conditions. According to our optical microscopy observations and rheological measurements, this drastic enhancement is caused by the structural transition from a multi-domain network system to a single network system once the average size of the fiber network of a given material reaches the lowest dimension of the system. The understanding acquired from this work will provide a novel strategy to manipulate the network structure of soft materials, and exert a direct impact on the micro-engineering of such supramolecular materials in micro and nano scales.

The high-pressure behaviors of MOO3·1/2H2O and MOO3·2H2O have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell up to 31.3 and 30.3 GPa, respectively. In the pressure range up to around 30 GPa, both MOO3·1/2H2O and MOO3·2H2O undergo two reversible structural phase transitions. We observed a subtle structural transition due to O−H···O hydrogen bond in MOO3·1/2H2O at 3.3 GPa. We found a soft mode phase transition in MOO3·2H2O at 6.6 GPa. At higher pressures, a frequency discontinuity shift and appearance of new peaks occurred in both MOO3·1/2H2O and MOO3·2H2O, indicating that the second phase transition is a first-order transition. The frequency redshift of the O−H stretching bands of MOO3·1/2H2O and MOO3·2H2O are believed to be related to the enhancement of the O−H···O weak hydrogen bonds under high pressures.
