N-Ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (12) was synthesised from adenosine (1) and the 6-chloro-2’,3’-O-isopropylidene-AT-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (25) was synthesised from inosine (19). Employing molecular modelling techniques and the results from previous structure activity relationships it was possible to design and synthesise a N6-substituted N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosines which possessed an oxygen in the N6-substituent either in the form of an epoxide (which was obtained by cpoxidising an alkene with m-CPBA or dimethyldioxirane) or in the form of a cyclic ether as was the case for N6-((tetrahydro-2H--pyran--2-yl)methyl-N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (78). These compounds were tested for their biological activity at the A1 adenosine receptor by their ability to inhibit cAMP accumulation in DDT, MF2 cells. The EC50 values obtained indicated that the N6-(norborn-5-en-2-yl)-N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosines were the most potent. Of theseN6-(S-endo-norbrn-5-en-2-yI)-N-ethylcarboxaniidoadenosine (56) was the most potent (0.2 nM). N6-(exo-norborn-5-en-2-yl)-2-iodo-N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (79) was synthesised from guanosine (22) and was also evaluated for its potency at the A, receptor (24.8 ± 1.5 nM). At present 79 is being evaluated for its selectivity for the A1 receptor compared to the other three receptor subtypes (A2a, A2b, A3). A series of N6-(benzyl)-N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosines were synthesised with substitutions at the 4-position of the phenyl ring. Another series of compounds were synthesised which replaced the methylene spacer between the N6H and the N6-aromatic or lipophilic substituent The replacement groups -were carbonyl and trans-2- cyclopropyl moieties. The N6-acyl compounds were obtained by reacting 2’,3’-O- di(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-AT-ethylcarboxamidoadenosinc (59) with the appropriate acid chloride and then deprotecting with lelrabutylammonium fluoride in tetrahydrofuran. The compound N6-(4-(1,2-dihydroxy)ethyl)benzyl-N- ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (125) was synthesised by the reaction of 4-(1,2-0- isopropylidene-ethyl)benzyl aminc (123) with 6-chloro-2,3-0-isopropylidene-N- ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (25). Compound 123 was synthesised from an epoxidation of vinylbenzyl phthalimide (118) followed by an acidic ring opening to yield the diol which was isopropylidenated to yield 4-(l,2-O-isopropylidene- elhyl)benzyl phlhalimide (122), It was hoped that the presence of the diol functionality in 125 would increase water solubility whilst maintaining potency at the A3 receptor.

Blends of poly(2-vinyl pyridine)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (P2VP-b-PMMA) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) were prepared by solvent casting from chloroform solution. The specific interactions, phase behavior and nanostructure morphologies of these blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this block copolymer/homopolymer blend system, it is established that competitive hydrogen bonding exists as both blocks of the P2VP-b-PMMA are capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with phenoxy. It was observed that the interaction between phenoxy and P2VP is stronger than that between phenoxy and PMMA. This imbalance in the intermolecular interactions and the repulsions between the two blocks of the diblock copolymer lead to a variety of phase morphologies. At low phenoxy concentration, spherical micelles are observed. As the concentration increases, PMMA begins to interact with phenoxy, leading to the changes of morphology from spherical to wormlike micelles and finally forms a homogenous system. A model is proposed to describe the self-assembled nanostructures of the P2VP-b-PMMA/phenoxy blends, and the competitive hydrogen bonding is responsible for the morphological changes.

Above 110 °C the symmetric di-methyl-pyrrolidinium iodide salt forms a plastic crystal phase of interest in the area of new electrolyte materials. In this study ab initio calculations of this material has been conducted in order to assign the vibrational spectra. Raman spectroscopy measurements on the solid salt as well as on the salt dissolved in different solvents has been performed and these have been compared to the theoretical spectra. Furthermore, Raman spectra as a function of temperature have been recorded to investigate possible changes in inter-ionic interaction and/or structure through the phase transition. 1H NMR linewidth measurements as a function of temperature showed a large decrease in linewidth above 100 °C, attributed here to an increase in mobility in agreement with a previously reported phase transition at ~110 °C.

The binary and ternary addition of 2 wt.% LiBF4 and 2 wt.% amorphous polyethylene oxide (aPEO) respectively to the plastic crystal forming salt P13BF4 (where P13+=methylpropyl pyrrolidinium cation) was investigated with specific focus on the phase behaviour and evaluation of transport characteristics. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical thermomicroscopy, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and AC impedance spectroscopy were used to develop an understanding of the conduction process in the pure and mixed systems. The morphology of the ternary compound appeared as hexagonal spherulites upon solidification. Multinuclear NMR Pulsed Field Gradient measurements (1H,19F,7Li) to probe both cation and anion diffusion coefficients are reported. The anion is shown to be the most diffusive (at 320 K:19F=2.5×10−11 m2 s−1; 1H: 1.8×10−11 m2 s−1; 7Li: 1.1×10−11 m2 s−1) in the ternary compound, with enhanced conductivity (2.7×10−5 S cm−1 at 310 K) just below the melt.

The plastic crystal phase forming N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate organic salt (P13BF4) was combined with 2, 5 and 10 wt.% poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). The ternary 2 wt.% PVP/2 wt.% LiBF4/P13BF4 was also investigated. Thermal analysis, conductivity, optical thermomicroscopy, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (11B, 19F, 1H, 7Li) were used to probe the fundamental transport processes. Both the onset of phase I and the final melting temperature were reduced with increasing additions of PVP. Conductivity in phase I was 2.6 × 10− 4 S cm− 1 5.2 × 10− 4 S cm− 1 1.1 × 10− 4 S cm− 1 and 3.9 × 10− 5 S cm− 1 for 0, 2, 5 and 10 wt.%PVP/P13BF4, respectively. Doping with 2 wt.% LiBF4 increased the conductivity by up to an order of magnitude in phase II. Further additions of 2 wt.% PVP slightly reduced the conductivity, although it remained higher than for pure P13BF4.

A microstructural characterisation of the family of N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate organic salts was carried out by observation of powder surface morphologies with the aim of extending the microstructure-property correlation. Inherent difficulties limiting extensive studies of organic solids by SEM, including volatility under vacuum, charging due to electron beam irradiation, and air-sensitivity were overcome with the use of a Field Emission SEM and cryostage attachment. This technique, providing considerable improvements in image quality at low accelerating voltages, enabled direct observation of complex microstructural features in samples exhibiting high temperature plastic crystalline phases (N,N-dimethylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate [P11BF4]; N-methyl-N-ethylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate [P12BF4]; N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate [P13BF4]). Extensive lattice imperfections including grain boundaries, slip planes and dislocation pits were observed within particles of approximately 200 mgrm diameter. The N-methyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate (P14BF4) sample in this series revealed columnar single crystals with high aspect ratios. The origin of plastic flow properties is discussed using single crystal and polycrystalline slip observations and a relationship proposed between defect characteristics and transport properties.

The incorporation of dopant levels of lithium ions (0.5 to 9.3% by mole) in the N-methyl-N-ethylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (P12TFSA) plastic crystalline phase results in increases in the solid state ionic conductivity of more than 3 orders of magnitude at 298 K. Conductivities as high as 10−-4 S cm−1 at 323 K have been measured in these doped plastic crystal phases. These materials can therefore be classified as fast-ion conductors. Higher levels of Li only marginally increase the conductivity, up to around 33 mol%, followed by a slight decrease to 50 mol%. Thermal analysis behaviour has allowed the partial development of the binary phase diagram for the LiTFSA–P12TFSA system between 0–50 mol% LiTFSA, which suggests the presence of a solid solution single phase at concentrations less than 9.3 mol% LiTFSA. There is also strong evidence of eutectic behaviour in this system with a eutectic transition temperature around 308 K at 33 mol% LiTFSA. A model relating ionic conduction to phase behaviour in this system is presented. The increased conductivity upon doping has been associated with lithium ion motion via7Li solid state NMR linewidth measurements.

A series of N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate salts were synthesised. The spectroscopic, physical and electrochemical characteristics of this family of salts have been investigated with respect to potential usage as ionic solvents and electrolytes. The lowest melting point among the family is 64°C for the N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate (P13BF4). This is sufficiently low to enable this salt to be useful as an ionic liquid in chemical synthesis involving reactions above 70°C. Most of the compounds exhibit one or more solid–solid transitions below the melting point, this behaviour is thought to indicate the existence of plastic crystal phases.

A series of N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium nonafluoro-1-butanesulfonate salts were synthesised and characterised. The thermophysical characteristics of this family of salts have been investigated with respect to potential use as ionic liquids and solid electrolytes. N-Methyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium nonafluoro-1-butanesulfonate (p1,4NfO) has the lowest melting point of the family, at 94 °C. Electrochemical analysis of p1,4 NfO in the liquid state shows an electrochemical window of ~6 V. All compounds exhibit one or more solid–solid transitions at sub-ambient temperatures, indicating the existence of plastic crystal phases.

The preparation and characterization of a series of novel salts, based on the N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium or quaternary ammonium organic cations coupled with sulfonate type anions, namely the mesylate (CH3SO3) and tosylate (CH3C6H4SO3) anions are reported. These salts are analogues of the previously described organic cation bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (TFSA) salts that form useful ionic liquids of interest in “Green” synthesis. Several of the salts are liquid below 50 °C, e.g. tributylhexylammonium tosylate and ethylmethylpyrrolidinium mesylate and one is liquid at and below room temperature (tributylhexylammonium mesylate). These new salts have a cost advantage over salts of the TFSA, PF6 and CF3SO3 anions. Electrochemical and thermal properties have been investigated. The salts are stable to beyond 100 °C and exhibit electrochemical potential windows of at least ±2 V vs. Ag/Ag+. Some of the salts exhibit multiple crystalline phases below their melting points, potentially indicative of plastic crystal behaviour, whilst others showed more simple solid–liquid behaviour. Many of the salts were found to be glass forming.

A new series of salts, based on the N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium cation and the PF6- anion, are reported and their thermal properties described for alkyl = Me, Et, Pr, Bu, Hx, and Hp. X-ray structures of several of the salts are also reported. The N,N-dimethylpyrrolidinium hexafluorophosphate has a melting point greater than 390 °C; however, the N-methyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium derivative melts at 70 °C. Most of the PF6- salts were observed to have lower melting points in comparison with the analogous iodide salts. Most of the salts exhibit one or more thermal transitions prior to melting and a final entropy of melting less than 20 J K-1 mol-1, behavior which has previously been associated with the formation of plastic crystal phases. Good crystal structure solutions were obtained at low temperatures in the case of the alkyl = propyl and heptyl derivatives. The loss of diffraction peaks and changes in symmetry at higher temperatures indicated the presence of dynamic rotational disorder, supporting the understanding that the plastic properties arise from rotational motions in the crystal.

The crystal structure of a 1,2,3-trisubstituted imidazolium salt of the bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)]amide ion is presented; this salt is a prototype for similar, room temperature liquid, imidazolium salts; the structure shows that the anion and cation interact weakly, with little if any hydrogen bonding present.
