Extracellular pili-like structures (PLS) produced by cyanobacteria have been poorly explored. We have done detailed topographical and electrical characterisation of PLS in Nostoc punctiforme PCC 73120 using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM). TEM analysis showed that N. punctiforme produces two separate types of PLS differing in their length and diameter. The first type of PLS are 6-7.5 nm in diameter and 0.5-2 µm in length (short/thin PLS) while the second type of PLS are ~20-40 nm in diameter and more than 10 µm long (long/thick PLS). This is the first study to report long/thick PLS in N. punctiforme. Electrical characterisation of these two different PLS by CAFM showed that both are electrically conductive and can act as microbial nanowires. This is the first report to show two distinct PLS and also identifies microbial nanowires in N. punctiforme. This study paves the way for more detailed investigation of N. punctiforme nanowires and their potential role in cell physiology and symbiosis with plants.

By reacting 2- and 3-aminobenzoic acids (HL1 and HL2, respectively), as well as 2-, 3- and 4-((E)-2-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]diazenyl)benzoic acids (HL3, HL4 and HL5, in this order) with a n-butyltin(IV) source [ n BuSn(O)OH or n Bu2SnO], the drum-type butylstannoxane complexes of general composition [ n Bu6Sn6O6(L n )6] [L n =L1 (1), L2 (2) and L3 (3)] and the ladder-type compounds [ n Bu8Sn4O2(L n )4] [L n =L3 (5), L4 (6) and L5 (7)] were obtained and fully characterized. By reacting 1 with 2-((E)-[4-(dimethylamino)benzylidene]amino)benzoic acid (HL6), a co-crystal (4) was achieved which comprises the metal complex aggregate found in 1 and the neutral HL6 molecule. The solution properties of the compounds were assessed from 1H and 13C NMR studies and, for the metal complexes, also from 119Sn NMR. The molecular structures of 1, 2, 4-7 were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1-3 and the complex moiety of 4 display hexameric Sn6O6 clusters with drum-like structures, but 5-7 reveal Sn4O2 cores with ladder-type structural motifs. Besides the observed relationship between the ligand N-functional group and obtained (drum- or ladder-type) assemblies, the relative position of the carboxylate group in the ligand itself influences its coplanarity.

.A novel electrochemical sensing platform was developed based on flower-like gold–zinc oxide core–shell nanoparticles and a graphene nanocomposite-modified glassy carbon electrode. The gold–zinc oxide core–shell nanoflowers were synthesized by seed growth and characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. The modified electrode provided good electrocatalytic properties, rapid response, high stability, and favorable reproducibility for determination of ascorbic acid. The performance of the sensor included a linear dynamic range from 1.0 × 10−7 to 6.0 × 10−4 M, a limit of detection of 3.9 × 10−8 M, and a sensitivity of 24.12 µA/mM. The nanocomposite also provided excellent selectivity and lower potential for the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The sensor was used for the determination of ascorbic acid in tablets with satisfactory results. This device provides rapid, simple, and selective determination of ascorbic acid.

This paper proposes a neural network model using genetic algorithm for a model for the prediction of the damage condition of existing light structures founded in expansive soils in Victoria, Australia. It also accounts for both individual effects and interactive effects of the damage factors influencing the deterioration of light structures. A Neural Network Model was chosen because it can deal with 'noisy' data while a Genetic Algorithm was chosen because it does not get `trapped' in local optimum like other gradient descent methods. The results obtained were promising and indicate that a Neural Network Model trained using a Genetic Algorithm has the ability to develop an interactive relationship and a Predicted Damage Conditions Model.

Two new inorganic-organic polymeric hybrids [Sn(pcp)] and [Cu(pcp)], pcp = CH2(PhPO2)22-, have been synthesized and structurally chracterized. The tin derivative has been obtained by reaction of the p,p'-diphenylmethylenediphosphinic acid (H2pcp) in water with SnCl2·2H2O, while the copper derivative has been synthesized through a hydrothermal reaction from the same H2pcp acid and Cu(O2CMe)2·H2O. The structures of these compounds have been solved "ab initio" by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) data. [Sn(pcp)] has a ladder-like polymeric structure, with tin(II) centers bridged by diphenylmethylenediphosphinate ligands, and alternating six- and eight-membered rings. The hemilectic coordination around the metal shows the tin(II) lone pair to be operative, resulting in significant interaction mainly with a C-C bond of one phenyl ring. The [Cu(pcp)] complex displays a polymeric columnar structure formed by two intersecting sinusoidal ribbons of copper(II) ions bridged by the bifunctional phosphinate ligands. The intersections of the ribbons are made of dimeric units of pentacoordinated copper ions. Crystal data for [Sn(pcp)]: monoclinic, space group P21Ic, a = 11.2851(1), b = 15.4495(6), c = 8.6830(1) Å, β= 107.546(1)°, V = 1443.44(9) Å, Z = 4. Crystal data for [Cu(pcp)]: triclinic, space group P, a = 10.7126(4), b = 13.0719(4), c = 4.9272(3) Å, α= 92.067(5), β= 95.902(7), γ= 87.847(4)°, V = 685.47(7), Z = 2. The tin compound has been characterized by 119Sn MAS NMR (magic-angle spinning NMR), revealing asymmetry in the valence electron cloud about tin. Low-temperature magnetic measurements of the copper compound have indicated the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions below 50 K.

Optimum subwindow search for object detection aims to find a subwindow so that the contained subimage is most similar to the query object. This problem can be formulated as a four dimensional (4D) maximum entry search problem wherein each entry corresponds to the quality score of the subimage contained in a subwindow. For n x n images, a naive exhaustive search requires O(n4) sequential computations of the quality scores for all subwindows. To reduce the time complexity, we prove that, for some typical similarity functions like Euclidian metric, χ2 metric on image histograms, the associated 4D array carries some Monge structures and we utilise these properties to speed up the optimum subwindow search and the time complexity is reduced to O(n3). Furthermore, we propose a locally optimal alternating column and row search method with typical quadratic time complexity O(n2). Experiments on PASCAL VOC 2006 demonstrate that the alternating method is significantly faster than the well known efficient subwindow search (ESS) method whilst the performance loss due to local maxima problem is negligible.

Optimisation techniques have become more and more important as the possibility of simulating complex mechanical structures has become a reality. A common tool in the layout design of structural parts is the topology optimisation method, which finds an optimum material distribution within a given geometrical design space to best meet loading conditions and constraints. Another important method is shape optimisation, which optimises weight given parametric geometric constraints. In the case of complex shaped parts or elaborate assemblies, for example automobile body structures, shape optimisation is still hard to do; mainly due to the difficulty in translating shape design parameters into meaningful analysis models. Tools like the parametric geometry package SFE CONCEPT are designed to mitigate these issues. Nevertheless, shape methods usually cannot suggest new load path configurations, while topology methods are often confined to single parts. To overcome these limitations the authors have developed a method that combines both approaches into an Integral Shape/Topology Method (IST) that is capable of finding new optimal solutions. This is achieved by an automated optimisation loop and can be applied for both thin walled structures as well as solid 3D geometries. When optimising structures by applying IST, global optimum solutions can be determined that may not be obtained with isolated shape- or topology-optimisation methods.

Statistical copolymers of indigo (1a) and N-acetylindigo (1b) building blocks with defined structures were studied. They belong to the class of polymeric colorants. The polymers consist of 5,5′-connected indigo units with keto structure and N-acetylindigo units with uncommon tautomeric indoxyl/indolone (=1H-indol-3-ol/3H-indol-3-one) structure (see 2a and 2b in Fig. 1). They formed amorphous salts of elongated monomer lengths as compared to monomeric indigo. The polymers were studied by various spectroscopic and physico-chemical methods in solid state and in solution. As shown by small-angle-neutron scattering (SANS) and transmission-electron microscopy (TEM), disk-like polymeric aggregates were present in concentrated solutions (DMSO and aq. NaOH soln.). Their thickness and radii were determined to be ca. 0.4 and ca. 80 nm, respectively. From the disk volumes and by a Guinier analysis, the molecular masses of the aggregates were calculated, which were in good agreement with each other. Defined structural changes of the polymer chains were observed during several-weeks storage in concentrated DMSO solutions. The original keto structure of the unsubstituted indigo building blocks reverted to the more flexible indoxyl/indolone structure. The new polymers were simultaneously stabilized by intermolecular H-bonds to give aggregates, preferentially dimers. Both aggregation and tautomerization were reversible upon dissolution. The polymers were synthesized by repeated oxidative coupling of 1,1′-diacetyl-3,3′-dihydroxybis-indoles 5 (from 1,1′-diacetyl-3,3′-bis(acetyloxy)bis-indoles 6) followed by gradual hydrolysis of the primarily formed poly(N,N′-diacetylindigos) 7 (Scheme). N,N′-Diacetylbis-anthranilic acids 9 were isolated as by-products.

Phonon properties of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) were investigated using Raman spectroscopy at different temperatures and new sp3- bonded BN vibrations were identified. The Raman peak of the E2g mode of BNNTs is found to be downshifted and broadened compared to that of hexagonal BN at the same temperature. By increasing the temperature, the energy of the E2g mode and the sp3-bonding mode are downshifted, with the temperature coefficients being -0.010 and -0.069cm-1/K, respectively. We attribute this downshifting to anharmonic effects as well as the elongation of the B-N bond in BNNT structures with increasing temperature. © 2014 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

Prose poems are frequently characterised as fragmentary or incomplete in the way that they gesture to a larger, often unnamed, frame of reference; present small, sometimes unfinished narratives which are implied to be parts of larger narrative structures; and are often characterised by considerable indeterminacy. In this respect, it may be argued that prose poetry traces part of its lineage back to Romantic fragment poems—indeed, at least as far back as James Macpherson’s Ossian “translations”. In the Romantic period, fragments were understood as reflecting the idea of the imperfectability of contemporary human existence, aided by the antiquarian attraction of many Romantic writers to the ruins and relics of the classical past and an associated preference for the evocation of notions of infinitude and boundlessness. This paper argues that prose poems gesture to this Romantic genealogy in their concern with openness and diversity, and the reshaping of literary-aesthetic boundaries to metonymically explore incompleteness. The paper takes its name from Friedrich Schelgel’s Igel. Schlegel famously described the fragment as an Igel, or hedgehog, because of its autonomy and isolation from the wider world. One way of understanding the renaissance of the prose poem in the last 35 years, is to apply the Schlegelian metaphor of a hedgehog to contemporary prose poems in order to argue that this hybrid genre remains in dialogue with the fragmented literary works of the past. This paper argues that as prose poetry continues to explore fissured identity and plurality in a postmodern society, it owes a significant debt to postmodernism’s Romantic and fragmented inheritance.

This paper explores issues of equity and group identity at ‘Hamilton Court’, a large comprehensive multi-faith and multi-cultural school located in England. The exploration draws on data gathered from a study that examined the conditions, structures and practices associated with productively addressing issues of justice and cultural diversity. The paper focuses, in particular, on the voices of two learning mentors, ‘Rosanna’ and ‘Yasmeen’. With reference to a cultural event at the school based around an Asian-inspired Bollywood Dance Festival, the school’s approach to absence requests on the basis of religious observance, and the disadvantage experienced by a particular White British working class boy, the paper highlights tensions and problematics associated with issues of equity, schooling and group identity. The paper makes a theoretical contribution to debates in this area. Further illustrating the limitations of distributive understandings of equity that begin with group identity politics and fail to consider matters of context in struggles against cultural oppressions, it examines the possibilities of an equity approach that instead begins with a focus on overcoming these relations of oppression.

Synthesis and spectroscopic properties of seven new dibutyltin(IV) compounds of 2-{(E)-4-hydroxy-3-[(E)-4-(aryl)iminomethyl]phenyldiazenyl}benzoic acids (L(n)HH'; n=2-8) with general formula {[Bu2Sn(L(n)H)]2O}2 (1-7) are reported. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and by UV-Visible, fluorescence, IR, (1)H, (13)C and (119)Sn NMR spectroscopies. Solid state structures of dibutyltin(IV) compounds 1-3, 6 and 7 were accomplished from single crystal X-ray crystallography which reveal the common ladder-type structure with two endo- and two exo-Sn atoms. The redox properties of L(n)HH' (n=2-4, 7 and 8) and their diorganotin(IV) compounds 1-3, 6 and 7 were also investigated by cyclic voltammetry. In general, the dibutyltin(IV) derivatives exhibited significant in vitro cytotoxic potency towards A375 (melanoma) and HCT116 (colon carcinoma) cell lines as determined by several experiments, like Live and Dead assay, MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) cell viability assay, LDH (lactate dehydrogenase), cleavage of caspases and PARP (poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase), and DNA fragmentation. Dibutyltin(IV) compounds increase cell death without cytolysis and decreases membrane fluidity, without interfering with p53. Among the dibutyltin(IV) compounds, compound 6 was found to be the most potent, with an IC50 value of 78nM. A mechanism of action for tumor cell death is proposed.
