Sustainable development encompasses environmental, social and
economic considerations. As such the stakeholders include industry, government, individuals and communities. When designing or operating an industrial plant, it is Insufficient to consider only the economic viability of the facility. This paper examines the background to current sustainability awareness and presents a case study that incorporates sustainability principles in the design of an efluent treatment plant for a textile plant. The likely design of the treatment system (electro flotation followed by filtration) will do more than just meet regulatory requirements, it will maximise possible reuse of water and so minimise environmental impact of the facility.

Land use change has occurred rapidly in southwestern Victoria over the last decade and is expected to continue, albeit at a slower pace. One of these changes has been the development of 'new forests', that is industrial and farm forestry plantations and environmental plantings. Some of the challenges that these land use changes pose for water and natural resource managers are discussed. Land use change is expected to substantially reduce potential water yield in four of the region's seven drainage basins (A).

Core HIA documents, researchers and practitioners assert the significance of community participation in health impact assessment. Despite the rhetoric, there has been little critical examination of the role of community participation in HIA. Knowledge and debate regarding what constitutes community participation and how it may best be achieved is often confused and opinion is divided as to its usefulness and appropriateness for HIA. This paper does not seek to argue the merits or drawbacks of community participation; rather, the authors explore the origins and character of the current discord around public participation in HIA and provide a lexicon for moving practice and discussion forward. The authors argue that the origins of the participation problem stem from: (1) unexplored tensions within the Gothenburg consensus paper and other formative documents in the development of HIA; (2) inherent tensions arising from the dual origins of HIA, specifically Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Healthy Public Policy (HPP); and (3) a lack of rigour and clarity relating to the terminology of community participation where community participation is used as a 'catch all' phrase for every situation without critical examination. In order to move debate forward, the authors advance a model, the Typology of Public Involvement in HIA, for guiding discussion of community participation. This model comprises a set of context-specific HIA approaches with varying degrees of public involvement. The model also presents a suite of defined terms for understanding and discussing participation.

The article presents survey commentaries and analysis on Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis of biotechnology boom indicators in Singapore as of April 2006. SWOT is the process whereby the strengths and weaknesses in the internal environment are analyzed in association with the opportunities and threats arising from the external environment. The success of Singapore's biotechnology sector depends on the effectiveness and efficiency of the interface between the external and internal environments. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the industry are discussed.

There is hope! Since Al Gore disclosed the inconvenient truth, the climate has changed. The time of denial is over; the era of well-informed action and sound development is with us. Sustainability has now moved from the fringe, into the mainstream of politics, society, architecture and building practice. In this new context architectural science will contribute to two main tasks: prevent further damage to our environment, and respond to challenges invoked by climate change.
The built environment and human activity within it account for a large part of the problem. Architectural science and architectural practice are part of the solution. The ANZAScA 2007 conference focuses on the solutions architectural science has to offer toward a liveable future through the following generic themes:
progress – the evaluation and improvement of built facilities, new and existing, in terms of energy intensity, financial reward and environmental impact.
practice – the relationship between our cultural heritage, new facility design, retrofit design and its realisation
through construction.
performance – the connection between building operation targets, validation of performance, and user comfort and interaction in new and existing environments.
people – the effect of space on user behaviour, user responsibility and social wealth.
In response to this challenge, architectural science researchers including students, educators, and practitioners at ANZAScA 2007, present a broad range of research activity and concern within the built environment from global issues down to the specific actions of individuals.

We reviewed 272 bird atlases (standardised surveys intended to document the distribution of birds) from around the world. Atlases we located were conducted in 50 countries from six continents with most (82.4%) from Europe and North America. Atlases were mostly run by ornithological societies (67.1%), had amassed at least 27.9 million records of birds over an area roughly 31.4% of the land area of the Earth, and had involved at least 108 000 contributors. They had a modal data collection period of 4 years (some ran over several decades) and varied greatly in scale, covering local areas to entire continents (21 km2 – 10 390 000 km2); atlases that covered larger areas involved more observers and generated more records. Most atlases (88.3%) were constrained to particular seasons, and most of these focussed on the main local breeding period (81.0%). Spatial sampling units ranged from 0.02 km2 (2 ha) to 3092 km2 and temporal units of sampling varied from 20 minutes to several years. Little information is available on the application of data generated by atlases. We focussed on five major atlases for which information was available. We located 97 scientific publications drawing on data from these five major atlases; papers most frequently focussed on bird distribution (26.8%), ecology (20.6%) and land-use planning (17.5%). Atlas books were cited often, 7–31 times per year. Provision of data to third parties from two major atlases (one from Australia and one from Britain and Ireland) was frequent and remarkably similar. Data were requested mostly for environmental impact studies (almost half of all requests), conservation policy and planning (~20%), research (~20%) and other mapping (~13%). Despite the uses we describe, atlas data seem under-utilised.

Over the past decade, corporate responsibility (CR) has moved from the fringes of the business world to being a significant boardroom agenda. What began largely as an extension of public relations reporting where organisations disclosed basic health and safety monitoring, and environmental impact results has now grown to a wider set of governance practices premised on the philosophy of sustainability.

This paper discusses some of the developing trends in the area of assurance of CR reports, and the emerging challenges faced by the assurance providers and managers alike. The paper also explores the role of management accountants in enhancing CR reporting and its assurance practices.

Global demands on fossil fuels require the investigation of renewable and viable alternative energy supplies. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has concluded that current consumption of fossil fuels is untenable as atmospheric emissions of gases, in particular carbon dioxide (CO2), is having a significant and worsening effect on global climate change (IPCC 1992).

25% of UK CO2 emissions are generated in the housing sector (UKCCP 2000). As major providers of UK social housing, Registered Social Landlords (RSLs), indirectly make a significant contribution to UK CO2 emissions. In delivering UK Government policies, RSLs are required to meet national social and economic targets, as well as environmental targets. Clearly, social, environmental and economic issues combine in the arena of energy efficiency and social housing.

Potentially, the use of photovoltaics (PV) in social housing could assist the UK government in meeting targets in terms of affordable housing, providing "free" electricity to low income tenants, and with minimal environmental impact in urban areas. However, uptake of PV amongst RSLs in the UK has been minimal to date. This paper explores the factors that act as barriers to energy efficiency in this market.

Sustainable real estate development appears, on literal translation of both terms, to be an oxymoron - however it is a concept that the real estate profession needs to embrace knowledgably. On one hand it can be argued that real estate development is required for continued economic growth and the adoption of sustainability measures is required to mitigate climate change and global warming. Over the last few years there has been growth in the number of sustainability tools available to designers and operators of buildings. For example, in the US the LEED scheme enables designers to assess the environmental impact of their design and to benchmark the sustainability of the design against industry recognised criteria. LEED follows a similar format to the UK’s Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) introduced in 1990 and the Australian ‘GreenStar’ introduced in 2004. Even though there are an increasing number of sustainability tools available to designers, it still remains that the degree of uptake of the tools has been sporadic. This paper discusses the barriers to sustainable real estate development. Firstly it identifies the barriers to uptake and secondly it establishes the structural barriers in the market which prevent the wider uptake of tools.

In this book Dr Geoff Wescott proposes a new approach to environmental decision making. He suggests we move forward from relying solely on individual virtuous action to improve our environment. He argues that the time has come to get ʻback to basicsʼ: for governments to be decisive and courageous and make positive environmental decisions in the interests of their current and future constituents rather than continue to be locked into short term decision making at the beck and call of corporations and large political donors.

To fully consider production impacts, this thesis adopts a systems perspective and uses a biophysical model, DairyMod, to measure the interactions between system components and gauge the environmental impact of dairy farming arising from nitrogen use. Performance from the perspective of both the individual farmer and society is examined.

Ultrasonics has the potential to reduce the cost and environmental impact of textile processing. This work investigates the effects of utrasonic irradiation during wool scouring on fibre surface properties and fibre dyeing rate. A range of ultrasonic frequencies were used in the scouring bath to examine the forms of fibre cuticle damage. It was shown that ultrasonically scoured wool underwent some modifications of the fibre surface structure which resulted in a higher rate of dye uptake by the fibres, when compared with the conventionally scoured wool. The lower the ultrasonic frequency the more sever was the cuticle damage to wool during scouring, hence the higher the fibre dye uptake.

Ultrasonics has shown the potential to reduce the cost and environmental impact of textile processing. This work investigates the impact of ultrasonic scouring on fibre entanglement caused during the scouring process. Levels of fibre entanglement were quantified by measuring fibre length using OFDA4000 after carding. A significant reduction in fibre entanglement after ultrasonic scouring was observed and this was due to a reduced fibre migration in the wash bath when compared with the mechanical agitation seen in conventional scouring process. Fibre cuticle scale damage resulting from the ultrasonic irradiation may also have contributed to the reduction in fibre entanglement. A reduced level of fibre entanglement from ultrasonic wool scouring leads to a reduction in fibre breakage during carding.

Australians were recently awarded the dubious honour of building the largest homes in the world. Our new homes are now seven percent larger than those in the United States and nearly three times larger than those in the United Kingdom. At the same time, the price of an average residential property is now five times what it was 20 years ago. Although incomes have risen over the same period, they have not kept pace with rising house prices. In terms of disposable income, the cost of housing has almost doubled. While traditional housing affordability is measured in terms of house prices and incomes, a broader and more encompassing perspective also indicates that we can no longer ‘afford’ to build houses as we have done in the past. The environmental impact of modern Australian housing is significant. Australians have resisted the need for increased urban density as their capital city populations grow and new houses have been built on the outskirts of the existing cities, encroaching on the greenwedge and agricultural lands, destroying and degrading existing fauna and flora. The houses built have increased carbon emissions because of their size, embodied energy and reliance on the motor car. This paper discusses the environmental ‘affordability’ of current Australian housing and argues that this must be considered alongside traditional affordability criteria so that a more holistic approach to the issues is adopted.

The environmental impact of urbanization due to the surface impervious growing and inadequacy of urban occupation induces to a significant increase of inundation events in every urban center. Hence, this paper focuses the concept of impervious surface as an indicator of environment impact, expressed through the changing of pervious areas in impervious areas by paving cover or building occupation. It is taken as a case study 13 areas pertaining to Canoas City, Rio Grande do Sul – Metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The main goal of the methodology process is to achieve information about types of land cover for studying the association with urban impermeability level. Therefore, the manipulation of municipal digital cartographic base of Canoas City with aerial photographs, through the geoprocessing applied in geographic information system toolbox (GIS), allows this research to produce data about of urban impervious areas generation. These results could help the urban settlement planning to reduce the impervious cover and the hydrological impact in its implementation.
