The effects of animal species (AS; Angora goats, Merino sheep, mixed-grazed goats and sheep at the ratio of 1:1) and stocking rate (SR; 7.5, 10 and 12.5 animals/ha) on the liveweight, body condition score, carcass yield and mortality of goats and sheep were determined in a replicated experiment on improved annual temperate pastures in southern Australia from 1981 to 1984. The pattern of liveweight change was similar for both species with growth from pasture germination in autumn until maturation in late spring followed by weight loss. In winter, sheep grew faster than goats (65 versus 10 g/day, P < 0.05). In mixed-grazed treatments between November and December goats either grew when sheep were losing weight or goats lost less weight than sheep (P < 0.01). Both AS (P < 0.001) and SR (P < 0.001) affected liveweight of sheep and an AS SR interaction (P <  0.05) affected liveweight of goats. Mixed-grazed sheep were heavier than separately grazed sheep at all SR with a mean difference at 10 and 12.5/ha of 4.6 kg. Mixed-grazed goats at 10/ha were heavier than separately grazed goats from the end of the second year of the experiment, but at 12.5/ha, separately grazed goats maintained an advantage over mixed-grazed goats, with a 9.4-kg mean difference in December (P < 0.05). Body condition scores of goats and sheep declined with increasing SR; they were highest in late spring and were highly correlated with liveweight (r2 > 0.8). Both AS and SR affected (P < 0.001) carcass weight and GR tissue depth as a direct result of differences in liveweight. Adjusting for differences in carcass weight negated AS effects on GR tissue depth. The carcass weights of sheep and goats increased by similar amounts for each 1-kg increase in liveweight. Mortality of sheep (3.1% p.a.) was unaffected by AS or SR. An AS SR interaction indicated mortality of separately grazed goats at 12.5/ha and mixed-grazed goats at 10 and 12.5/ha were higher (P < 0.05) than all other goat (29 versus 9%) and sheep treatments, primarily because of increased susceptibility to cold stress. Disease prevalence differed between sheep and goats. Mixed grazing of Merino sheep and Angora goats produced complementary and competitive effects depending upon the SR. Goats used summer pasture better but winter pasture less well for liveweight gain than sheep. Angora goats should not be grazed alone or mixed grazed with sheep on annual temperate pastures at SR greater than that recommended for Merino sheep and the evidence indicates a lower SR will reduce risks associated with mortality.

In general, rock masses are inhomogeneous, discontinuous media composed of rock material and naturally occurring discontinuities such as joints, fractures and bedding planes. Because of these features, the strength of rock masses is notoriously difficult to assess. Nonetheless, many criteria have been proposed for estimating rock mass strength. Based on the finite element upper and lower bound limit analysis methods, this study examined two empirical yield criteria for rock masses, the Hoek-Brown failure criterion (2002) and the Douglas criterion (2002). The comparisons showed that very different results may be obtained using the same input parameters. Therefore, it is interesting to discuss the source of these differences.

During a financial crisis, investors find it convenient to hold gold (Gd) as a safe haven. But during good economic times, manufacturing firms find it convenient to stockpile platinum (Pl), palladium (Pd) and especially silver (Si), for industrial usages. We have three related objectives. First, we examine the nature of cross-market interactions among the convenience yields (cyit) of {Gd, Pl, Pd, Si}, which are implied from cost-of-carry relations. Second, we test if the more influential cyit of certain precious metals are also affecting the return, volatility and/or volume dynamics of other precious metals. Third, we analyze if the cyit of gold is enhanced (diluted) during (after) the Asian and Global financial crises. We find, consistent with our propositions, that during crisis period, gold’s cyit provides incremental information to the volatility series of {Gd, Pl, Pd, Si}. But during good economic times, it is silver’s cyit that has the most influence on the return series across {Gd, Pl, Pd, Si}. This is not surprising given that Si has the largest proportion of industrial usage among the four metals.

Mercury (Hg) exposure is ubiquitous in modern society via vaccines, fish/crustacea, dental amalgam, food, water, and the atmosphere. This article examines Hg exposure in the context of primary exposure to pregnant women and secondary exposure experienced by their unborn babies. Babies in utero are particularly at risk of higher Hg exposure than adults (on a dose/weight basis through maternal Hg transfer via the placenta), and are more susceptible to adverse effects from mercury and its biologically active compounds. It is, therefore, critical that regulatory advisories around maximum safe Hg exposures account for pregnant women and secondary exposure that children in utero experience. This study focused on standardized embryonic and fetal Hg exposures via primary exposure to the pregnant mother of two common Hg sources (dietary fish and parenteral vaccines). Data demonstrated that Hg exposures, particularly during the first trimester of pregnancy, at well-established dose/weight ratios produced severe damage to humans including death. In light of research suggestive of a mercuric risk factor for childhood conditions such as tic disorders, cerebral palsy, and autism, it is essential that Hg advisories account for secondary prenatal human exposures.

To examine the effects of tea tree oil on rubber latex yield and the resulting latex physiological parameters of rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis),clean water and 20%,40%,60%,80% and 100% of tea tree oil were applied on the tapping cut of rubber trees. The data were analyzed by Duncan test and its results showed that when compared to clean water (ck),80% and 100% of tea tree oil stimulation significantly promoted rubber latex yield(P<0.05). In addition,the latex physiological parameters changed with the sucrose content(P<0.01),magnesium ion content (P<0.01) and inorganic phosphorus content (P<0.01) of latex significantly increasing and thiol content significantly deceasing (P<0.01). The effect of tea tree oil treatments on rubber yield was similar to the impact of 0.5% ethrel stimulation. However,compared to ethrel stimulation,100% tea tree oil treatment significantly increased dry rubber and sucrose contents (P<0.01) and decreased thiol content (P<0.01). Thus,tea tree oil treatment involved different latex yield promotion mechanisms than that of ethrel stimulation.

In this work, a series of aging treatments has been conducted on AA6111 alloy samples for various times at ambient temperature (so-called natural aging) and at temperatures between 60 and 180 °C (artificially aged). The time at artificial ageing was chosen such that samples with approximately the same yield stress were produced. The microstructures of these alloy samples have been carefully characterized using atom probe tomography together with advanced cluster-finding techniques in order to obtain quantitative information about the changes in distribution of both the solute clusters and early-stage precipitates that are formed. The size distribution of clusters has been mapped onto the glide plane and then the stress necessary for a dislocation to pass through the range of obstacles has been estimated using an areal glide model where the dislocation–obstacle interaction strength has been assumed to be related to the obstacle size on the glide plane. It is demonstrated that the contribution of cluster strengthening during artificial aging at higher temperatures is dominated by the high number density of small clusters (Guinier radius <1 nm), whereas the situation during room temperature natural aging is more complex.

SU-8 negative photoresist has been extensively employed in the fabrication of microfluidics and microelectromechanical systems. This is due to its advantages including ease of fabrication using limited equipment, biocompatibility, excellent chemical resistance, and compatibility with silicon processing. In addition, its low Young’s modulus compared to silicon has made it an excellent choice for microcantilever structure development especially for sensing applications. This paper presents a fabrication protocol for the development of thin SU-8 microcantilevers. Factors such as baking temperatures and release methods that influence the fabrication yield of SU-8 microcantilevers are considered. The influence of the baking temperature on the deformation of the SU-8 structure is investigated using the finite element method and verified experimentally. Three release methods are studied including a dry release method using fluorocarbon film, and two wet release methods using OmniCoat sacrificial layer and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) sacrificial layer. The wet release method using PMMA sacrificial layer produced the highest yield. An aptasensor is formed using the SU-8 microcantilever, and its deflection measured for thrombin detection.
