Metal oxide chemiresistors (MOCs) with a low optimal operating temperature, high sensitivity and fast response/recovery are highly promising for various applications, but remain challenging to realize. Herein, we demonstrate that SnO2 nanofibers after being co-doped with Cu2+ and Au show considerably enhanced sensing performances at an unexpectedly decreased operating temperature. A synergistic effect occurs when the two dopants are introduced together. Co-doping may form a novel strategy to the development of ultrasensitive MOCs working at a low optimal temperature. Extruded Mg-Zn-RE alloys have been shown to exhibit excellent combinations of yield strength and ductility, but it is not completely clear how adding rare earth metals to Mg-Zn alters the microstructure and affects the mechanical properties. Microstructural changes and the resulting mechanical properties from changes in composition and extrusion temperature have been investigated for Mg-. x Zn-. y RE (. x=2.5 and 5. wt.%, y=0 and 1. wt. %, and RE=Gd and Y) alloys. Adding RE to Mg-Zn increased the strength and reduced the ductility, while increasing the zinc concentration in the Mg-Zn-RE alloys had the reverse effect.

Carbon coated LiFe0·4Mn0·6PO4 (LiFe0·4Mn0·6PO4/C) was synthesised using high energy ball milling and annealing processes. The starting materials of Li2C2O4, FeC2O4.2H2O, MnC2O4.2H2O, NH4H2PO4 were firstly milled for 40 h, and followed by further milling for 5 h after adding glucose solution. The milled sample was heated at different temperatures (550, 600, 650 and 700°C) for 10 h to produce LiFe0·4Mn0·6PO4/C composites. The structure and morphology of the samples were investigated using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and high resolution electron microscopy. The phase of samples annealed at 550 and 600°C mainly consists of olivine type LiFePO4, but a small amount of Fe2P impurity phase is formed in the samples annealed at 650 and 700°C. Electrochemical analysis results show that LiFe0·4Mn0·6PO4/C synthesised at 600°C exhibits the best performance with the initial discharge capacity of 128 mAh g-1 at 0·1 C, and 109 mAh g-1 at 1 C after 500 cycles. The LiFe0·4Mn0·6PO4/C exhibits excellent electrochemical properties for high energy density lithium ion batteries.

Mg alloys are attractive candidate materials for biodegradable stents. However, there are few commercially available Mg-based stents in clinical use because Mg alloys generally undergo rapid localized corrosion in the body. In this study, we report a new surface coating for Mg alloy AZ31 based on a low-toxicity ionic liquid (IL), tributyl(methyl)phosphonium diphenyl phosphate (P1,4,4,4 dpp), to control its corrosion rate. Emphasis is placed on the effect of treatment temperature. We showed that enhancing the treatment temperature provided remarkable improvements in the performances of both corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Increasing treatment temperature resulted in a thicker (although still nanometer scale) and more homogeneous IL film on the surface. Scanning electron microscopy and optical profilometry observations showed that there were many large, deep pits formed on the surface of bare AZ31 after 2 h of immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF). The IL coating (particularly when formed at 100 °C for 1 h) significantly suppressed the formation of these pits on the surface, making corrosion occur more uniformly. The P1,4,4,4 dpp IL film formed at 100 °C was more hydrophilic than the bare AZ31 surface, which was believed to be beneficial for avoiding the deposition of the proteins and cells on the surface and therefore improving the biocompatibility of AZ31 in blood. The interaction mechanism between this IL and AZ31 was also investigated using ATR-FTIR, which showed that both anion and cation of this IL were present in the film, and there was a chemical interaction between dpp(-) anion and the surface of AZ31 during the film formation.

Man made alterations have resulted in higher air temperatures in cities, compared to their surrounding rural areas. There are many attempts to modify the urban design elements to ameliorate urban heat island effect. One among them is the concept of green roofs. There is a potential to incorporate vegetation to the large roof area of the buildings. Several studies investigated the effect of micro and macro scale implementation of green roofs. Most of these studies examined the impact of green roofs on the air temperature variation at the roof level, whereas studies are lacking on the effect of green roof at the pedestrian level. Therefore, this study aims to explore the impact of green roofs on the air temperature at pedestrian level, in the central business district (CBD), using Melbourne as a case study. A generic layout of Melbourne's CBD is modelled using ENVI-met 3.1 BETA 4. A number of different scenarios with different green roof coverages and building heights are examined. It was found that green roofs did not have significant impact on the temperatures at pedestrian level.

The effects of pyrrole, anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid (AQSA) and iron(III) chloride (FeCl3) concentrations, reaction time and temperature on the electrical conductivity of polypyrrole (PPy) - coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics were investigated. With an increase in both the AQSA and FeCl3 concentrations, resistivity decreased to a point beyond which higher concentrations led to increased surface resistivity. Erosion of the polymer coating, in dynamic synthesis from continual abrasion, manifested as an exponential increase in the resistance of the coated textile substrate. This was not encountered in static synthesis conditions. Temperature affected the degree of surface and bulk polymerisation. The effect of polymerisation temperature on conductivity was negligible. Conductive polymer coating on textiles through chemical polymerisation enabled a smooth coherent film to encase individual fibres, which did not affect the tactile properties of the host substrate. The optimum FeCl3/pyrrole and AQSA FeCl3/pyrrole molar ratios were found to be 2.22 and 0.40 respectively.

A magnesium alloy of eutectic composition (33 wt-'%Al) was directionally solidified in mild steel tubes at two growth rates, 32 and 580 mum s(-1,) in a temperature gradient between 10 and 20 K mm(-1). After directional solidification, the composition of each specimen varied dramatically, from 32'%Al in the region that had remained solid to 18%Al (32 mum s(-1) specimen) and 13%Al (580 mum s(-1) specimen) at the plane that had been quenched from the eutectic temperature. As the aluminium content decreased, the microstructure contained an increasing volume fraction of primary magnesium dendrites and the eutectic morphology gradually changed from lamellar to partially divorced. The reduction in aluminium content was caused by the growth of an Al-Fe phase ahead of the Mg-Al growth front. Most of the growth of the Al-Fe phase occurred during the remelting period before directional solidification. The thickness of the Al-Fe phase increased with increased temperature and time of contact with the molten Mg-Al alloy. (C) 2003 Maney Publishing.

The influence of grain size on the deformation of extruded Mg-3Al-1Zn tested in tension at temperatures between room temperature and 300°C is investigated. The results enable estimation of the deformation conditions for the transition from slip to twinning dominated flow and for the initiation and completion of dynamic recrystallization. A map illustrating these critical parameters is constructed and it is shown that the operating conditions of the common wrought processes straddle key transitions in microstructure behaviour.

A C–Mn–V steel was used to study ultrafine ferrite formation (1–3 μm) through dynamic strain-induced transformation (DSIT) using hot torsion experiments. A systematic study determined the critical strain for the start of DSIT (C,DSIT), although this may not lead to a fully ultrafine microstructure. Therefore, the strain to produce an ultrafine ferrite (UFF) as final microstructure (C,UFF) during deformation was also determined. In addition, the effect of thermomechanical parameters such as deformation temperature, prior austenite grain size, strain rate and cooling rate on C,DSIT and C,UFF has been evaluated. DSIT ferrite nucleated on prior austenite grain boundaries at an early stage of straining followed by intragranular nucleation at higher strains. The prior austenite grain size affected the distribution of DSIT ferrite nucleation sites at an early stage of transformation and the subsequent coarsening behaviour of the grain boundary and intragranular ferrite grains during post-deformation cooling. Also, C,DSIT and C,UFF increased with an increase in the prior austenite grain size and deformation temperature. The post-deformation cooling had a strong effect not only on C,UFF but also the UFF microstructure (i.e. final ferrite grain size and second phase characteristics).

Introduction: The beliefs and opinions of individual nurses are key factors in clinical decisions. Emergency nurses’ clinical decisions related to paediatric fever establish emergency department norms, provide role-modelling for both peers and parents, underpin clinical management of febrile children, and influence fever management advice given to parents. Aim: This study aimed to examine: (i) the opinions of emergency nurses regarding paediatric fever, and (ii) the effect of an evidence-based education program on the opinions of emergency nurses regarding paediatric fever. Method: This study used a prospective pre-test/post-test design. The primary outcome measure was emergency nurses’ opinions measured using the ‘General Opinions about Fever Management in Children’ survey. The intervention for the study was two tutorials. Pre-test data was collected in June 2005 and post-test data was collected during August 2005. Results: Thirty-one emergency nurses participated in the study. There were a number of positive changes in emergency nurses’ opinions regarding paediatric fever as a function of an evidence-based educational intervention. Major domains of change were relationship between temperature and illness severity/risk of harm, use and effects of antipyretic medication and febrile convulsions.  Conclusion: Emergency nurses are an important source of information for parents leaving the emergency department with a febrile child. Opinions can be a major influence in nurses’ clinical decisions and many fever  management strategies used by health care professionals are reflective of individual beliefs rather than the best available evidence. The results of this study showed a number of positive changes in emergency nurses’ opinions regarding paediatric fever as a function of an evidence-based educational intervention.

A C-Mn-Nb-Ti steel was deformed by hot torsion to study ultrafine ferrite formation through dynamic strain-induced transformation (DSIT) in conjunction with air cooling. A systematic study was carried out first to evaluate the effect of deformation temperature and prior austenite grain size on the critical strain for ultrafine ferrite formation (ε C,UFF) through single-pass deformation. Then, multiple deformations in the nonrecrystallization region were used to study the effect of thermomechanical parameters (i.e., strain, deformation temperature, etc.) on ε C,UFF. The multiple deformations in the nonrecrystallization region significantly reduced ε C,UFF, although the total equivalent strain for a given thermomechanical condition was higher than that required in single-pass deformation. The current study on a Ni-30Fe austenitic model alloy revealed that laminar microband structures were the key intragranular defects in the austenite for nucleation of ferrite during the hot torsion test. The microbands were refined and overall misorientation angle distribution increased with a decrease in the deformation temperature for a given thermomechanical processing condition. For nonisothermal multipass deformation, there was some contribution to the formation of high-angle microband boundaries from strains at higher temperature, although the strains were not completely additive.

A rapid method was used to study the effect of carbon content on the kinetics of post-deformation softening, t50, in Nb-steels. The hot deformation behaviour of austenite was not affected by carbon. However, the t50 was influenced by the carbon with different effects in different temperature regimes. At deformation temperatures above the non-recrystallization temperature, Tnr, carbon produced a small change in the softening behaviour. However, the t50 was significantly retarded with increasing carbon content at deformation temperatures lower than Tnr, due to Nb(C,N) precipitates.
