Pronounced and stable pseudocapacitance has been found in flowerlike FeTiO3 nanostructures that were synthesized from ball-milled ilmenite (natural mineral) under mild hydrothermal conditions. Each nanoflower is composed of many thin petals with a thickness of 5–20 nm and a width of 100–200 nm. The formation of these flowerlike nanostructures is attributed to a dissolution–precipitation mechanism involving an intermediate sodium-containing phase. Electrochemical properties of the obtained FeTiO3 nanostructures are evaluated in aqueous electrolytes. The capacitance of 122 ± 14.5 F/g is measured in 1 M KOH aqueous electrolyte at the current rate of 500 mA/g, and 50 ± 6 F/g is retained at 5 A/g. The material has good long-term cycling stability. According to our data, FeTiO3 nanostructures show functionality as an electrode material for supercapacitors.

A novel hierarchical MnO2/carbon strip (MnO2/C) microsphere is synthesized via galvanostatic charge-discharge of a MnO@C matrix precursor where the carbon is from a low-cost citric acid. This hierarchical structure is composed of manganese oxides nanoflakes and inlaid carbon strips. The ultrathin nanoflakes assemble to form porous microspheres with a rippled surface superstructure. Due to its improved conductivity and remarkable increased phase contact area, this novel structure exhibits an excellent electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of 485.6 F g -1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 and an area capacitance as high as 4.23 F cm-2 at a mass loading of 8.7 mg cm-2. It also shows an excellent cycling stability with 88.9% capacity retention after 1000 cycles. It is speculated that the present low-cost novel hierarchical porous microspheres can serve as a promising electrode material for pseudocapacitors. © 2014 American Chemical Society.

h-In2O3/carbon nanocomposites were obtained via a facile ball milling process from a mixture of h-In2O3 nanoparticles and Super P carbon. Compared to pure h-In2O3 nanoparticles, the nanocomposites exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 1360 mAh g-1, a stable reversible capacity of 867 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles as well as a high coulombic efficiency of 99%. The superior lithium-ion battery performance can be attributed to the specific structure of h-In2O3 and the uniform and continuous nano-carbon coating layers. The nano-carbon coating could protect the inner active materials from fragmentation and increase the electronic conductivity. This study not only provides a promising electrode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries, but also further demonstrates a straightforward, effective and environmental friendly process for synthesizing nanocomposites. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

A number of transition metal nitrides and oxynitrides, which are actively investigated today as electrode materials in a wide range of energy conversion and storage devices, possess an oxide layer on the surface. Upon exposure to ambient air, properties of this layer progressively change in the process known as "ageing". Since a number of electrochemical processes involve the surface or sub-surface layers of the active electrode compounds only, ageing could have a significant effect on the overall performance of energy conversion and storage devices. In this work, the influence of the ageing of tungsten and molybdenum oxynitrides on their electrochemical properties in supercapacitors is explored for the first time. Samples are synthesised by the temperature-programmed reduction in NH3 and are treated with different gases prior to exposure to air in order to evaluate the role of passivation in the ageing process. After the synthesis, products are subjected to controlled ageing and are characterised by low temperature nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Capacitive properties of the compounds are evaluated by performing cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge and discharge measurements in the 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte. © 2014 the Partner Organisations.

Uniform hydrangea-like multi-scale carbon hollow submicron spheres (HCSSg) are fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method using glucose as carbon source and fibrous silicon dioxides spheres as shape guide. Structure characterization suggests that petal-like partially graphitized carbon nanosheets with the thickness of about 10 nm arranged in three dimensions (3D) to form the hydrangea-like hollow spheres (size ranging from 250 to 500 nm) with mesoporous channels, which can be conducive to be a high specific surface area (934 m2 g-1) and bulk density (0.87 cm g-3), hierarchical pores structure with good conductivity. As a result, the HCSSg has been demonstrated to be a supercapacitor electrode material with high gravimetric (386 F g-1 at 0.2 A g-1) and outstanding volumetric (335 F cm-3) capacitance, good rate capability and cycling stability with 94% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles in aqueous electrolytes, thus suggesting its application potential.

The air electrode, which reduces oxygen (O2), is a critical component in energy generation and storage applications such as fuel cells and metal/air batteries. The highest current densities are achieved with platinum (Pt), but in addition to its cost and scarcity, Pt particles in composite electrodes tend to be inactivated by contact with carbon monoxide (CO) or by agglomeration. We describe an air electrode based on a porous material coated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), which acts as an O2 reduction catalyst. Continuous operation for 1500 hours was demonstrated without material degradation or deterioration in performance. O2 conversion rates were comparable with those of Pt-catalyzed electrodes of the same geometry, and the electrode was not sensitive to CO. Operation was demonstrated as an air electrode and as a dissolved O2 electrode in aqueous solution.

Tailoring the nanostructures of electrode materials is an effective way to enhance their electrochemical performance for energy storage. Herein, an ice-templating "bricks-and-mortar" assembly approach is reported to make ribbon-like V2O5 nanoparticles and CNTs integrated into a two-dimensional (2D) porous sheet-like V2O5-CNT nanocomposite. The obtained sheet-like V2O5-CNT nanocomposite possesses unique structural characteristics, including a hierarchical porous structure, 2D morphology, large specific surface area and internal conducting networks, which lead to superior electrochemical performances in terms of long-term cyclability and significantly enhanced rate capability when used as a cathode material for LIBs. The sheet-like V2O5-CNT nanocomposite can charge/discharge at high rates of 5C, 10C and 20C, with discharge capacities of approximately 240 mA h g-1, 180 mA h g-1, and 160 mA h g-1, respectively. It also retains 71% of the initial discharge capacity after 300 cycles at a high rate of 5C, with only 0.097% capacity loss per cycle. The rate capability and cycling performance of the sheet-like V2O5-CNT nanocomposite are significantly better than those of commercial V2O5 and most of the reported V2O5 nanocomposite.

Developing synthetic methods for graphene based cathode materials, with low cost and in an environmentally friendly way, is necessary for industrial production. Although the precursor of graphene is abundant on the earth, the most common precursor of graphene is graphene oxide (GO), and it needs many steps and reagents for transformation to graphite. The traditional approach for the synthesis of GO needs many chemicals, thus leading to a high cost for production and potentially great amounts of damage to the environment. In this study, we develop a simple wet ball-milling method to construct a V2O5/graphene hybrid structure in which nanometre-sized V2O5 particles/aggregates are well embedded and uniformly dispersed into the crumpled and flexible graphene sheets generated by in situ conversion of bulk graphite. The combination of V2O5 nanoparticles/aggregates and in situ graphene leads the hybrid to exhibit a markedly enhanced discharge capacity, excellent rate capability, and good cycling stability. This study suggests that nanostructured metal oxide electrodes integrated with graphene can address the poor cycling issues of electrode materials that suffer from low electronic and ionic conductivities. This simple wet ball-milling method can potentially be used to prepare various graphene based hybrid electrodes for large scale energy storage applications.

Carbon nanofibers with inter-bonded fibrous structure show high supercapacitor performance when being used as electrode materials. Their preparation is highly desirable from cellulose through a pyrolysis technique, because cellulose is an abundant, low cost natural material and its carbonization does not emit toxic substance. However, interconnected carbon nanofibers prepared from electrospun cellulose nanofibers and their capacitive behaviors have not been reported in the research literature. Here we report a facile one-step strategy to prepare inter-bonded carbon nanofibers from partially hydrolyzed cellulose acetate nanofibers, for making high-performance supercapacitors as electrode materials. The inter-fiber connection shows considerable improvement in electrode electrochemical performances. The supercapacitor electrode has a specific capacitance of ∼241.4 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 current density. It maintains high cycling stability (negligible 0.1% capacitance reduction after 10,000 cycles) with a maximum power density of ∼84.1 kW kg-1. They may find applications in the development of efficient supercapacitor electrodes for energy storage applications.
