This paper examines the impact of tourism on welfare in a cash-in-advance economy. As a result of the expansion in tourism, the price of the non-traded good increases. This gives rise to a terms-of-trade improvement. However, the cash-in-advance constraint causes a distortion in consumption. For tourism demand, where the gain from the terms-of-trade improvement dominates (does not dominate) the loss from the consumption distortion, tourism is welfare-improving (welfare-reducing). A similar condition for welfare improvement (deterioration) holds for a model of capital inflow and endogenised tourism.

Modern helmet-mounted night vision devices, such as the Thales TopOwl helmet, project imagery from intensifiers mounted on the sides of the helmet onto the helmet faceplate. This produces a situation of hyperstereopsis in which binocular disparities are magnified. This has the potential to distort the perception of slope in depth (an important cue to landing), because the slope cue provided by binocular disparity conflicts with veridical cues to slope, such as texture gradients and motion parallax. In the experiments, eight observers viewed sparse and dense textured surfaces tilted in depth under three viewing conditions: normal stereo hyper-stereo (4 times magnification), and hypostereo (1 / 4 magnification). The surfaces were either stationary, or rotated slowly around a central vertical axis. Stimuli were projected at 6 metres to minimise conflict between accommodation and convergence, and stereo viewing was provided by a Z-screen and passive polarised glasses. Observers matched perceived visual slope using a small tilt table set by hand. We found that slope estimates were distorted by hyperstereopsis, but to a much lesser degree than predicted by disparity magnification. The distortion was almost completely eliminated when motion parallax was present.

The current study was conducted to investigate the relationships between body size estimations and disordered eating symptomatology. The method of constant stimuli was used to derive three measures of self-perceived body size in 93 women: (1) accuracy of body size estimations (body image distortion); (2) sensitivity in discriminating body size within blocks of trials (body image sensitivity); and (3) variability in making body size estimations between blocks of trials (body image variability). Participants also completed measures of disordered eating. Although body image distortion correlated with dietary restraint and eating concern, body image variability accounted for additional variance in these variables, as well as variance in binge eating. The relationships involving body image variability were found to be mediated by body dissatisfaction and internalization of the thin ideal. Together, these results are consistent with the proposition that body image variability is a significant factor in disordered eating.

A large part of the work presented in this thesis describes the development and use of a novel electrochemical detector designed to allow the electrochemical characterisation of compounds in flowing solution by means of cyclic voltammetry. The detector was microprocessor controlled, which provides digital generation of the potential waveform and collection of data for subsequent analysis. Microdisk working electrodes are employed to permit both thermodynamic and kinetically controlled processes to be studied under steady-state conditions in flowing solutions without the distortion or hysteresis normally encountered with larger sized electrodes. The effect of electrode size, potential scan rate, and solution flow rate are studied extensively with the oxidation of ferrocene used as an example of a thermodynamically controlled process and a series of catecholamines as examples of a kinetically controlled process. The performance of the detector was best demonstrated when used as a HPLC post-column detector. The 3-dimensional chromatovoltammograms obtained allow on-line characterisation of each fraction as it elutes from the column. The rest of the work presented in this thesis involves the study of the oxidative degradation pathway of dithranol. The oxidative pathway was shown to involve a complex free radical mechanism, dependent on the presence of both oxygen and, in particular light. The pathway is further complicated by the fact that dithranol may exist in either a keto or enol form, the enol being most susceptible to oxidation. A likely mechanism is proposed from studies performed with cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis, then defined by subsequent kinetic studies.

The direction and speed of motion of a one-dimensional (1-D) stimulus, such as a grating, presented within a circular aperture is ambiguous. This ambiguity, referred to as the Aperture Problem (Fennema & Thompson, 1979) results from (i) the inability to detect motion parallel to grating orientation, and (ii) the occlusion of border information, such as the ‘ends’ of the grating, by the surface forming the aperture, Adelson and Movshon's (1982) intcrsection-of-constraints (IOC) model of motion perception describes a two-stage method of disambiguating the motion of 1-D moving stimuli (e.g., gratings) to produce unambiguous motion of two-dimensional (2-D) objects (e.g., plaid patterns) made up of several 1-D components. Specifically, in the IOC model ambiguous 1-D motions extracted by Stage 1 component-selective mechanisms are integrated by Stage 2 pattern-selective mechanisms to produce unambiguous 2-D motion signals. ‘Integration’ in the context of the IOC model involves determining the single motion vector (i.e., combination of direction and speed) which is consistent with the I-D components of a 2-D object. Since the IOC model assumes that 2-D objects undergo pure translation (i.e., without distortion, rotation, etc.), the motion vector consistent with all 1-D components describes the motion of the 2-D object itself. Adelson and Movshon (1982) propose that neural implementation of the computation underlying the IOC model is reflected in the perception of coherent 2-D plaid motion reported when two separately-moving ‘component’ gratings are superimposed. Using these plaid patterns the present thesis assesses the IOC model in terms of its ability to account for the perception of 2-D motion in a variety of circumstances. In the first series of experiments it is argued that the unambiguous motion perceived for a single grating presented within a rectangular aperture (i.e., the Barberpole illusion; Wallach, 1976) reflects application of the IOC computation to the moving 1-D grating and the stationary boundary of the aperture. While contrary to the assumption which underlies the IOC model (viz., that integration occurs between moving 1-D stimuli), evidence consistent with the involvement of the IOC computation in mediating the Barberpole illusion (in which there is only one moving stimulus) is obtained by measuring plaid coherence as a function of aperture shape. It is found that rectangular apertures which bias perceived component motions in directions consistent with plaid direction facilitate plaid coherence, while rectangular apertures which bias perceived component motions in directions inconsistent with plaid direction disrupt plaid coherence. In the second series of experiments, perceived directions of motion of type I symmetrical, type I asymmetrical, and type II plaids are measured with the aim of investigating the deviations in plaid directions reported by Ferrera and Wilson (1990) and Yo and Wilson (1992). Perceived directions of both asymmetrical and type II plaids are shown to deviate away from lOC-predicted directions and towards mean component direction. Furthermore, the magnitude of these deviations is being proportional to the difference between lOC-predicted plaid direction and mean component direction. On the basis of these directional deviations, modification to the IOC model is proposed. In the modified IOC model it is argued that plaid perception involves (i) the activity of Stage 2 pattern-selective mechanisms (and the Stage 1 component-selective mechanisms which input into these pattern-selective mechanisms) involved in implementing the IOC computation, and (ii) component-selective mechanisms which influence plaid perception directly, and ‘extraneously’ to the IOC computation. In the third series of experiments the validity of this modified IOC model, as well as the validity of alternative one-stage models of plaid perception are assessed in relation to perceived directions of plaid-induced MAEs as a function of both plaid direction and mean component direction. It is found that plaid-induced MAEs are shifted away from directions opposite to lOC-predicted plaid direction towards the direction opposite to mean component direction. This pattern of results is taken to be consistent with the modified IOC model which predicts the activity, and adaptation both of mechanisms signalling plaid direction (via implementation of the IOC computation), and ‘extraneous-type’ component-selective mechanisms signalling component directions. Alternative one-stage models which predict the adaptation of only mechanisms signalling plaid direction (the feature-tracking model), or the adaptation only of mechanisms signalling component directions (the distribution-of-activity model), cannot account for the directions of plaid-induced MAEs reported. The ability of the modified IOC model to account for the perceived directions of (i) gratings in rectangular apertures, (ii) various types of plaid in circular apertures, and (iii) directions of plaid-induced MAEs, is interpreted as supporting the proposition that human motion perception is based on a parallel and distributed process involving Stage 2 pattern-selective mechanisms (and the Stage 1 component-selective mechanisms which input into these mechanisms) taken to implement the IOC computation, and component-selective mechanisms taken to provide an 'extraneous' direct contribution to motion perception.

We investigate a dynamic advertising model where product quality is endogenous. In the differential game between single-product firms, there exists a parameter range where the low-quality firm uses a more efficient advertising technology and earns higher profits than the rival. Moreover, we show that equilibrium qualities are the same under duopoly, multiproduct monopoly, and social planning, the only distortion being concerned with the output levels.

Despite Žižek's polemical attacks on Hannah Arendt, their writings on totalitarianism share significant similarities. Žižek's Lacanian analysis of the distortion of the elementary symbolic coordinates of human sociability in Stalinism refines Arendt's controversial account of the role of ideologies in totalitarian regimes; it brings to the political field an account of subjectivity and its relation to language derived from (Lacanian) psychoanalysis. Reading Žižek's analyses of Stalinist and fascist ideologies preserves – by psychoanalytically reframing – the radical philosophical register of Arendt's understanding of twentieth-century totalitarian regimes as attempting the systematic destruction of ‘world’ – the in-between public space of shared political human experience and action. Žižek's psychoanalytic framework allows us to address the tendency in Arendt's Origins of Totalitarianism to conflate fascism and Stalinism and also to question the motives for these regimes’ political and ontological violences.

Submicrometer-scale periodic structures consisting of parallel grooves were prepared on azobenzene-containing multiarm star polymer films by laser interference. The wetting characteristics on the patterned surfaces were studied by contact angle measurements. Macroscopic distortion of water drops was found on such small-scale surface structures, and the contact angles measured from the direction parallel to the grooves were larger than those measured from the perpendicular direction. A thermodynamic model was developed to calculate the change in the surface free energy as a function of the instantaneous contact angle when the three-phase contact line (TPCL) moves along the two orthogonal directions. It was found that the fluctuations, i.e., energy barriers, on the energy versus contact angle curves are crucial to the analysis of wetting anisotropy and contact angle hysteresis. The calculated advancing and receding contact angles from the energy versus contact angle curves were in good agreement with those measured experimentally. Furthermore, with the groove depth increasing, both the degree of wetting anisotropy and the contact angle hysteresis perpendicular to the grooves increased as a result of the increase in the energy barrier. The theoretical critical value of the groove depth, above which the anisotropic wetting appears, was determined to be 16 nm for the grooved surface with a wavelength of 396 nm. On the other hand, the effect of the groove wavelength on the contact angle hysteresis perpendicular to the grooves was also interpreted on the basis of the thermodynamic model. That is, with the wavelength decreasing, the contact angle hysteresis increased due to the increase in the number of energy barriers. These results may provide theoretical evidence for the design and application of anisotropic wetting surface.

A family of simple, displacement-based and shear-flexible triangular and quadrilateral flat plate/shell elements for linear and geometrically nonlinear analysis of thin to moderately thick laminate composite plates are introduced and summarized in this paper.

The developed elements are based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and von-Karman’s large deflection theory, and total Lagrangian approach is employed to formulate the element for geometrically nonlinear analysis. The deflection and rotation functions of the element boundary are obtained from Timoshenko’s laminated composite beam functions, thus convergence can be ensured theoretically for very thin laminates and shear-locking problem is avoided naturally.

The flat triangular plate/shell element is of 3-node, 18-degree-of-freedom, and the plane displacement interpolation functions of the Allman’s triangular membrane element with drilling degrees of freedom are taken as the in-plane displacements of the element. The flat quadrilateral plate/shell element is of 4-node, 24-degree-of-freedom, and the linear displacement interpolation functions of a quadrilateral plane element with drilling degrees of freedom are taken as the in-plane displacements.

The developed elements are simple in formulation, free from shear-locking, and include conventional engineering degrees of freedom. Numerical examples demonstrate that the elements are convergent, not sensitive to mesh distortion, accurate and efficient for linear and geometric nonlinear analysis of thin to moderately thick laminates.

Based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and Timoshenko's laminated composite beam functions, a simple displacement-based 4-node, 24-dof quadrilateral laminated plate element is proposed in this paper for linear analysis of thin to moderately thick laminates. The deflection and rotation functions of the element boundary are obtained from the Timoshenko's laminated composite beam functions, hence convergence to the thin plate solution can be achieved theoretically and shear-locking problem is avoided naturally. The in-plane displacement functions of a quadrilateral plane element with drilling degrees of freedom are taken as the in-plane displacements of the proposed quadrilateral element. Some numerical examples of linear analysis of composite laminated plates are calculated, and the results show that the proposed element is convergent, shear-locking free, efficient, accurate and not sensitive to mesh distortion.

31P and 19F solid state NMR have been used to study the nature of the PF6− anion in polypyrrole films at various levels of oxidation. It appears that the symmetric PF6− unit remains undistorted and unchanged throughout, suggesting that it is predominantly acting only as a counterion and not as a true ‘dopant’, since any distortion in the phosphorous environments would result at the very least in chemical shift anisotropy of the 31P nucleus. A second set of phosphorous and fluorine resonances, which are consistent with a difluoride phosphorous compound, appeared in the films. Upon electrochemical reduction of the polymer, the undistorted PF6− anion leaves the film whereas the second phosphorous species remains. Re-oxidation of the polymer reverses the processes observed during reduction.

According to dielectric spectroscopy measurements, ionic liquids (ILs) have rather modest dielectric constants that reflect contributions from distortion and electronic polarization caused by the molecular polarizability as well as the orientation polarization caused by the permanent dipole moment of the ions. To understand the relative importance of these various contributions, the electronic polarizabilities of 27 routinely used ionic liquid ions of different symmetry and size were calculated using ab initio-based methods such as HF and MP2. Using the Clausius–Mossotti equation, these polarizabilities were then used to obtain the electronic polarization contribution (εop) to the dielectric constants of six ionic liquids, [C2mim][BF4], [C2mpyr][N(CN)2], [C2mim][CF3SO3], [EtNH3][NO3], [C2mim][NTf2] and [C2mim][EtSO4]. Theoretical εop values were compared to experimental refractive indices of these ionic liquids as well as to those of traditional molecular solvents such as water, tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and formamide. The dipole moments of the ions were also calculated, and from these it is shown that the molecular reorientation component of the dielectric constants of the ionic liquids consisting of ions with small or negligible dipole moments is quite small. Thus it is concluded that a contribution from a form of “ionic polarization” must be present.

Reports on the use of radially polarised beam in gold-nanorod-facilitated nonlinear microscopy and therapy. It has been found that the use of radially polarised beam can greatly reduce the energy fluence threshold for treating cancer cells labelled with gold nanorods. The slight distortion in the polarisation properties of the radially polarised beam after propagating through double-clad photonic crystal fibres makes it promising in the application of fibre-optic based endoscopic system.

The quenching of a metal component with a channel section in a water tank is numerically simulated. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to model the multiphase flow and the heat transfer in film boiling, nucleate boiling and convective cooling processes to calculate the difference in heat transfer rate around the component and then combining with the thermal simulation and structure analysis of the component to study the effect of heat transfer rate on the distortion of the U-channel component. A model is also established to calculate the residual stress produced by quenching. The coupling fluid-thermal-structural simulation provides an insight into the deformation of the component and can be used to perform parameter analysis to reduce the distortion of the component. © 2011 Shanghai Jiaotong University and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Although dissociative symptoms have been linked with both food- and appearance-related aspects of eating disorders, the psychological mechanisms underlying these relationships remain unclear. The present study evaluated the hypothesis that the disturbances of self-identity attributed to dissociation can manifest as disturbances of body image and, in turn, undermine body-specific self-evaluations relevant to disordered eating (i.e., body comparison, body dissatisfaction, and internalization of the thin ideal). Ninety-three female university students completed self-report measures of dissociation and body-related aspects of disordered eating. In addition, the method of constant stimuli was used to experimentally derive three measures of body image disturbance: (1) accuracy of body size estimations (body image distortion), (2) ability to discriminate between different body sizes (body image sensitivity), and (3) consistency in one’s body size estimations (body image variability). The findings show that dissociation is related to symptoms of disordered eating, and that these relationships may be mediated by body image instability. Collectively, these findings support the notion that the body image attitudes and behaviours that characterize eating disorders may derive from proprioceptive deficits due to dissociation.
