A simple and sensitive HPLC method was developed to simultaneously determine CPT-11 and its major metabolite SN-38 in culture media and cell lysates. Camptothecin (CPT) was used as internal standard (I.S.). Compounds were eluted with acetonitrile–50 mM disodium hydrogen phosphate buffer containing 10 mM sodium 1-heptane-sulfonate, with the pH adjusted to 3.0 using 85% (w/v) orthophosphoric acid (27/73, v/v) by a Hyperclon ODS (C18) column (200 mm × 4.6 mm i.d.), with detection at excitation and emission wavelengths of 380 and 540 nm, respectively. The average extraction efficiencies were 96.9–108.3% for CPT-11 in culture media and 94.3–107.2% for CPT-11 in cell lysates; and 87.7–106.8% for SN-38 in culture media and 90.1–105.6% for SN-38 in cell lysates. Within- and between-day precision and accuracy varied from 0.1 to 10.3%. The limit of quantitation (precision and accuracy <20%) was 5.0 and 2.0 ng/ml for CPT-11 and 1.0 and 0.5 ng/ml for SN-38 in culture media and cell lysates, respectively. This method was successfully applied to quantitate the cellular accumulation and metabolism of CPT-11 and SN-38 in H4-II-E, a rat hepatoma cell line.

On 16 March 2007, in the matter of M v A & U [2007] QADT 8, the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal of Queensland found that a complaint of discrimination in the supply of goods and services had been made out by the complainant on two grounds: her female sex and lawful sexual activity. The decision would have been quite unremarkable except that ‘M’, as the complainant was known for the purposes of the hearing, is a woman of difference, one who had unusually arrived at her legal female state by completing the sex reassignment process now more commonly described as ‘sex affirmation’.

This article seeks to elaborate on the language and law of transsexualism used by the Tribunal. Its aim is to enhance practitioners’ understanding of the legal and social issues peculiar to those who affirm a sex opposite that first assigned to them so that those practitioners may better interpret the law to their clients. As the instant decision shows, the failure by an employer to take reasonable steps to avoid infringing the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), either on its own part or by the actions of its employees, can prove a costly business indeed.

The author offers a brief synopsis of the current medical viewpoint regarding transsexualism and reviews recent Australian legal developments in the jurisprudence. She reminds practitioners that the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld) has since been further strengthened by the inclusion of ‘gender identity’ as a protected attribute, and concludes by proposing the existence of a heightened duty on the part of practitioners to ensure business clients are aware of the full extent of their legal obligations to not discriminate against employees or clients.

This paper examines the advantages of using the World Wide Web (Web) as a resource to teach hearing primary aged children Australian Sign Language (Auslan). There is a trend towards educating signing deaf children in mainstream schools, therefore it is important to teach the hearing children sign language to enable meaningful communication and the formation of social relationships between hearing and deaf students. The authors will compare various methods of teaching sign language with the Web and further describe a selection of the available instructional material. Considerations for designing appropriate sign language teaching material for the Web are discussed particularly in the context of designing content that engages the primary school aged audience.

This paper reports on the shifts in literacy teaching and learning that occurred at a Melbourne primary school, one of twelve schools that took part in a large research project undertaken by staff at Deakin University funded by the Victorian Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs: Middle Years Literacy Research Project. The project focused on literacy teaching, learning, and assessment of students in the middle years of schooling. Through close collaboration between the researcher and teachers at the school, significant changes were made to the language and literacy program. These changes reflected current language theory and extended the school's focus on independent learning to the area of literacy. The development of more authentic ways of assessing student learning grew out of the work in the project as teachers sought assessment practices that were consistent with their philosophy of teaching and learning. With a focus on developing authentic literacy practices, teachers developed new ways of tracking and reporting student achievement.

In this sixth and final part of the anthology I will discuss major areas of concern about synchronicity from the perspectives of science, religion, archetypes, causality, meaning, and psi. For convenience, I have spread these major areas across three chapters. In this first chapter I will briefly consider the synchronicity construct from the perspective of its definitions and how it sits epistemologically in the framework of science and the everyday world. I also review the lives of Jung and Pauli, rind discuss their joint effort to integrate science and religion through the principle of synchronicity.

Engaging patients as ‘safety partners’ with health service providers to help identify and rectify preventable adverse events in health care is being increasingly accepted in the USA, Australia, and elsewhere as a promising strategy to improve patient safety outcomes. The implications of this trend for patients and families of minority cultural and language backgrounds have not, however, been comprehensively considered. In this article, attention is given to briefly exploring the notion of patient participation in health care and the problematic transposition of the concept into patient safety discourse. The importance of recognising and responding to the critical relationship between culture, language and
patient safety outcomes, and the possible benefits and risks of engaging patients of minority ethnic backgrounds in safety partnership programs are explored. It is suggested that if patient safety engagement/partnership programs are to perform well in cross-cultural health care contexts, they need to be supported by research evidence and appropriately informed by the perspectives and experiences of patients and families/nominated carers from minority cultural and language backgrounds. They also need to be appropriately supported by culturally competent policies and practices across the entire health care system. The importance of robust internationally comparative research on this issue is highlighted.

Our thoughts are in one language, and mathematical results are expressed in a language foreign to the way we think. Mathematics is a unique foreign language with all the components of a language; it has its own grammar, vocabulary, conventions, synonyms, sentence structure, and paragraph structure. Students need to learn these components to partake in a thorough discussion of how to read, write, speak and think mathematics. Beginning with the students natural language and expanding that language to include symbolism and logic is the key. Providing lessons in concrete, pictorial, written and verbal terms allows the instructor to create a translation bridge between the grammar of the mother language and the grammar of mathematics. This papers presents methods to create the translation bridge for students so that they become articulate members of the mathematics community. The students "mother" language, expanded to include the symbols of mathematics and logic, is the the key to both the learning of mathematics and its effective application to problem situations. The use of appropriate language is the key to making mathematics understandable.

This paper explores the challenges of espousing a critical pedagogy within the managerial climate that presently shapes teacher education. It argues that current discourses of professionalism are incommensurate with a view of literacy as social practice and that they disregard complex semiotic ecologies in which both school and university students operate. Graduate teachers are constructed as the ‘providers’ of decontextualised literacy skills to school students whose existing communication networks are ignored. Rejecting this narrow view of professional practice, we draw on activity theory to analyse the social configuration of tertiary students’ identities and the textual resources that mediate their professional learning. This kind of research is needed to reveal the contradictions within and between activity systems in which tertiary students participate as well as to construct possible solutions to the contradictions identified.
