The thesis focusses on improving the material behaviour models used in vehicle crash simulations by identifying the mechanical properties most important to crash events, reformulating the material models used in crash simulations, and developing new tests to obtain crash-relevant material.

Parametric modelling, commonly used in the automotive and aerospace industries, has recently been adopted in the architecture and construction fields. The ability to design small repeatable components and apply them to a larger governing surface geometry is one area of parametric modelling that has great design potential. This two level modelling control, of component and overall surface, can allow designers to explore new types of form generation subject to parametric constraints. This paper reports on the design to fabrication process using repeatable components over a governing or carrier surface. The paper reports on our study of the requirements and possible solutions for successfully controlling a repeatable element, known as a Representative Volumetric Element (RVE), using geometric parameters of a larger governing surface geometry and material properties. This modelling process, coupled with Rapid
Manufacturing (RM) and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines has the potential to significantly reduce the interface between design and fabrication.

Compared with research on the role of student engagement with expert representations in learning science, investigation of the use and theoretical justification of student-generated representations to learn science is less common. In this paper, we present a framework that aims to integrate three perspectives to explain how and why representational construction supports learning in science. The first or semiotic perspective focuses on student use of particular features of symbolic and material tools to make meanings in science. The second or epistemic perspective focuses on how this representational construction relates to the broader picture of knowledge-building practices of inquiry in this disciplinary field, and the third or epistemological perspective focuses on how and what students can know through engaging in the challenge of representing causal accounts through these semiotic tools. We argue that each perspective entails productive constraints on students’ meaning-making as they construct and interpret their own representations. Our framework seeks to take into account the interplay of diverse cultural and cognitive resources students use in these meaning-making processes. We outline the basis for this framework before illustrating its explanatory value through a sequence of lessons on the topic of evaporation.

Physical models and scaled prototypes of architecture play an important role in design. They enable architects and designers to investigate the formal, functional, and material attributes of the design. Understanding digital processes of realizing scaled prototypes is a significant problem confronting design practice. This paper reports on three approaches to the translation of Gaussian surface models into scaled physical prototype models. Based on the geometry of Eladio Dieste’s Gaussian Vaults, the paper reports on the aspects encountered in the process of digital to physical construction using scaled prototypes. The primary focus of the paper is on computing the design geometry, investigating methods for preparing the geometry for fabrication and physical construction. Three different approaches in the translation from digital to physical models are investigated: rapid prototyping, two-dimensional surface models in paper and structural component models using CNC fabrication. The three approaches identify a body of knowledge in the design and prototyping of Gaussian vaults. Finally the paper discusses the digital to fabrication translation processes with regards to the characteristics, benefits and limitations of the three approaches of prototyping the ruled surface geometry of Gaussian Vaults. The results of each of three fabrication processes allowed for a better understanding of the digital to physical translation process. The use of rapid prototyping permits the production of form models that provide a representation of the physical characteristics such as size, shape and proportion of the Gaussian Vault.

INTRODUCTION: Bedside teaching is essential for helping students develop skills, reasoning and professionalism, and involves the learning triad of student, patient and clinical teacher. Although current rhetoric espouses the sharing of power, the medical workplace is imbued with power asymmetries. Power is context-specific and although previous research has explored some elements of the enactment and resistance of power within bedside teaching, this exploration has been conducted within hospital rather than general practice settings. Furthermore, previous research has employed audio-recorded rather than video-recorded observation and has therefore focused on language and para-language at the expense of non-verbal communication and human-material interaction. METHODS: A qualitative design was adopted employing video- and audio-recorded observations of seven bedside teaching encounters (BTEs), followed by short individual interviews with students, patients and clinical teachers. Thematic and discourse analyses of BTEs were conducted. RESULTS: Power is constructed by students, patients and clinical teachers throughout different BTE activities through the use of linguistic, para-linguistic and non-verbal communication. In terms of language, participants construct power through the use of questions, orders, advice, pronouns and medical/health belief talk. With reference to para-language, participants construct power through the use of interruption and laughter. In terms of non-verbal communication, participants construct power through physical positioning and the possession or control of medical materials such as the stethoscope. CONCLUSIONS: Using this paper as a trigger for discussion, we encourage students and clinical teachers to reflect critically on how their verbal and non-verbal communication constructs power in bedside teaching. Students and clinical teachers need to develop their awareness of what power is, how it can be constructed and shared, and what it means for the student-patient-doctor relationship within bedside teaching.

Reverse logistics in construction refers to the movement of products and materials from salvaged buildings to a new construction site. While there is a plethora of studies looking at various aspects of the reverse logistics chain, there is no systematic review of literature on this important subject as applied to the construction industry. Therefore, the objective of this study is to integrate the fragmented body of knowledge on reverse logistics in construction, with the aim of promoting the concept among industry stakeholders and the wider construction community. Through a qualitative meta-analysis, the study synthesises the findings of previous studies and presents some actions needed by industry stakeholders to promote this concept within the real-life context. First, the trend of research and terminology related with reverse logistics is introduced. Second, it unearths the main advantages and barriers of reverse logistics in construction while providing some suggestions to harness the advantages and mitigate these barriers. Finally, it provides a future research direction based on the review.

Implication and aggregation functions play important complementary roles in the field of fuzzy logic. Both have been intensively investigated since the early 1980s, revealing a tight relationship between them. However, the main results regarding this relationship, published by Fodor and Demirli DeBaets in the 1990s, have been poorly disseminated and are nowadays somewhat obsolete due to the subsequent advances in the field. The present paper deals with the translation of the classical logical equivalence p → q = ¬pvq, often called material implication, to the fuzzy framework, which establishes a one-to-one correspondence between implication functions and disjunctors (the class of aggregation functions that extend the Boolean disjunction to the unit interval). The construction of implication functions from disjunctors via negation functions, and vice versa, is reviewed, stressing the properties of disjunctors (respectively, implication functions) that ensure certain properties of implication functions (disjunctors).

There is a growing interest in identifying inorganic material affinity classes for peptide sequences due to the development of bionanotechnology and its wide applications. In particular, a selective model capable of learning cross-material affinity patterns can help us design peptide sequences with desired binding selectivity for one inorganic material over another. However, as a newly emerging topic, there are several distinct challenges of it that limit the performance of many existing peptide sequence classification algorithms. In this paper, we propose a novel framework to identify affinity classes for peptide sequences across inorganic materials. After enlarging our dataset by simulating peptide sequences, we use a context learning based method to obtain the vector representation of each amino acid and each peptide sequence. By analyzing the structure and affinity class of each peptide sequence, we are able to capture the semantics of amino acids and peptide sequences in a vector space. At the last step we train our classifier based on these vector features and the heuristic rules. The construction of our models gives us the potential to overcome the challenges of this task and the empirical results show the effectiveness of our models.

Round timbers are used for telecommunication and power distribution networks, jetties, piles, short span bridges etc. To assess the condition of these cylindrical shape timber structures, bulk and elementary wave theory are usually used. Even though guided wave can represents the actual wave behaviour, a great deal complexity exists to model stress wave propagation within an orthotropic media, such as timber. In this paper, timber is modelled as transversely isotropic material without compromising the accuracy to a great extent. Dispersion curves and mode shapes are used to propose an experimental set up in terms of the input frequency and bandwidth of the signal, the orientation of the sensor and the distance between the sensors in order to reduce the effect of the dispersion in the output signal. Some example based on the simulated signal is also discussed to evaluate the proposed experimental set up.
