The increasing complexity and number of digital forensic tasks required in criminal investigations demand the development of an effective and efficient testing methodology, enabling tools of similar functionalities to be compared based on their performance. Assuming that the tool tester is familiar with the underlying testing platform and has the ability to use the tools correctly, we provide a numerical solution for the lower bound on the number of testing cases needed to determine comparative capabilities of any set of digital forensic tools. We also present a case study on the performance testing of password cracking tools, which allows us to confirm that the lower bound on the number of testing runs needed is closely related to the row size of certain orthogonal arrays. We show how to reduce the number of test runs by using knowledge of the underlying system

International comparisons of construction industry performance are notoriously difficult. A recent comparative study, extensive in scope and using an innovative approach, is reviewed and questions raised regarding various aspects of the methodology adopted, the validity of the conclusions drawn and manner in which outcomes were reported. Particular areas of concern include the unequivocal statement of conclusions that are based on a small sample, and the use of data from that sample that are, in fact, no more than estimates of project performance. Attention is drawn to the limitations of the research reported and the reliability of the methods used, and the data gathered is examined.

Glycogen is a cellular energy store that is crucial for whole body energy metabolism, metabolic regulation and exercise performance. To understand glycogen structure we have purified glycogen particles from rat liver and human skeletal muscle tissues and compared their biophysical properties with those found in commercial glycogen preparations. Ultrastructural analysis of commercial liver glycogens fails to reveal the classical α-rosette structure but small irregularly shaped particles. In contrast, commercial slipper limpet glycogen consists of β-particles with similar branching and chain lengths to purified rat liver glycogen together with a tendency to form small α-particles, and suggest it should be used as a source of glycogen for all future studies requiring a substitute for mammalian liver glycogen.

We examine new research on the internationalisation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in 27 European countries. We find that, in both established market economies and in transition economies, SME international entrepreneurship is driven by internal resources and capabilities, membership in networks or clusters, favourable government policies, economy, competitive market conditions, and industry structure. We then develop a conceptual model and propositions of the drivers of European SME internationalisation. Our findings have important implications for managers in improving their firms' international market performance.

Manufacturing engineering has had to undergo drastic changes in the approach to material selection in order to meet new design challenges. In the automotive industry, researchers in their effort to reduce emissions and satisfy environmental regulations, have shifted their focus to new emerging materials such as high-strength aluminium alloys, metal matrix composites, plastics, polymers and of late, Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI). ADI is a good choice for design where the criterion is high performance at reduced weight and cost. The unique, ausferrite microstructure gives the material desirable material properties and an edge over other materials. A comparative study of ADI in terms of materials properties and machining characteristics with other materials is desirable to highlight the potential of the material. This paper focuses on a comparative assessment of material and machining characteristics of ADI for different applications. The properties under consideration are machinability, weight and cost savings and versatility. ADI has a higher strength-to-weight ratio than aluminium making it a ready alternative for material selection. In terms of machinability, there are some problems associated with machining of ADI due to its work hardening nature. This paper attempts to identify the possible potential applications of ADI, by critically reviewing specific applications such as machinability, overall economics and service.

This paper investigates the performance after privatization of institutions in Australian banking and insurance. Privatization was anticipated to improve firm performance in Australia and elsewhere, yet findings are mixed. A comparative institutional approach is taken to analyzing firm performance in the longer term which allows for further structural change. A CAMEL analysis of performance before and after privatization events is undertaken for four privatized institutions, two each from banking and insurance sectors. These are matched with private peer institutions. Privatized institutions are found to perform quite similarly to private peer institutions both before and after privatization.

This paper investigates the bending deformation of a cantilever biosensor based on a single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) and single-walled boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) due to bioparticle detection. Through 3-D modeling and simulations, the performance of the CNT and BNNT cantilever biosensors is analyzed. It is found that the BNNT cantilever has better response and sensitivity compared to the CNT counterpart. Additionally, an algorithm for an electrostatic-mechanical coupled system is developed. The cantilever (both BNNT and CNT) is modelled by accounting that a conductive polymer is deposited onto the nanotube surfaces. Two main approaches are considered for the mechanical deformation of the nanotube beam. The first one is differential surface stress produced by the binding of biomolecules onto the surface. The second one is the charge released from the biomolecular interaction. Also, different ambient conditions are considered in the study of sensitivity. Sodium Dodisyl Sulphate (SDS) provides better bending deformation than the air medium. Other parameters including length of beam, variation of beam's location, and chiralities are considered in the design. The results are in excellent agreement with the electrostatic equations that govern the deformation of cantilever.

This paper focuses on the choice of a supervised learning algorithm and possible data preprocessing in the domain of data-driven haptic simulation. This is done through a comparison of the performance of different supervised learning techniques with and without data preprocessing. The simulation of haptic interactions with deformable objects using data-driven methods has emerged as an alternative to parametric methods. The accuracy of the simulation depends on the empirical data and the learning method. Several methods were suggested in the literature and here we provide a comparison between their performance and applicability to this domain. We selected four examples to be compared: singular learning mechanism which is artificial neural networks (ANN), attribute selection followed by ANN learning process, ensemble of multiple learning techniques, and attribute selection followed by the learning ensemble. These methods performance was compared in the domain of simulating multiple interactions with a deformable object with nonlinear material behavior.

Traditional dwellings located in the hot arid zones of the Arabian regions are well known for their sensitive architectural response to the region’s climatic conditions and socio-cultural norms. The majority of these dwellings are well recognized for their courtyard arrangement and perforated fenestration system that evolved to control the harsh solar, climatic conditions without compromising the aesthetic quality of space and occupants’ wellbeing. However, the unique visual characteristics of these structures cannot be fully appreciated by assessing the visual performance of buildings in isolation from their urban context. Given the fact that much of the character of the traditional settlements of this region came from the collective visual perception of their architectural components as well as urban patterns. This paper presents a methodology that can be used to assess daylight behaviour at an architectural level as well as at an urban scale. The work examines the daylight behaviour of a well-known historic alleyway and of a courtyard house in the old city of Cairo. The variability in the visual perception and comfort for a typical pedestrian street and the occupants of the house was predicted using Radiance IES simulation modelling tool and a scaled model under an artificial sky dome. A comparative analysis between simulated results and measured values at target points was conducted and the results reveal a reasonable agreement with the simulation results. Preliminary results from the first phase of modelling were presented that give an insight into the overall visual experience in the traditional settlements in the Old City of Cairo where daylight has contributed to the place unique sense of identity.

In many businesses, including hydrocarbon industries, reducing cost is of high priority. Although hydrocarbon industries appear able to afford the expensive computing infrastructure and software packages used to process seismic data in the search for hydrocarbon traps, it is always imperative to find ways to minimize cost. Seismic processing costs can be significantly reduced by using inexpensive, open source seismic data processing packages. However, hydrocarbon industries question the processing performance capability of open source packages, claiming that their seismic functions are less integrated and provide almost no technical guarantees for one to use. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate, through a comparative analysis, that open source seismic data processing packages are capable of executing the required seismic functions on an actual industrial workload. To achieve this objective we investigate whether or not open source seismic data processing packages can be executed using the same set of seismic data through data format conversions, and whether or not they can achieve reasonable performance and speedup when executing parallel seismic functions on a HPC cluster. Among the few open source packages available on the Internet, the subjects of our study are two popular packages: Seismic UNIX (SU) and Madagascar.

We present a comparative evaluation of the state-of-art algorithms for detecting pedestrians in low frame rate and low resolution footage acquired by mobile sensors. Four approaches are compared: a) The Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HoG) approach [1]; b) A new histogram feature that is formed by the weighted sum of both the gradient magnitude and the filter responses from a set of elongated Gaussian filters [2] corresponding to the quantised orientation, called Histogram of Oriented Gradient Banks (HoGB) approach; c) The codebook based HoG feature with branch-and-bound (efficient subwindow search) algorithm [3] and; d) The codebook based HoGB approach. Results show that the HoG based detector achieves the highest performance in terms of the true positive detection, the HoGB approach has the lowest false positives whilst maintaining a comparable true positive rate to the HoG, and the codebook approaches allow computationally efficient detection.

Gene Expression Comparative Analysis allows bioinformatics researchers to discover the conserved or specific functional regulation of genes. This is achieved through comparisons between quantitative gene expression measurements obtained in different species on different platforms to address a particular biological system. Comparisons are made more difficult due to the need to map orthologous genes between species, pre-processing of data (normalization) and post-analysis (statistical and correlation analysis). In this paper we introduce a web-based software package called EXP-PAC which provides on line interfaces for database construction and query of data, and makes use of a high performance computing platform of computer clusters to run gene sequence mapping and normalization methods in parallel. Thus, EXP-PAC facilitates the integration of gene expression data for comparative analysis and the online sharing, retrieval and visualization of complex multi-specific and multi-platform gene expression results.

In this paper, the effectiveness of three different operating strategies applied to the Fuzzy ARTMAP (FAM) neural network in pattern classification tasks is analyzed and compared. Three types of FAM, namely average FAM, voting FAM, and ordered FAM, are formed for experimentation. In average FAM, a pool of the FAM networks is trained using random sequences of input patterns, and the performance metrics from multiple networks are averaged. In voting FAM, predictions from a number of FAM networks are combined using the majority-voting scheme to reach a final output. In ordered FAM, a pre-processing procedure known as the ordering algorithm is employed to identify a fixed sequence of input patterns for training the FAM network. Three medical data sets are employed to evaluate the performances of these three types of FAM. The results are analyzed and compared with those from other learning systems. Bootstrapping has also been used to analyze and quantify the results statistically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR].
