In this paper, we investigate the channel estimation problem for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communication systems with time-varying channels. The time-varying characteristic of the channels is described by the complex-exponential basis expansion model (CE-BEM). We propose a superimposed channel training algorithm to estimate the individual first-hop and second-hop time-varying channel matrices for MIMO relay systems. In particular, the estimation of the second-hop time-varying channel matrix is performed by exploiting the superimposed training sequence at the relay node, while the first-hop time-varying channel matrix is estimated through the source node training sequence and the estimated second-hop channel. To improve the performance of channel estimation, we derive the optimal structure of the source and relay training sequences that minimize the mean-squared error (MSE) of channel estimation. We also optimize the relay amplification factor that governs the power allocation between the source and relay training sequences. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed superimposed channel training algorithm for MIMO relay systems with time-varying channels outperforms the conventional two-stage channel estimation scheme.

In this paper, we investigate the channel estimation problem for two-way multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communication systems in frequency-selective fading environments. We apply the method of superimposed channel training to estimate the individual channel state information (CSI) of the first-hop and second-hop links for two-way MIMO relay systems with frequency-selective fading channels. In this algorithm, a relay training sequence is superimposed on the received signals at the relay node to assist the estimation of the second-hop channel matrices. The optimal structure of the source and relay training sequences is derived to minimize the mean-squared error (MSE) of channel estimation. Moreover, the optimal power allocation between the source and relay training sequences is derived to improve the performance of channel estimation. Numerical examples are shown to demonstrate the performance of the proposed superimposed channel training algorithm for two-way MIMO relay systems in frequency-selective fading environments.

Purpose – At present no frameworks exist for services marketers to incorporate social media (SM) within marketing communications planning. The majority of integrated marketing communications (IMC) frameworks were developed prior to the development of the widespread use of digital and SM for information seeking, sales and service. The purpose of this paper is to investigate this issue for services marketers specifically as they differ from FMCG, industrial and durable marketers in terms of marketing messages, branding, media and channels. Furthermore, as they are less reliant on outsourced sale channels they have more potential than other industries to integrate social and digital media to build awareness, brands and sales.

Design/methodology/approach
– Depth interviews were conducted with eight senior services marketing executives to identify the impact of SM on marketing communications planning, implementation and measurement.

Findings – The findings revealed that the unique characteristics of SM (such as interactivity and individualisation, integration of communication and distribution channels, immediacy and information collection) impact traditional marketing communications frameworks. These impacts manifested in 12 modifications specific to services and SM to traditional generic IMC frameworks encompassed by the themes of reach, service channel, word-of-mouth advocacy, consumer generated messages, listening and behavioural measurement.

Practical implications
– The rapidly evolving nature of SM means senior services marketers need to educate organisational stakeholders regarding implementation issues, which may be a barrier to effective integration of SM within marketing communications.

Originality/value
– With digital marketing communications budgets reaching 30 per cent within some organisations, it is timely to put forward a marketing communication decision-making framework that first incorporates SM and second is suitable for services marketers.

Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is playing a very important role in human machine communications. Recent communication systems depend on the brain signals for communication. In these systems, users clearly manipulate their brain activity rather than using motor movements in order to generate signals that could be used to give commands and control any communication devices, robots or computers. In this paper, the aim was to estimate the performance of a brain computer interface (BCI) system by detecting the prosthetic motor imaginary tasks by using only a single channel of electroencephalography (EEG). The participant is asked to imagine moving his arm up or down and our system detects the movement based on the participant brain signal. Some features are extracted from the brain signal using Mel-Frequency Cepstrum Coefficient and based on these feature a Hidden Markov model is used to help in knowing if the participant imagined moving up or down. The major advantage in our method is that only one channel is needed to take the decision. Moreover, the method is online which means that it can give the decision as soon as the signal is given to the system. Hundred signals were used for testing, on average 89 % of the up down prosthetic motor imaginary tasks were detected correctly. This method can be used in many different applications such as: moving artificial prosthetic limbs and wheelchairs due to it's high speed and accuracy.

Two-way relaying systems are known to be capable of providing higher spectral efficiency compared with one-way relaying systems. However, the channel estimation problem for two-way relaying systems becomes more complicated. In this paper, we propose a superimposed channel training scheme for two-way MIMO relay communication systems, where the individ-ual channel information for users-relay and relay-users links are estimated. The optimal structure of the source and relay training sequences are derived when the mean-squared error (MSE) of channel estimation is minimized. We also optimize the power allocation between the source and relay training sequences to improve the performance of the algorithm. Numerical examples are shown to demonstrate the performance of the proposed channel training algorithm.
