Functionalized chitosan (CS) were widely used as drug delivery system in the chemotherapy of various disease. In this work, folate (FA) was conjugated into chitosan molecular as targeting ligand based on Schiff reaction between –NH2 group of CS and –COOH group of FA. And nanoparticles were made by emulsion method with vanillin novel cross-linking agent. The FA modified CS and its nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Zeta potential. SEM results confirmed the nanoparticles made from FA-CS conjugate were spherical in shape and were about 100 nm in size. Zeta potential analysis revealed that the nanoparticles were negatively charged with charge density of -7.73mV.

In this article, we report a facile method for preparing graphene oxide (GO) hybrid materials consisting of copper ions (Cu2+) complexed with GO, where Cu2+ acted as bridges connecting GO sheets. The method of film formation is based on cross-linking GO using Cu2+ followed by filtration onto nanoporous supports. This binding can be rationalized due to the chemical interaction between the functional groups on GO and the metal ion. We observed that there was a decrease in charge transfer resistance through electrochemical study. It suggests that the presence of metal ions in GO films could introduce new energy levels along the electron transport pathway and open up possible conduction channels. We also found that the hybrid graphene film assembled with Cu2+ dramatically decreases resistance through flash light reduction.

Key points in the formation of liquid crystalline (LC) dispersions of graphene oxide (GO) and their processability via wet-spinning to produce long lengths of micrometer-dimensional fibers and yarns are addressed. Based on rheological and polarized optical microscopy investigations, a rational relation between GO sheet size and polydispersity, concentration, liquid crystallinity, and spinnability is proposed, leading to an understanding of lyotropic LC behavior and fiber spinnability. The knowledge gained from the straightforward formulation of LC GO “inks” in a range of processable concentrations enables the spinning of continuous conducting, strong, and robust fibers at concentrations as low as 0.075 wt%, eliminating the need for relatively concentrated spinning dope dispersions. The dilute LC GO dispersion is proven to be suitable for fiber spinning using a number of coagulation strategies, including non-solvent precipitation, dispersion destabilization, ionic cross-linking, and polyelectrolyte complexation. One-step continuous spinning of graphene fibers and yarns is introduced for the first time by in situ spinning of LC GO in basic coagulation baths (i.e., NaOH or KOH), eliminating the need for post-treatment processes. The thermal conductivity of these graphene fibers is found to be much higher than polycrystalline graphite and other types of 3D carbon based materials.

A simple continuous flow wet-spinning method to achieve mechanical reinforcement of the two oppositely charged biopolymers chitosan and gellan gum is described. The mechanical properties of these biopolymers are influenced by the order of addition. Using a facile method for mechanical reinforcement of gellan gum/chitosan fibers resulted in increases in Young's modulus, tensile strength, and toughness. Spinning gellan gum into chitosan resulted in the strongest fibers. We show that our fibers can provide a mechanical alternative for bio-fibers without the need of cross-linking. It is demonstrated that the fibers become ionically conducting in the presence of water vapor.

A pH-sensitive, mechanically strong and thermally stable graphene/poly (acrylic acid) (graphene/PAA) hydrogel was prepared via reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerizations in the presence of a cross-linking agent. The RAFT agent was covalently coupled onto graphene basal planes via an esterification reaction, with benzoic acid functionalities pre-attached on graphene with its aryl diazonium salt precursor. AFM and SEM analysis revealed the successful preparation of single layered graphene sheets and graphene/polymer hydrogels with pH controlled porous structures. Attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) verified the successful stepwise preparation of graphene/PAA hydrogel. This graphene/PAA hydrogel was pH-sensitive and more mechanically elastic than the PAA hydrogel prepared without graphene. The pH sensitivity of the hydrogel was further utilized for controlled drug release. Doxorubicin was chosen as a model drug and loaded into the hydrogels. The drug loading and release experiment indicated that this hydrogel can be used to efficiently control drug release in the intestine environment (pH = 7.4), better than release in a more acidic environment.© 2013 Elsevier Ltd. In this study an effective nanocomposite antimicrobial agent for wool fabric was introduced. The silver loaded nano TiO(2) as a nanocomposite was prepared through UV irradiation in an ultrasonic bath. The nanocomposite was stabilized on the wool fabric surface by using citric acid as a friendly cross-linking agent. The treated wool fabrics indicated an antimicrobial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. Increasing the concentration of Ag/TiO(2) nanocomposite led to an improvement in antibacterial activities of the treated fabrics. Also increasing the amount of citric acid improved the adsorption of Ag/TiO(2) on the wool fabric surface leading to enhance antibacterial activity. The EDS spectrum, SEM images, and XRD patterns was studied to confirm the presence of existence of nanocomposite on the fabric surface. The role of both cross-linking agent and nanocomposite concentrations on the results was investigated using response surface methodology (RSM).

Photo yellowing of wool is one of the most important problems which have negative impacts on various aspects of wool prompting scientists to find a solution over the past decades. In this research the protective features of nano-titanium dioxide particles against UV on wool fabric were discussed and the color variations of wool samples after UV irradiation were measured and reported. It was shown that nano TiO2 is a suitable UV absorber and its effect depends on the concentration. Also, it was assumed that butane tetracarboxylic acid plays a prominent role as a cross-linking agent to stabilize the nano-titanium dioxide as well as a polyanion to maintain negative charges on the wool surface for higher nano particles absorption. Also the variables conditions were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM).

Wool is the most important animal fiber used in textile industries, but its photostability is very low. Scientists have searched for new ways to increase the photostability of wool. As TiO2 nano particles have features suitable for new applications, the UV-blocking power of nano TiO2 may be used for protecting fabrics against UV rays. Treatment of wool with TiO 2 can be effective for controlling photodegradation. This study focused on protecting wool fabric against UV rays using nano TiO2. To this end, oxidized and raw wool were treated with citric acid as the cross-linking agent and different concentrations of nano TiO2. The whiteness and yellowness of wool fabric samples were reported. XRD patterns proved the existence of TiO2 nano-particles on the wool surface. Finally, the results revealed that nano TiO2 is a suitable UV absorber on wool fabric and its effect depends on concentration.

Nanotechnology-based textile coating is a combined approach to textile engineering which mainly relies on using nanoscale materials and novel methods to produce smart finishing. Several methods have been introduced to generate smart coatings on textiles including the sol–gel technique, layer-by-layer technique, cross-linking by polymers, and thin film deposition. Nanofibre coating of different metallic and nonmetallic substrates has been intensively considered for sensory and infrastructure purposes. This chapter provides an overview of nanotechnology-based coating approaches with a detailed discussion of applications in practical and potential fields. Future trends of new types of smart coatings on textiles are also presented.

High-performance reduced graphene oxide/nickel foam (rGO/NF) composite electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors were prepared by flame-induced reduction of dry graphene oxide (GO) coated on nickel foam. Flame reduction of GO is a facile, feasible and cost-effective reduction technique, which is conducted without the need of any reductant. Most importantly, the rGO obtained by flame reduction showed a typical disordered cross-linking network and randomly distributed pores, which provide accessible routes for fast transportation of ions. It was demonstrated that the rGO/NF electrode with embedded current collector (NF) exhibited better electrochemical performance than conventional rGO film counterparts, including a high gravimetric specific capacitance of 228.6 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1, excellent rate capability (over 81% retention at 32 A g-1) and high cycling stability with only 5.3% capacitance decay over 10,000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry at a ultrahigh scan rate of 1000 mV s-1. This facile method for the fabrication of rGO/NF electrodes could envision enormous potential for high performance energy storage devices.

The main aim of this study was to examine affective linkages between competition-related and competition-extraneous concern domains. A secondary purpose was to establish the contributions of pre-competition affects to post-competition performance appraisals, independent of pre-competition performance expectations. Thirty-nine highly skilled male martial artists were assessed at five random times a day for a week and 1 h before a major competition on affective states and sources of concern. They also reported their performance expectations and post-competition performance appraisals. Affective states triggered by competition-related and competition-extraneous concerns persisted in time. Carry-over effects were stronger after reports of competition-related concerns, emphasizing the subjective importance of the competitive event. Although positive (enjoyment and surprise) and negative (sadness and guilt) affective spill-over was observed from competition-extraneous to competition-related concerns, the reverse held true only for disgust. These findings may be due to the athletes' ability to regulate affective reactions within a sporting setting, in particular. Spill-over from competition-extraneous to competition-related concerns is indicative of a lesser degree of control over work/study and family life. Given that average weekly negative affects and anger/disgust were independent predictors of post-competition performance appraisals, the phenomenon of spill-over and other affective linkage mechanisms in sport warrant further investigation.

Considered in this paper is the concept of "change"for practising teachers who are teaching and learning African music in Melbourne, Australia. African music and culture is seen as an effective way for these teachers to experience a cross-cultural odyssey through both social and situated learning. This chapter reports on a music project where teachers perceived African music to be an effective way to leam link and participate with a new music and culture. The chapter summarises pertinent findings relating to why and how teachers are engaging with African music.

Research findings support the idea that workload is a significant stressor associated with a variety of deleterious psychological reactions, including burnout, in several different samples of workers. A theoretical model is put forth in the present study in which workload is seen as contributing to distress and depression. Increasingly, organisations are experiencing changes as a result of extensive downsizing, restructuring, and merging. As a result of fiscal restraint, hospitals have been forced to merge, close, downsize, and restructure. Workloads have increased among hospital staff, particularly nurses. This study applies a theoretical model to the understanding of the impact of workload on nurses employed in hospitals experiencing downsizing, particularly on their distress, burnout, and depression. Respondents were 488 nurses who were employed in hospitals that were undergoing restructuring and in which units had already been closed as a result of restructuring. Results of structural equation modeling showed that the data partially fit the model and that workload contributed substantially to levels of depression through distress reactions. Further results showed that cynicism, anger, and emotional exhaustion significantly operationalised distress reactions. This study is unique theoretically in linking anger, cynicism, and emotional exhaustion in a single model that predicts distress levels from workload. The findings that anger, cynicism, and emotional exhaustion operationalised distress indicate the importance of studying patterns of negative reactions and their consequences for depression. Implications of the results are discussed for interventions that can be taken by organisations in order to reduce workloads.

Segmentation has been widely studied in tourism research e.g. Dolnicar (2004). Dawley (2006) points that commonly used segmentation variables such as demographics lead to identifiable segments which are not actionable while other useful approaches e.g. psychographics, are actionable but not identifiable. The objective of this paper is to develop a two-stage linkage approach to segmentation whereby cluster analysis using psychographic variables is conducted within demographic group. Demographic groups are selected based on propensity to travel. This research utilizes data generated from a cross-sectional self-completed survey of 49,105 Australian respondents on travel and tourism. The managerial usefulness of this segmentation is assessed. Clearly segments can be directly linked both demographically and psychographically.
