A sculptural goblet inspired by childhood experiences and how they equate to contemporary fairytales. The work is hand-blown and engraved. This piece represents scene one in the narrative. It is a work that condenses the animated moving image into a sculptural form.

The Fiftieth Gate : an Australian case study in twentieth-century 'popular' publishing

On Sunday 6 April 1997, historian Mark Baker's first non-academic book was launched at Melbourne's iconic migrant portal, Station Pier. The guest list of over 500 invitees included representatives of many print media organisations, most of whom interviewed the author. His photograph was reproduced a week later in the 'Agenda' section of The Age newspaper. In this portrait, Baker leans on the railings beside the massive structure of Station Pier. Framed by sea and sky, he is caught glancing pensively over his shoulder past the camera and into the middle distance. He is alone. The day is bleak. Here, the reader is invited to surmise, is a man with much on his mind. In a flash of inspiration the sub-editor has prefaced the accompanying caption, 'Back to the future', linking the story with the mass media of film and television.

Cecil street studio: improvised community and sustainable practices

It is a little after 7.00pm on a Sunday evening and people are still arriving, slightly hurried as they kick off their shoes before entering the studio. They pay $7.00 and find a seat facing the bare studio floor; white floor against the pink walls. The room seems crowded, although the numbers are not large, and people talk comfortably sitting on the few benches and chairs or on the floor. One of the performers emerges from her conversation amongst the audience to front the group and the babble drops away. “How many of you are new to Conundrum?’ she asks. A few people raise their hands, but many do not. The question is a litmus test for the state of the audience and as a way to bring the novice into the game. “Everything performed here tonight will be completely improvised” she continues. “And tonight on Conundrum we have…” and she rattles off a list of the names of the groups or solo performers who will be performing that evening. Some of the names or groups are different from the last Conundrum one month previously. But two of the groups, State of Flux and 5 Square Metres, have been performing at Conundrum, on the last Sunday of every month, for the last eight years.

Abstracts of the Inaugural Australian Conference for Cognitive Neuropsychology and Cognitive Neuropsychiatry

The first Australian Conference for Cognitive Neuropsychology and Cognitive Neuropsychiatry was conducted by the School of Psychology at Deakin University, Geelong, from Friday, July 13 to Sunday, July 15 and was attended by over 50 cognitive psychologists, neuropsychologists and speech pathologists from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK. The Conference aimed to bring together researchers from different disciplines including linguistics, psychology, philosophy and speech pathology to present research that relates (neuropsychological or psychiatric) impairment to theories of normal cognitive functioning. The scientific program of the conference included 24 papers of exceptional quality. They were organised into the following thematic sessions: Disorders of language comprehension and production; Semantic memory and category-specific disorders; Reading: development and acquired dyslexia; Writing: development and acquired dyslexia; Memory; Object and face recognition; Theory of mind; Misidentification syndromes. Keynote speakers were Professor Andy Young from the University of York, England and Professor Max Coltheart from the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Sciences, Sydney.

Family tries

My younger brother , you know, was the best one of us. Yeah, he frigging was, so no one say a word about him and what he done, right. H e got onto an A-grade Rugby League club team and we used to see him real as life on the telly on Sunday. Yep, there he was in all his glory in all our glory. H e even got into the papers too. Got a great shot of him still. There he lies stretched out full length along the ground, the soles of his boots showing, his arms fully out though with the elbows bent just a little to ease his fall, but you know what, his effing face is turned to the camera. H e knows that that was good. It was too, the try of the week. Great picture, that's why I keep it, as does mum and dad. H e was bloody brilliant, but with his fame came the girls from better suburbs than ours can ever hope to be. Finally, got himself hitched to a fancy bitch whose folks had money in the bank and possibly owned the bloody thing too. Well, it was like that, but he should've stuck with his own kind, though they ain't much better. I should know, because of what lately happened to me. By the way, my name is Rose, and I've got thorns as more than one has found out to his grief...

Telescope

Telescope is a feature length time lapse of reflections, changes in sunlight of my backyard, assembled over 20 years. Telescope starts in Super 8 and ends with digital video, shot mostly while the family were themselves at work, somewhere else. It is an emptied landscape. When people think of Australia they imagine open space and bush. But really most Australians inhabit or were born in suburban spaces, often with backyards with fences, big enough for fruit trees, lawns and clotheslines. I consider this a place of absence that speaks to many things that our culture avoids.The backyard as emblem of a White Australia that hit its highpoint in the 1950s, for example. Australia is a migrant culture settled by waves of newcomers escaping, running away from somewhere else, leaving to forget. Another story concerns the continued invisibility of the indigenous people. When the British first planted the Union Jack on Australian soil and said "there is nothing here" they set up a tradition of denial as our founding principle. This still plagues us. What is festering in Australian backyards are these denials and erasures that I try to bring out in the soundtrack, that plays like the radio that meanders through a lazy Sunday afternoon. Such sounds try to tell stories of absence, of occupation, and of a nostalgia for an Australia that no longer exists, but still palpably reverberates around the suburban backyard.

Detecting female precise natal philopatry in green turtles using assignment methods

It is well established that sea turtles return to natal rookeries to mate and lay their eggs, and that individual females are faithful to particular nesting sites within the rookery. Less certain is whether females are precisely returning to their natal beach. Attempts to demonstrate such precise natal philopatry with genetic data have had mixed success. Here we focused on the green turtles of three nesting sites in the Ascension Island rookery, separated by 5–15 km. Our approach differed from previous work in two key areas. First, we used male microsatellite data (five loci) reconstructed from samples collected from their offspring (N = 17) in addition to data for samples taken directly from females (N = 139). Second, we employed assignment methods in addition to the more traditional F-statistics. No significant genetic structure could be demonstrated with FST. However, when average assignment probabilities of females were examined, those for nesting populations in which they were sampled were indeed significantly higher than their probabilities for other populations (Mann–Whitney U-test: P < 0.001). Further evidence was provided by a significant result for the mAIC test (P < 0.001), supporting greater natal philopatry for females compared with males. The results suggest that female natal site fidelity was not sufficient for significant genetic differentiation among the nesting populations within the rookery, but detectable with assignment tests.
