Inspired by the approach to understanding, critiquing and rebuilding both planning and the urban environment that Jane Jacobs did so well in her Death and Life of Great American Cities, this paper begins with the personal experience of living in one suburban neighborhood in Melbourne, Victoria. Particular elements which make this both a positive and negative experience are then connected to the geographical, planning and urban studies literature to offer a broader context in which better suburbs can be planned, developed and activated.

In Australia, as in many other developed countries, regional and rural areas are suffering from an overall decline in population with a specific loss of young adults (16-30 year olds). A decline in population, linked with the Australia-wide problems of ageing populations and diminishing birth rates, is leading to a social and economic decline in many regional cities and towns that threaten their long-term sustainability due to the lack of skilled workers and professionals. Although the loss of population from regional and rural areas has the potential to affect the national economy, it has mainly fallen to local government to combat the problem. Local government is beginning to use place marketing to attract and retain residents in addition to its traditional use of place marketing to attract industry and investment. This paper examines the concept of “place” marketing as means of arresting or reversing the decline, and examines as a case study the approach of a group of adjoining local government areas in Australia who have developed a regional and collaborative approach to place marketing.

This article examines the processes of remembering and transmitting experiences of the Great War within families of Australian veterans now passed on. It focuses on a recent boom in private publishing of ancestors’ personal letters and diaries and argues that these practices continue to reimagine and reshape family memories of the war. In so doing it exposes the range of family members implicated in family remembrance then and now, and so complicates any process by which a war almost beyond living memory is to become entirely understood by its public myths and representations.

At 16 million hectares, the Great Western Woodlands is the world's largest remaining temperate woodland. Here, the woodland birds so decimated in other parts of Australia still survive and thrive. The size of the area ensures that species have the capacity to follow their preferred food resources across the entire landscape. The article outlines conservation efforts in the woodlands to date.
