A new fabric with potential in medical textiles has been developed by application of a surface coating on wool using pulsed plasma polymerization of HMDSO. This coating enabled a controllable MVTR and surface adhesion. MVTR in the range recommended for optimum wound healing was obtained by varying frequency, monomer pressure and deposition time. Lower surface adhesion was achieved. Peeling tests, contact angle measurements, SPM force curves and ATR FT-IR were used to characterize the surfaces for both wool and a PE model substrate. All these results were consistent with a decrease in surface energy after PP-HMDSO treatment. ATR FT-IR results showed a siloxane film with less organic Si(CH3)n groups and more SiOSi cross-links.

Solvent and ion dynamics in PMMA based gels have been investigated as a function of the loading of nanosized TiO2 particles. The gels have a molar ratio of 46.5:19:4.5:30 of ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), lithium perchlorate and PMMA, respectively. A series of samples with 0, 4, 6 and 8 wt.% TiO2 filler were investigated. The diffusion coefficients for the lithium ions and for the two solvents (EC and PC) were investigated by pfg-NMR. It was shown that the addition of filler to the gel electrolytes enhances the diffusion of the cations, while the diffusion of the solvents remains constant. Raman measurements show no significant changes in ion–ion interactions with the addition of fillers, while the ionic conductivity is seen to decrease. However, the sample with 8 wt.% TiO2 had a conductivity close to that of the unfilled sample.

The addition of nano-sized ceramic particles to the plastic crystal ethyl-methyl pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)amide (P12TFSA) has been investigated by means of DSC and conductivity. The thermal behaviour of the plastic crystal as a function of filler content suggests that the filler particles decrease the onset temperature of the melting slightly at high loadings, however they do not decrease the crystallinity of the material. Furthermore, the IV → III transition decreases in intensity, indicating that the addition of filler increases the possibility for the crystal to remain in metastable rotator phases also at lower temperatures. The conductivity shows a more than one order of magnitude increase with the addition of filler, with a filler concentration dependence that levels out above ~ 10 wt.% TiO2.

Poly(terthiophene) is an electronically conducting polymer with potential applications in solar energy devices. In the present study a series of poly(terthiophene) (PTTh) films are chemically polymerized (CP) at various temperatures and compared with a novel method of vapour phase polymerization (VPP). Utilizing the thiophene trimer (terthiophene) as the starting material, polymerization is achieved with Fe(III) tosylate. The films are characterized by their Raman and absorption spectra, in addition to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and four-point probe surface conductivity measurements. From the spectroscopy studies, increased conjugation length of the polymer chains with decreasing temperature or vapour phase polymerization is evident. More surprisingly, DSC results indicate the order of the polymer chains is dramatically enhanced by vapour phase polymerization and the D.C. conductivity is an order of magnitude higher for VPP compared with traditional CP films. Additionally, the optical micrographs reveal a significantly different morphology than the films cast from solution.

Nano-particle oxide fillers including TiO2, SiO2 and Al2O3 have previously been shown to have a significant affect on the properties of both polymer and polymer gel electrolytes. In some cases, conductivity increases of one order of magnitude have been reported in crystalline PEO–base complexes. In this work, we report the effects of TiO2 and SiO2 on a poly(Li-AMPS)-based gel polyelectrolyte. Impedance spectroscopy and pfg-NMR spectroscopy indicates an increase in the number of available charge carriers with the addition of filler. An ideal amount of ceramic filler has been identified, with additional filler only saturating the system and reducing the conductivity below that of the pristine polyelectrolyte system. SEM micrographs suggest a model whereby the filler interacts readily with the sulfonate group; the surface area of the filler being an important factor.

The present work examines the extrusion and mechanical properties of MExlOO alloys, which contain levels of rare earth alloying additions up to 0.4 wt%. It is shown that these alloys can display the high extrudability of alloy Ml with strengths nearing those of AZ31. Most importantly, the grades display high room temperature ductility; values of total tensile elongation as high as 30% have been observed. These benefits derive from a combination of grain refinement and texture weakening.

pH sensitive graphene−polymer composites have been prepared by the modification of graphene basal planes with pyrene-terminated poly(2-N,N′-(dimethyl amino ethyl acrylate) (PDMAEA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) via π−π stacking. The pyrene-terminal PDMAEA and PAA were synthesized using reversible addition−fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with a pyrene-functional RAFT agent. The graphene−polymer composites were found to demonstrate phase transfer behavior between aqueous and organic media at different pH values. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis revealed that the thicknesses of the graphene−polymer sheets were approximately 3.0 nm when prepared using PDMAEA (Mn: 6800 and PDI: 1.12). The surface coverage of polymer chains on the graphene basal plane was calculated to be 5.3 × 10−11 mol cm−2 for PDMAEA and 1.3 × 10−10 mol cm−2 for PAA. The graphene−polymer composites were successfully characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Self-assembly of the two oppositely charged graphene−polymer composites afforded layer-by-layer (LbL) structures as evidenced by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements.

This work investigates the effect of nanosized Al2O3 addition on the sinterability of YSZ electrolyte. (1-x)YSZ + Al2O3 ceramics with compositions x = 0 to 0.01 were prepared by the conventional mixed oxide route from a commercial powder suspension (particle size <50 nm), and sintered at 1200 to 1500 degrees C for 2 hours in air. Densification, phase evolution, and microstructure were characterized by SEM/EDS and XRD. An improvement in sintered density was observed for the samples with 0.2 to 0.5 mol% Al2O3, though depending on the sintering temperature. Only cubic zirconia was detected as crystalline phase, although XRD features suggested chemical interactions depending upon the amount of Al2O3. The grain size of YSZ was homogeneous and no second phase segregation was detected in the tested range of incorporated nano-Al2O3 and sintering temperatures.

The development of a comprehensive, adequate and representative reserve system is the key objective of the National Reserve System, and is supported by all Australian States and Territories. In Victoria, the purchase of private land for incorporation into the parks and reserves system assists in the protection of some of the State’s most endangered ecosystems. This article outlines the ecological attributes of private land purchased for addition to the Victorian public protected area system in 2006 and 2007.

This article describes modifications to a sophisticated commercial rheometer, the Weissenberg Rheogoniometer, to allow a sample in the cone and plate or parallel‐plate geometries to be observed with a high‐quality polarizing microscope. The addition of the microscope does not interfere with the measuring system in any way, so that samples can be observed in the course of rheological experiments.
