This work describes a method for two-dimensional high performance liquid chromatography (2D-HPLC) that uses an isocratic mobile phase with a temperature gradient in the first dimension. Temperature programming was used to manipulate solvent elution strength in place of a mobile phase concentration gradient. This ensured that all eluent fractions transferred into the second dimension were of an identical solvent composition, i.e. the second dimension injection solvent did not increase during the course of the analysis. When applied to a complex natural product extract of coffee, the separation was completed in 35 min and had an orthogonality of 35% (calculated using the bins method) and a spreading angle of 52° as determined via a geometric approach to factor analysis. This approach, incorporating a temperature gradient in the first dimension, compared favourably to previously reported 2D-HPLC separations of coffee, with similar or shorter analysis times.

There is a growing interest to hybrid energy storage devices, such as lithium-ion capacitors, in which battery-type electrodes are combined with capacitor-type ones. It is anticipated that the energy density (either gravimetric or volumetric) of lithium-ion capacitors is improved if pseudocapacitive or fast insertion materials are used instead of conventional activated carbon (AC) in the capacitor-type electrode. MXenes, a new family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, demonstrate metallic conductivity and fast charge-discharge behavior that make them suitable for this application. In this study, we move beyond single electrodes, half-cell studies and demonstrate three types of hybrid cells using Nb2CTx-carbon nanotube (CNT) films. It is shown that lithiated graphite/Nb2CTx-CNT, Nb2CTx-CNT/LiFePO4 and lithiated Nb2CTx-CNT/Nb2CTx-CNT cells are all able to operate within 3 V voltage windows and deliver capacities of 43, 24 and 36 mAh/g (per total weight of two electrodes), respectively. Moreover, the polarity of the electrodes can be reversed in the symmetric Nb2CTx-CNT cells from providing a positive potential between 0 and 3 V to a negative one from -3 to 0 V. It is shown that the volumetric energy density (50-70 Wh/L) of our first-generation devices with MXene electrodes exceeds that of a lithium titanate/AC capacitor.

This study considers the problem of stability analysis of discrete-time two-dimensional (2D) Roesser systems with interval time-varying delays. New 2D finite-sum inequalities, which provide a tighter lower bound than the existing ones based on 2D Jensen-type inequalities, are first developed. Based on an improved Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, the newly derived inequalities are then utilised to establish delay-range-dependent linear matrix inequality-based stability conditions for a class of discrete time-delay 2D systems. The effectiveness of the obtained results is demonstrated by numerical examples.

Abstract:-Global language and cultural communicative competency is an ever increasing requirement in our connected world. Learners of Arabic at the only five Australian universities where Arabic is taught have access to predominantly on-campus delivery modes. One of the main challenges learners face when learning another language (L2) in an academic setting in countries where that language is not actively used – so little L2 exposure – is that it is harder to provide meaningful contexts for learning. This restriction in L2 exposure in the formal academic framework is due to the limited face-to-face learning time and, more significantly, is compounded by lack of exposure to the language‟s authentic use settings. Students are often isolated from the target language‟s authentic discourse communities and native speakers. This situation is exacerbated for Cloud (online) students, studying in relative isolation. All of these factors make developing communicative oral fluency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) moredifficult and challenging for many learners. This paper will discuss two innovative approaches used at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia to enable learners of Arabic at Deakin University to practice their developing skills by listening, practising, and experiencing directly how the language is used outside the classroom boundaries as well as allow learners to develop their oral and cultural communicative competency by engaging them in simulating and evolving authentic language scenarios with native Arabic speakers through the Virtual World (VW).
