Research in Australia’s ethnically diverse rural and regional communities requires an approach that is informed by notions of space, place and culture, and which recognises race as a relational social construct mediated by social and political discourse and context, and prone to change overtime. This critical review examines how teacher education researchers connect culturally competent research and rural ethics with the view to improving education systems, addressing rural teacher workforce issues, informing the preparation of pre-service teachers, and, most importantly, ensuring that rural students have access to educational opportunities that are engaging and meet their needs. It focuses specifically on researcher positionality on the insider-outsider continuum and how this informs ethical research in diverse rural communities, particularly those in which visible new migrants reside. Peer-reviewed journal articles that discuss how education researchers negotiate working in rural space are examined and considered in relation to discourse about ethics in practice and the insider/outsider continuum. Scholarship reflected in the literature spanned the fields of rural/research ethics, inclusive education, education research methodology and research with new migrants, minority and marginalised groups.

In recent years, metal foams are becoming more and more popular due to their high energy absorption ability and low density, which are being widely used in automotive engineering and aerospace engineering. As a design guide, foams can be characterised by several main geometric parameters, such as pore size, pore shape, spatial distribution and arrangement and so on. Considering most foam materials have random distributions of cell size and cell shape, the digital material representation and modelling of such materials become more complex. Cell size and shape effects on mechanical behaviours of metal foams have been found and investigated numerically and experimentally in authors' previous studies in which the authors have developed a digital framework for the representation, modelling and evaluation of multi-phase materials including metal foams. In this study, 2-/3-D finite element models are both developed to represent metal foams with random cell distributions and then a series of digital testing are simulated to investigate the mechanical behaviours of such foams. For validation and verification purpose, the results obtained from 2-/3-D models have been compared and good agreement has been found which demonstrated the effectiveness of the digital framework developed for metal forms. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Little research has examined the return on marketing research, be that financial or knowledge acquisition. Furthermore, there has been insufficient research into the factors affecting the conduct of marketing research. This paper investigates and reports on a conceptual model proposed by Yaman (2000), which explores knowledge acquisition, dissemination, and utilisation through marketing research. The study specifically explores and attempts to replicate the model’s conceptual structure. The data were collected electronically via emails and an HTML web-form questionnaire, with a sample of 182 being obtained. Using structural equation modelling, the results obtained indicated an adequate fit for a modified Yaman model to the data from this particular sample.

The need for an automated approach to forensic digital investigation has been recognized for some years, and several authors have developed frameworks in this direction. The aim of this paper is to assist the forensic investigator with the generation and testing of hypotheses in the analysis phase. In doing so, the authors present a new architecture which facilitates the move to automation of the investigative process; this new architecture draws together several important components of the literature on question and answer methodologies including the concept of ‘pivot’ word and sentence ranking. Their architecture is supported by a detailed case study demonstrating its practicality.

We review recent developments in the estimation of an optimal treatment strategy or regime from longitudinal data collected in an observational study. We also propose novel methods for using the data obtained from an observational database in one health-care system to determine the optimal treatment regime for biologically similar subjects in a second health-care system when, for cultural, logistical, or financial reasons, the two health-care systems differ (and will continue to differ) in the frequency of, and reasons for, both laboratory tests and physician visits. Finally, we propose a novel method for estimating the optimal timing of expensive and/or painful diagnostic or prognostic tests. Diagnostic or prognostic tests are only useful in so far as they help a physician to determine the optimal dosing strategy, by providing information on both the current health state and the prognosis of a patient because, in contrast to drug therapies, these tests have no direct causal effect on disease progression. Our new method explicitly incorporates this no direct effect restriction.

Hjalmarsson (2010) considers an OLS-based estimator of predictive panel regressions that is argued to be mixed normal under very general conditions. In a recent paper, Westerlund et al. (2016) show that while consistent, the estimator is generally not mixed normal, which invalidates standard normal and chi-squared inference. The purpose of the present paper is to study the consequences of this theoretical result in small samples, which is done using both simulated and real data.
