This review examines the data pertaining to an important and often underrated EFA, α-linolenic acid (ALA). It examines its sources, metabolism, and biological effects in various population studies, in vitro, animal, and human intervention studies. The main role of ALA was assumed to be as a precursor to the longer-chain n-3 PUFA, EPA and DHA, and particularly for supplying DHA for neural tissue. This paper reveals that the major metabolic route of ALA metabolism is β-oxidation. Furthermore, ALA accumulates in specific sites in the body of mammals (carcass, adipose, and skin), and only a small proportion of the fed ALA is converted to DHA. There is some evidence that ALA may be involved with skin and fur function. There is continuing debate regarding whether ALA has actions of its own in relation to the cardiovascular system and neural function. Cardiovascular disease and cancer are two of the major burdens of disease in the 21st century, and emerging evidence suggests that diets containing ALA are associated with reductions in total deaths and sudden cardiac death. There may be aspects of the action and, more importantly, the metabolism of ALA that need to be elucidated, and these will help us understand the biological effects of this compound better. Additionally, we must not forget that ALA is part of the whole diet and should be seen in this context, not in isolation.

Greywater reuse has become popular in rural and urban communities of Australia. In recent years, the Barwon region of Victoria has been affected by drought and as a result, water restrictions were imposed at different stages. While a water conservation by-law was introduced in February 2003 with overwhelming community support, greywater reuse is still debated among householders, Environment Protection Authority (EPA), local councils, and the water authorities. Higher levels of greywater reuse are needed due to low average rainfall in the region and high water consumption per capita. This paper looks at the position of the different parties that govern greywater reuse and presents the factors that restrain uniform reuse practices. Factors considered include quantity and quality of greywater generated in the Barwon region, current regulatory controls as reviewed through a series of surveys of local councils and water authorities. While the water restrictions resulted in an increased demand for alternative means of watering garden areas, the regulatory conditions were found to be unsettled about greywater reuse, with a wide range of concerns making these authorities unwilling to encourage it.

The aim of the present investigation was to quantify the fate of C18 and long chain polyunsaturated dietary fatty acids in the freshwater fish, Murray cod, using the in vivo, whole-body fatty acid balance method. Juvenile Murray cod were fed one of five iso-nitrogenous, iso-energetic, semipurified experimental diets in which the dietary fish oil (FO) was replaced (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%) with a blended vegetable oil (VO), specifically formulated to match the major fatty acid classes [saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and n-6 PUFA] of cod liver oil (FO). However, the PUFA fraction of the VO was dominated by C18 fatty acids, while C20/22 fatty acids were prevalent in the FO PUFA fraction. Generally, there was a clear reflection of the dietary fatty acid composition across each of the five treatments in the carcass, fillet, and liver. Lipid metabolism was affected by the modification of the dietary lipid source. The desaturation and elongation of C18 PUFAs increased with vegetable oil substitution, supported by the occurrence of longer and higher desaturated homologous fatty acids. However, increased elongase and desaturase activity is unlikely to fulfill the gap observed in fatty acid composition resulting from decreased highly unsaturated fatty acids intake.

The objective of this study was to determine the distribution pattern of lipids and fatty acids in different tissues of farmed Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii).

Differences in lipid content were found amongst different portions of the fillet, being lowest in the dorsal/cranial portion (P1) and highest in the more ventral/caudal portion (P8) (P < 0.05). The latter also recorded the highest amount of monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and the lowest in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), arachidonic acid, 20:4n − 6 (ArA), docosahexaenoic acid, 22:6n − 3, (DHA) and the n3/n6 ratio. In general, lipid content in the different fillet portions was inversely correlated to PUFA and directly to MUFA. Contents of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and eicosapentaenoic acid, 20:5n − 3 (EPA) did not show any discernible trends in the different fillet portions, while significant differences in contents of DHA and ArA were observed. This study shows that lipid deposition in Murray cod varies markedly and that different fatty acids are deposited differently throughout the fillet.

Due to the growing knowledge about the role of specific fatty acids in health and disease, dietary intake measurements of individual fatty acids or classes of fatty acids are becoming increasingly important. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of the Nambour FFQ to estimate intakes of specific fatty acids, particularly PUFA. The study population was a sub-sample of adult participants in a randomised controlled trial of [beta]-carotene and sunscreen in the prevention of skin cancer (n 43). Dietary intake was assessed by a self-administered FFQ and a weighed food record (WFR). Non-fasting blood samples were collected and analysed for plasma phospholipid fatty acids. Median intakes on the FFQ were generally higher than the WFR except for the n-3 PUFA groups, where the FFQ estimated higher intakes. Correlations between the FFQ and WFR were moderate (r 0–32-0-59) except for trans fatty acids (r 0–03). Correlations between each of the dietary assessment methods and the plasma phospholipids were poor for all fatty acids other than the PUFA. Using the methods of triads approach, the FFQ validity coefficients for total n-3 fatty acids, total long chain n-3 fatty acids, EPA, arachidonic acid, docosapentaenoic acid and DHA were 0–50, 0–63, 0–45 and 0–62 and 0–62, respectively. For most fatty acids, the FFQ adequately estimates group mean fatty acid intakes and can adequately rank individuals; however, the ability of this FFQ to estimate trans fatty acids was poor.

A rate-limiting step in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) formation from α-linolenic acid (ALA) involves peroxisomal oxidation of 24:6n-3 to DHA. The aim of the study was to determine whether conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) would enhance conversion of ALA to DHA in humans on an ALA-supplemented diet. The subjects (n=8 per group) received daily supplementation of ALA (11g) and either CLA (3.2g) or placebo for 8 weeks. At baseline, 4 and 8 weeks, blood was collected for plasma fatty acid analysis and a number of physiological measures were examined. The ALA-supplemented diet increased plasma levels of ALA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The addition of CLA to the ALA diet resulted in increased plasma levels of CLA, as well as ALA and EPA. Plasma level of DHA was not increased with either the ALA alone or ALA plus CLA supplementation. The results demonstrated that CLA was not effective in enhancing DHA levels in plasma in healthy volunteers.

Background and aim
As an evaluation of fatty acid intake measurement, our aim was to examine associations between diet and plasma phospholipid (PL) fatty acids, and whether these were modified by age, sex, country of birth, fasting status, use of cholesterol-lowering medication, body size, chronic disease and other lifestyle factors.

Methods and results
Cross-sectional analysis of plasma PL fatty acid composition and dietary fatty acid intake over 12 months from a 121-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in 4439 men and women aged 40–69 years, born in Australia, Greece or Italy. Crude correlation coefficients ranged from 0.18 to 0.40; and corrected correlation coefficients from 0.38 to 0.78 for total monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, n-6, n-3 fatty acids, oleic acid, linoleic acid, EPA and DHA. Weaker associations were observed for other fatty acids. The associations did not vary significantly by fasting status, use of lipid lowering medication or alcohol intake, but for some fatty acids did vary by sex, age, body mass index, country of birth, smoking and previous heart attack or diabetes.

Conclusions
The FFQ provides useful information on intakes of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Correlations did not differ by fasting status, or use of lipid-lowering medication.

Both n−6 and n−3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are recognized as essential nutrients in the human diet, yet reliable data on population intakes are limited. The aim of the present study was to ascertain the dietary intakes and food sources of individual n−6 and n−3 PUFA in the Australian population. An existing database with fatty acid composition data on 1690 foods was updated with newly validated data on 150 foods to estimate the fatty acid content of foods recorded as eaten by 10,851 adults in the 1995 Australian National Nutrition Survey. Average daily intakes of linoleic (LA), arachidonic (AA), α-linolenic (LNA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), docosapentaenoic (DPA), and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids were 10.8, 0.052, 1.17, 0.056, 0.026, and 0.106 g, respectively, with longchain (LC) n−3 PUFA (addition of FPA, DPA, and DHA) totaling 0.189 g; median intakes were considerably lower (9.0 g LA, 0.024 g AA, 0.95 g LNA, 0.008 g EPA, 0.006 g DPA, 0.015 g DHA, and 0.029 g LC n−3 PUFA). Fats and oils, meat and poultry, cereal-based products and cereals, vegetables, and nuts and seeds were important sources of n−6 PUFA, while cereal-based products, fats and oils, meat and poultry, cereals, milk products, and vegetable products were sources of LNA. As expected, seafood was the main source of LC n−3 PUFA, contributing 71%, while meat and eggs contributed 20 and 6%, respectively. The results indicate that the majority of Australians are failing to meet intake recommendations for LC n−3 PUFA (>0.2 g per day) and emphasize the need for strategies, to increase the availability and consumption of n−3-containing foods.

It is widely reported that an association exists between dietary fat intake and the incidence of prostate cancer in humans. To study this association, there is a need for an animal model where prostate carcinogenesis occurs spontaneously. The canine prostate is considered a suitable experimental model for prostate cancer in humans since it is morphologically similar to the human prostate and both humans and dogs have a predisposition to benign and malignant prostate disease. In this study, the FA and lipids profiles of the normal canine prostate tissue from nine dogs were examined. The total lipid content of the canine prostate tissue was 1.7±0.5% (wet weight). The lipid composition analysis using TLC-FID showed that the two major lipid classes were phospholipids and TAG. Total FA, phospholipid, and TAG FA analysis showed that the major FA were palmitic acid (16∶0), stearic acid (18∶0), oleic acid (18∶1), linoleic acid (18∶2n−6), and arachidonic acid (20∶4n−6), The n−3 FA were present at <3% of total FA and included α-linolenic acid (18∶3n−3) (in total and TAG tissue FA), EPA (20∶5n−3) (not in TAG), and DHA (22∶6n−3) (not in TAG). The n−3/n−6 ratio was 1∶11, 1∶13, and 1∶8 in total, phospholipid, and TAG FA, respectively. This study shows the canine prostate has a low level of n−3 FA and a low n−3/n−6 ratio. This is perhaps due to low n−3 content of the diet of the dogs. FA analysis of dogfoods available in Australia showed that the n−3 content in both supermarket and premium bran dogfoods was <3% (wet weight), and the n−3/n−6 ratio was low.

A previous study conducted in guinea pigs suggested that ingestion of diets high in EPA and DHA may result in suboptimal retinal function. The aim of the present study was to evaluate retinal function in pigmented (Long-Evans) rats, raised to a third generation on diets that were either deficient in n-3 PUFA or adequate (with the addition of DHA). Electroretinographic assessment employed full-field white flash stimulation. Photoreceptor responses were evaluated in terms of peak amplitudes and implicit times (a-wave, b-wave), intensity-response functions (Naka-Rushton), and the parameters of a model of transduction (P3). Retinal phospholipid FA composition was measured by capillary GLC. DHA levels were reduced by 55% in n-3-deficient animals compared with the n-3-adequate group, whereas the levels of docosapentaenoic acid n-6 were 44 times higher in n-3-deficient animals. The level of arachidonic acid was marginally higher (12.8%) in n-6-adequate animals. The n-3-deficient animals exhibited significantly reduced retinal sensitivity (σ and S values were both affected by 0.29 log units) and increased b-wave implicit times compared with those fed the n-3-adequate diet. These data suggest that n-3 PUFA are required for development of retinal sensitivity, more so than other indices of retinal function assessed by current methods, such as maximal response amplitude. However, the benefit for retinal function of adding preformed DHA to diets already replete in n-3 PUFA remains unclear.

In view of previously reported anti-inflammatory bioactivity of the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel (NZGLM), the overall lipid profile and fatty acid and sterol composition of the NZGLM from various sites in New Zealand (Hallam Cove, Port Ligar, Little Nikau) were investigated using thin layer  chromatography (TLC) and gas liquid chromatography (GLC). Samples were either frozen (F) or freeze-dried (FD) soon after collection. It was also thought prior to the study, there may be differences in the dietary sources of phytoplankton between the sites, responsible for the bioactivity, however data collected in New Zealand reported no difference in the type of phytoplankton, but a difference in the quantity. There were no major significant differences in the major components of the lipid, fatty acid and sterol composition between FD or frozen samples, nor were there any significant differences in the major composition between sites. The only major difference was between total lipid composition of the freeze-dried and frozen samples due to the removal of water during freeze-drying. Total lipid content on a dry weight basis in FD samples was 8.4 g/100g tissue and was significantly higher than frozen samples (P < 0.05) and there was no significant site variation. The lipid class content between sites was also not significantly different as judged by TLC. Triglyceride (TG) lipid fraction appeared to be the most prominent in the frozen and FD samples. The free fatty acid (FFA) band was the next most prominent band and was visually more prominent in the frozen samples. Sterol esters (SE) were detected in higher amounts in the frozen samples compared with the FD samples. Phospholipid (PL) and sterols (ST) were distributed throughout all samples. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were the main group of fatty acids in both FD and frozen samples (45-46%), most of which were omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids (40-41%). Saturated fatty acids (SFA) accounted for approximately one quarter of total fatty acids, with little variation between FD and frozen samples. The major fatty acids of the NZGLM were docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) (19% in both FD and frozen samples), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3) and palmitic acid (16:0) (15% in both FD and frozen samples). Cholesterol was the most prominent sterol (31% of total sterols). Other major sterols included desmosterol/ brassicasterol (co-eluting), 24-methylenecholesterol, trans-22-dehydrocholesterol, 24- nordehydrocholesterol and occelasterol. This study is unique as it compares the lipid composition of the NZGLM from three sites in New Zealand with the additional effect of processing. This is the second comparative study investigating the lipid, fatty acid and sterol composition of the NZGLM with added interest in the effect of freeze drying on the lipid content of the mussel. This study showed that there were no major significant differences in lipid, sterol and fatty acid composition between the FD and frozen samples of the NZGLM for three sites in New Zealand. Food chain studies and further research is warranted to investigate the presence and role of major and minor lipid.

The Victorian Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has identified Alcoa’s Point Henry aluminium smelter as being a major source of recognized pollutant input due to its disposal of effluent into Corio Bay. Historically, the water quality parameters that have most often exceeded Point Henry’s EPA limits have been pH and suspended solids from the smelter’s discharge points. These waste water discharges also experience high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations which result in algal blooms that occur at the onset of warm weather. The main hypothesis of this study was that “prevention of algal blooming with the onset of warm weather by removal of nutrients during the cooler months, and continued removal thereafter, is better than curing the problems chemically”. Biofilms have been used to remove nutrients from waste waters, but not under the conditions experienced at Point Henry. The aim of this study, therefore, was to determine if significant biofilm growth would be observed on floating structures suspended in the Point Henry waste water stream during the cooler, winter months of the year. Statistically significant biofilm growth occurred on all suspended structures in all discharge ponds during the winter and early spring of 2000. The use of suspended structures, such as AquaMatTM, as an artificial substrate to attract and support periphyton and bacterial communities (biofilms), which are then able to out-compete phytoplankton communities for available nutrients, is therefore a viable option for the Point Henry smelter. However, further research on the competitive performance of biofilms in the Point Henry ponds during the summer months is required before adequate biofilm management strategies can be developed.

Although many studies have focused on the lipid and fatty acids composition of farmed fish, no many have investigated their deposition pattern in different portions of the fillet. Previous studies, mainly on salmonids, have shown that lipids distribution varies greatly depending on the species, portion and type of muscle, but nevertheless, there is not accurate description of its deposition pattern in many fish, in particular in warm water, freshwater carnivorous species. Murray cod is the largest Australian native freshwater carnivorous fish and supports a small but well established and fast growing industry. The objective of this study was therefore to determine if there was any difference in lipid and fatty acid in different tissues such as muscle, liver and perivisceral fat and in different portions of the fillet of farmed Murray cod.

Three size fish (small, medium and large), all fed the same commercial diet, were selected from a commercial intensive farm. The left fillet of each fish was sectioned into nine portions, according to muscle lines and main anatomical features. The nine portions as well as whole right fillet, liver and perivisceral fat were analysed for proximate and fatty acid composition (Table 1).

Differences in lipid content were found amongst different portions of the fillet, with the dorsal/cranial portion (P1) recording the lowest and the more ventral/caudal portion (P8) recording the highest (P<0.05) value. The latter also recorded the highest amount of monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and the lowest of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), arachidonic acid, 20:4n-6 (ArA), docosahexaenoic acid, 22:6n-3, (DHA) and n3/n6 ratio. In general, lipid content in the different fillet portions was inversely correlated to PUFA and directly to MUFA. The results of this study show how different adjacent portions can be and therefore attention need to be paid when conducting chemical, nutritional and sensorial analyses on Murray cod.

The present study was conducted to characterize caviar obtained from farmed white sturgeons (Acipenser transmontanus) subjected to different dietary treatments. Twenty caviar samples from fish fed two experimental diets containing different dietary lipid sources have been analysed for chemical composition, fatty acids and flavour volatile compounds. Fatty acid make up of caviar was only minimally influenced by dietary fatty acid composition. Irrespective of dietary treatments, palmitic acid (16:0) and oleic acid (OA, 18:1 n-9) were the most abundant fatty acid followed by docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3) and eicopentaenoic (EPA, 20:5 n-3).

Thirty-three volatile compounds were isolated using simultaneous distillation–extraction (SDE) and identified by GC–MS. The largest group of volatiles were represented by aldehydes with 20 compounds, representing the 60% of the total volatiles. n-Alkanals, 2-alkenals and 2,4-alkadienals are largely the main responsible for a wide range of flavours in caviar from farmed white surgeon
