This article seeks to address significant gaps in educational policy discourses. Namely, to respond to professional development discourses that lack significant engagement with feminist perspectives, as well as to feminist discourses that fail to consider the significance of in-service education. The data reported here are drawn from a broader case study of Australian primary practitioners from 1975 who were interviewed about their enactment of gender-inclusive reform in the state of Victoria. This discussion takes as its focus the standpoint of 17 in-service educators in terms of their conceptualisation of gender inclusiveness. Three distinctive conceptions emerged in data analysis, which may be represented as three amalgams on a continuum according to a feminist perspective. Implications of this plurality of meaning for professional development are concluded.[2]

Effective nursing care relies on congruent nurse-patient perception of needs. This study used Q methodology to compare nurses' and patients' perceptions of important nursing care behaviour. Q methodology applies statistical analysis to qualitative data through a technique of comparative rating using a forced choice format. The Care Q Sort, comprising fifty statements of nursing behaviour, was administered to nurses and patients from medical wards. Participants ranked the nursing behaviours from most to least important. Analysis was completed on 74 rankings. There was agreement for many behaviours but bimodal distributions for nurses' scores for some statements which may be attributable to different professional levels. An additional open comments section provided an experiential dimension to the research results. The findings will inform nursing practice and patient care planning.

In this paper, a narrative is used to convey the complex connectedness that exists between class, ethnicity and masculinity. The story is of Ian, a successful academic who describes himself as Eurasian, and traces his development through parts of his childhood and into his professional career, using what Gough (1994) describes as a 'realistic fiction'. Relevant literature on masculinities and ethnicity is considered. There is some evidence to suggest that Ian has developed a fluid version of masculinity as a result of his Asian-Australian upbringing, and that he expresses different masculinities according to the social settings in which he finds himself. The paper concludes, just as Ian's story does, that masculinity interacts with class and ethnicity. This accords with Connell's (1995) caution that it is dangerous to think that there is a colored masculinity or a working class masculinity, and that the milieux of class and race need to be considered as well.

This research investigates the perceived risks and perceptions of visitor experiences associated with visitation to an ecological tourist destination. The research identified a significant consumption barrier which appeared to impact significantly and reflect juxtapositions with regard to tourists’ perceived (reflective) and lived (responsive) experiences with the tourist attraction. The conflicting reports of the “over-commercialisation” of the attraction and the enjoyment of the natural experience recorded at varying recollection periods, provided valuable insight into tourist consumption barriers to the establishment of relational bonds between tourists and ecological tourist attractions.

This study examines the applicability of brand orientation, and its drivers and impediments in the museum context. A multiple case study approach, with 12 institutions across two countries (United Kingdom and Australia) was carried out. Results suggest that brand orientation provides the cultural platform to retain the distinctiveness of the institution and build the symbolic representation required to remain competitive in the future.

This paper examines the implications for teacher educators of the dominant beliefs currently circulating within diverse Australian high schools about the (lack of) relationship between girls’ interests, girls’ careers, girls’ futures and the broad field of information technology. It identifies students' attitudes towards the content, relevance and general appeal of IT subjects to highlight the challenges for both teachers and teacher educators who may be seeking to address the issues associated with girls’ under representation in IT courses and also contribute to an ongoing project of gender based educational reform. Emphasis throughout the paper is on the persistence of discourses that continue to position girls and IT in opposition to each other and on the challenges of subverting these discourses through the introduction of new figurations (cf Rosi Braidotti, 1994) or transformative understandings of what it now means to be a female student, a female teacher, or a female IT user. The paper concludes by reflecting on the implications of these themes for teachers and teacher educators: particularly those with an on-going commitment to the broad field of educational justice.

In this article, the authors examine the way that sport acts as a contradictory and complex medium for masculinity making. The analysis illustrates the way that many discourses now unite in a cybernetic mix that offers both new opportunities and presents complex challenges for educators, coaches, and administrators. The method used combines a number of strategies and narratives pitched at the local, national, and international levels. The analysis is grounded in the game of football, although it is argued that the issues raised translate to other settings. At the same time, the authors demonstrate that large-scale, macro level analyses miss an important force working within the dynamics of masculinity making and sport, namely, peer group power. The analysis concludes with insights from a junior coach who has consciously "worked" the peer group dynamics to foster a strong sense of personal and group responsibility.

Lawulu fruit (Crysophylum roxberghi GDon) possess nutritional, medicinal and functional properties. However, it is less consumed due to its  characteristic off flavour. The present study was carried out to investigate the potential of utilizing lawulu fruit for isolation of pectin and to develop jam and fruit leather. Products were evaluated based on physico-chemical and sensory properties.

Pectin isolated fromf irm ripe lawuluf ruit using 0.1 M hydrochloric acid  followed by 96% ethanol precipitation yielded 7. 3% pectin on wet weight basis and 26.1% on dry weight basis. The isolated pectin contained 0.74% ash, 0.02% acetyl content and 7.85% methoxyl content with equivalent weight 993.5. These values were comparable with commercial high methoxyl pectin. In addition, Iawulu pectin at 1.5% concentration formed a gel within 12-14 min in the presence of 68% sucrose and 0.5% citric acid.

Jam was prepared by using Iawulu-pineapple ratio as 1:2, 1:1 and 2:1 respectively. The gel strength of jam (650 Brix and pH 3.1) at 0.35% commercial high methoxyl pectin was comparable with commercial mixed fruit jam. Sensory evaluation indicated a significant preference (p<.05) for jam containing lawulu-pineapple ratio of 1:2 and 1.1 respectively overthe ratio of 2:1. With increased lawulu percentage both yellowness and lightness of jam increased significantly (p<0.05).

Fruit leather was prepared by changing lawulu-pineapple ratio as 1:2, 1:1 and 2:1 respectively with 20% sucrose, 0.3% citric acid, 0.05% pectin and 100 ppm potassium metabisulphite followed by drying at 65±10C for 12-14 h. Sensory evaluation data revealed that changes in lawulu-pineapple ratio had no significant effect on taste, texture and overall quality of fruit leather.   However, significant preference (p<0.05) for colour was observed with increasing lawulu percentage. Both yellowness (b' value) and lightness (L'value) of fruit leather were sign[icantly increased (p<0.05) with increasing lawulu percentage.
