Optimal fuzzy traffic signal controller for an isolated intersection

  This paper aims at optimally adjusting a set of green times for traffic lights in a single intersection with the purpose of minimizing travel delay time and traffic congestion. Fuzzy logic system (FLS) is the method applied to develop the intelligent traffic timing controller. For this purpose, an intersection is considered and simulated as an intelligent agent that learns how to set green times in each cycle based on the traffic information. The FLS controller (FLC) uses genetic algorithm to tune its parameters during learning phase. Finally, The performance of the intelligent FLC is compared with the performance of a FLC with predefined parameters and three simple fixed-time controller. Simulation results indicate that intelligent FLC significantly reduces the total delay in the network compared to the fixed-time method and FLC with manual parameter setting.

RFID tag ownership transfer protocol for a closed loop system

In the RFID system a tag is attached to an object which might own by a number of people during its life cycle. As a result, the RFID system requires to transfer ownership of the tag. The ownership transfer has to protect privacy of current and new owner. There are number of ownership transfer protocol proposed to achieve secure ownership transfer. However, most of them are impractical or insecure to implement on current passive RFID tags. We are presenting an ownership transfer protocol using timer based shared secret for closed loop RFID systems. The protocol will ensure security and privacy of involved parties in the idle circumstances. Our comparison shows that the proposed protocol is more secure and practical than existing similar ones.

Study protocol: asking questions about alcohol in pregnancy (AQUA): a longitudinal cohort study of fetal effects of low to moderate alcohol exposure

Despite extensive research, a direct correlation between low to moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders has been elusive. Conflicting results are attributed to a lack of accurate and detailed data on PAE and incomplete information on contributing factors. The public health effectiveness of policies recommending complete abstinence from alcohol during pregnancy is challenged by the high frequency of unplanned pregnancies, where many women consumed some alcohol prior to pregnancy recognition. There is a need for research evidence emphasizing timing and dosage of PAE and its effects on child development.
