The unloading behavior was compared for three different steel grades: a dual-phase steel, a transformation-induced plasticity steel, and a twinning-induced plasticity steel. Steels that harden by phase transformation or deformation twinning exhibited a smaller component of microplastic strain during unloading and a smaller reduction in the chord modulus compared to the conventional hardening steel. As a result, unloading is closer to pure elastic unloading when the TRIP effect or TWIP effect is active.

Complex molecules have been successfully grafted onto the surface of unsized carbon fibre, a heterogeneous material which is a challenge to functionalise. The in situ generation of highly reactive phenyldiazo-species from their corresponding anilines was employed to achieve this task. The success of an initial proof-of-concept study (bearing a nitro moiety) supported by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and physical characterisation, led to the design and synthesis of a more complex compound possessing a pendant amine moiety which could theoretically react with an epoxide based resin. After attachment to unsized oxidised fibres, analysis by XPS of the resulting fibres (fluorine used as an XPS tag) indicated a marked difference in functionalisation success which was attributed to steric factors, shown to be critical in influencing the attachment of the phenyldiazo-intermediate to the carbon fibre surface. Analysis of key fibre performance parameters of these fibres showed no change in elastic modulus, strength, surface topography or microscopic roughness when compared to the control unsized oxidised fibres. The functionalised fibres did however show a large increase in coefficient of friction. Single fibre fragmentation tests indicated a marked increase in interfacial shear strength, which was attributed to the pendent amine functionalities interacting with the epoxy resin.

The multi-phase, metastable, and multi-scale (M3) constitution of a novel transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steel (Fe-0.17C-6.5Mn-1.1Al-0.22Mo-0.05Nb, wt pct) was designed through thermodynamic calculations combined with experimental analysis. In this study, Mo and Nb microalloying was used to control the fraction of retained austenite and its mechanical stability during tensile deformation and to improve the yield strength. Thermodynamic calculations were developed to determine the critical annealing temperature, at which a large fraction of retained austenite (~38 pct) would be obtained through the effects of solute enrichment. The experimental observation was in good agreement with the predicted results. According to the critical annealing temperature, such an ultrafine (<200 nm) M3, microstructure with optimum mechanical stability was successfully achieved. The results of this work demonstrated the superior performance with improved yield strength of 1020 to 1140 MPa and excellent ductility (>30 pct), as compared with other TRIP steels. Both angle-selective backscatter and electron backscatter diffraction techniques were employed to interpret the transformation from the deformed martensitic laths to the ultrafine austenite and ferrite duplex structure.

This study is dedicated to the quantification of latent hardening and its effect on the plasticity of pure hexagonal magnesium. To this end, discrete dislocation dynamics simulations are used to (1) extract latent hardening parameters coupling different slip systems, and to (2) assess the validity of two existing constitutive models linking slip system strength to dislocation densities on all slip systems. As hexagonal materials deform via activation of different slip modes, each with different mobilities and lattice friction stress, the effects of the latter on latent hardening evolution are also investigated. It is found that the multi-slip formulation proposed by Franciosi and Zaoui gives accurate predictions when multiple interactions are involved while the formulation suggested by Lavrentev and Pokhil systematically overestimates the flow stress. Similar to FCC materials, it is also found that collinear interactions potentially contribute the most to latent hardening. Basal/pyramidal c + a interactions are found to be very strong, while interactions involving second-order pyramidal c + a primary dislocations appear to be the weakest ones. Finally, the latent hardening parameters, extracted from the discrete dislocation dynamics simulations, are used in polycrystal simulations and the impact of finely accounting for latent hardening on predictions of the macroscopic anisotropic response is shown to be of significant importance.

The microstructure of transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) and dual phase (DP) multiphase steels after stamping of an industrial component at different strain levels was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The TRIP steel microstructure showed a more complex dislocation substructure of ferrite at different strain levels than DP steel. The deformation microstructure of the stamped parts was compared to the deformation microstructure in these complex steels for different "equivalent" tensile strains. It was found that the microstructures are similar only at high levels of strain (>10 pct) for both steels. © 2014 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International.

The multi-phase structure of a novel low-alloy transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel was designed through experimental analysis. The evolutions of both microstructure and mechanical properties during the two-stage heat treatment were analyzed. The phase transformations during the intercritical annealing and the isothermal bainitic transformation were investigated by means of dilatometry. It was shown that two types of C diffusion were detected during intercritical annealing and a complex microstructure was formed after heat treatment. The processing parameters were selected in such a way to obtain microstructures with systematically different volume fractions of ferrite, bainite and retained austenite. The volume fractions of ferrite and retained austenite were found to be two main factors controlling the ductility. Furthermore, a high volume fraction of C-rich retained austenite, which was stabilized at room temperature, was the origin of a TRIP effect. The resulting material demonstrates a significant improvement in the ultimate tensile strength (1077. MPa) with good uniform elongation (22.5%), as compared to conventional TRIP steels. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

The use of progressive resistance training (PRT) to improve gait and balance in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) is an emerging area of interest. However, the main effects of PRT on lower limb functions such as gait, balance, and leg strength in people with PD remain unclear. Therefore, the aim of the meta-analysis is to evaluate the evidence surrounding the use of PRT to improve gait and balance in people with PD. Five electronic databases, from inception to December 2014, were searched to identify the relevant studies. Data extraction was performed by two independent reviewers and methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro scale. Standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of fixed and random effects models were used to calculate the effect sizes between experimental and control groups and I (2) statistics were used to determine levels of heterogeneity. In total, seven studies were identified consisting of 172 participants (experimental n = 84; control n = 88). The pooled results showed a moderate but significant effect of PRT on leg strength (SMD 1.42, 95% CI 0.464-2.376); however, no significant effects were observed for gait speed (SMD 0.418, 95% CI -0.219 to 1.055). No significant effects were observed for balance measures included in this review. In conclusion, our results showed no discernable effect of PRT on gait and balance measures, although this is likely due to the lack of studies available. It may be suggested that PRT be performed in conjunction with balance or task-specific functional training to elicit greater lower limb functional benefits in people with PD.

Dual phase (DP) steels were modeled using 2D and 3D representative volume elements (RVE). Both the 2D and 3D models were generated using the Monte-Carlo-Potts method to represent the realistic microstructural details. In the 2D model, a balance between computational efficiency and required accuracy in truly representing heterogeneous microstructure was achieved. In the 3D model, a stochastic template was used to generate a model with high spatial fidelity. The 2D model proved to be efficient for characterization of the mechanical properties of a DP steel where the effect of phase distribution, morphology and strain partitioning was studied. In contrast, the current 3D modeling technique was inefficient and impractical due to significant time cost. It is shown that the newly proposed 2D model generation technique is versatile and sufficiently accurate to capture mechanical properties of steels with heterogeneous microstructure.

The roll forming process is increasingly used in the automotive industry for the manufacture of structural and crash components from Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS). Due to the high strength of UHSS (<1GPa) even small and commonly observed material property variations from coil to coil can result in significant changes in material yield and through that affect the final shape of the roll formed component. This requires the re-adjustment of tooling to compensate for shape defects and maintain part geometry resulting in costly downtimes of equipment. This paper presents a first step towards an in-line shape compensation method that based on the monitoring of roll load and torque allows for the estimation of shape defects and the subsequent re-adjustment of tooling for compensation. For this the effect of material property variation on common shape defects observed in the roll forming process as well as measurable process parameters such as roll load and torque needs to be understood. The effect of yield strength and material hardening on roll load and torque as well as longitudinal bow is investigated via experimental trials and numerical analysis. A regression analysis combined with Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) techniques is employed to establish the relationships between the process and material parameters and to determine their percentage influence on longitudinal bow, roll load and torque. The study will show that the level of longitudinal bow, one of the major shape defects observed in roll forming, can be estimated by variations in roll load and torque.

This thesis found that the application of non-invasive brain stimulation during resistance training enhances gains in muscular strength and activation. The findings shed light on the contribution of the nervous system in strength development, and can be used to improve rehabilitation techniques for conditions such as musculoskeletal injury and stroke.

AIM: Strength training of one limb results in a substantial increase in the strength of the untrained limb, however, it remains unknown what the corticospinal responses are following either eccentric or concentric strength training and how this relates to the cross-education of strength. The aim of this study was to determine if eccentric or concentric unilateral strength training differentially modulates corticospinal excitability, inhibition and the cross-transfer of strength. METHODS: Changes in contralateral (left limb) concentric strength, eccentric strength, motor-evoked potentials, short-interval intracortical inhibition and silent period durations were analyzed in groups of young adults who exercised the right wrist flexors with either eccentric (N=9) or concentric (N=9) contractions for 12 sessions over 4weeks. Control subjects (N=9) did not train. RESULTS: Following training, both groups exhibited a significant strength gain in the trained limb (concentric group increased concentric strength by 64% and eccentric group increased eccentric strength by 62%) and the extent of the cross-transfer of strength was 28% and 47% for the concentric and eccentric group, respectively, which was different between groups (P=0.031). Transcranial magnetic stimulation revealed that eccentric training reduced intracortical inhibition (37%), silent period duration (15-27%) and increased corticospinal excitability (51%) compared to concentric training for the untrained limb (P=0.033). There was no change in the control group. CONCLUSION: The results show that eccentric training uniquely modulates corticospinal excitability and inhibition of the untrained limb to a greater extent than concentric training. These findings suggest that unilateral eccentric contractions provide a greater stimulus in cross-education paradigms and should be an integral part of the rehabilitative process following unilateral injury to maximize the response.

BACKGROUND: Muscle strengthening exercises are promoted for building and maintaining a healthy skeleton. We aimed to investigate the relationship between muscle strength and areal bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip in women aged 26-97 years.

METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilises data from 863 women assessed for the Geelong Osteoporosis Study. Measures of hip flexor and abductor strength were made using a hand-held dynamometer (Nicholas Manual Muscle Tester). The maximal measure from three trials on each leg was used for analyses. BMD was measured at the hip using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA; Lunar DPX-L). Total lean mass, body fat mass and appendicular lean mass were determined from whole body DXA scans. Linear regression techniques were used with muscle strength as the independent variable and BMD as the dependent variable. Models were adjusted for age and indices of body composition.

RESULTS: Measures of age-adjusted hip flexor strength and hip abductor strength were positively associated with total hip BMD. For each standard deviation (SD) increase in hip flexor strength, the increase in mean total hip BMD (SD) was 10.4 % (p = 0.009). A similar pattern was observed for hip abductor strength, with an increase in mean total hip BMD of 22.8 % (p = 0.025). All associations between hip muscle strength and total hip BMD were independent of height, but were nullified after adjusting for appendicular lean mass or total lean mass.

CONCLUSIONS: There was a positive association observed between muscle strength and BMD at the hip. However, this association was explained by measures of lean mass.

BACKGROUND: Participant adoption and maintenance is a major challenge in strength training (ST) programs in the community-setting. In adults who were overweight or with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), the aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a standard ST program (SST) to an enhanced program (EST) on the adoption and maintenance of ST and cardio-metabolic risk factors and muscle strength. METHODS: A 12-month cluster-randomized controlled trial consisting of a 6-month adoption phase followed by a 6-month maintenance phase. In 2008-2009, men and women aged 40-75 years (n = 318) with T2DM (n = 117) or a BMI >25 (n = 201) who had not participated in ST previously were randomized into either a SST or an EST program (which included additional motivationally-tailored behavioral counselling). Adoption and maintenance were defined as undertaking ≥ 3 weekly gym-based exercise sessions during the first 6-months and from 6-12 months respectively and were assessed using a modified version of the CHAMPS (Community Healthy Activity Models Program for Seniors) instrument. RESULTS: Relative to the SST group, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) of adopting ST for all participants in the EST group was 3.3 (95 % CI 1.2 to 9.4). In stratified analyses including only those with T2DM, relative to the SST group, the adjusted OR of adopting ST in the EST group was 8.2 (95 % CI 1.5-45.5). No significant between-group differences were observed for maintenance of ST in either pooled or stratified analyses. In those with T2DM, there was a significant reduction in HbA1c in the EST compared to SST group during the adoption phase (net difference, -0.13 % [-0.26 to -0.01]), which persisted after 12-months (-0.17 % [-0.3 to -0.05]). CONCLUSIONS: A behaviorally-focused community-based EST intervention was more effective than a SST program for the adoption of ST in adults with excess weight or T2DM and led to greater improvements in glycemic control in those with T2DM.
