From music to silence: an exploration of music-thanatology vigils at end of life

Research in Australia into use of music-thanatology, evaluating provision of harp music in vigils with palliative care patients in a hospice. The concept of music-thanatology is outlined, and the findings of the study in alleviating suffering and creating tranquil environments are reported.

The adoption of web services based architectures in Australian organisations : an exploratory study

This exploratory research study contributes to answering two related research questions. First it identifies the key influences that seem to be driving and constraining the adoption of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and XML/Web Services and secondly it adduces some evidence to confirm that these influences significantly differ from those found by IS researchers in the adoption of other innovations in organisations. The key drivers were found to include improved agility, reuse and [open standards enabled] interoperability. None of these map easily to factors identified in previous Diffusion of Innovations (DOI) related IS research. In spite of standards being originally seen as strengths, it was found that the lack of IT industry agreement on the next generation of Web Services standards is now emerging as a perceived constraint. Variants of the ‘network effect’ such as partner push and client drag were also found to be influential.

Case Study from Australia Post : towards the online economy with netPOS

Examines how the "old economy" of the traditional postal service has changed over time and how Australia Post is adapting to the many pressures that threaten its existence. With increasing adoption of e-mail as a means of communication, increased competition as a result of deregulation, and the strain of servicing a country with huge distances between inhabited locations and low population density, Australia Post needed to find a solution that would ensure the long-term viability of its business. The retail sector, with its 4,000-plus post office outlets, processed many different types of across-the-counter financial transactions, including banking transactions and utility payments. A project team was established to address the fundamental issue of how to structure the IT infrastructure to enable retail outlets to generate future revenue flows for Post. However, having established the Internet-based infrastructure to connect the extensive chain of retail outlets, the question was whether this new infrastructure would successfully entice third parties to buy into the model.
