Successful ageing : perceptions of adults aged between 70 and 101 years

In this research, content analysis was employed to investigate older adults' perceptions of successful aging and the relationship of these perceptions to definitions given in the literature to date. Participants were 18 males and 42 females between the ages of 70 and 101 years. Analyses revealed older adults mentioned only 1 or 2 criteria of successful aging if asked for a definition; however, when prompted, they rated almost all the criteria emerging from the literature as highly important. Participants reported adjusting to the situations they were in by compensating for losses that occurred and selecting activities that best suited their capabilities. Overall, older adults' perceptions of successful aging were similar to aspects identified in the literature. Not all aspects, however, were seen as important by all participants, and only low to moderate correlations were found between some aspects of successful aging. (Contains 3 figures and 4 tables.)

Factors associated with successful ageing

This research explored the extent to which adaptability, self-acceptance, religiosity, attitudes to ageing, and flexibility are associated with seven criteria of successful ageing (health, activity, life satisfaction, personal growth, positive relationships, autonomy, and purpose in life). Also considered was the level of importance participants assigned to these criteria. The participants were 200 females and 140 males aged between 70 and 95 years. Structural equation modelling was employed to determine significant paths between the variables. Direct and mediating effects of older adults’ importance ratings for different criteria of successful ageing were analysed. The main factors associated with successful ageing were self-acceptance and flexibility, both of which contributed significantly to almost all of the criteria examined. Importance ratings did not play a mediating role. It was concluded that self-acceptance and flexibility might enhance the process of successful ageing and could be targeted in programmes that assist older adults to adjust to life changes.

Some clues about story in crime fiction

I want to begin my talk at this colloquium by saying from the start that I am outclassed here. I have published one crime novel, and while I have used some aspects of the crime genre in my current novel - notably a kind of mystery and a movement towards resolution - I would not classify myself as an expert. What I do know about is the teaching of writing, the value of plot and the ever-important idea of story. Story and aspects of plot are vital ingredients in crime fiction and so I come to the task of writing this paper searching for more clues about how to write story in crime fiction.

A question of genre : de-mystifying the exegesis

In this paper I wish to draw together two on-oing debates which are being played out, at least in part, in TEXT. These debates concern the nature of research for the discipline of Creative Writing and those dealing with problems associated with awarding and assessing research higher degrees - MAs, MA(Hons), MPhils and PhDs. In particular I wish to suggest that the combination of these two debates sheds considerable light on the nature and role of the research higher degree's exegesis which accompanies the creative product.

Staying connected : the lived experiences of volunteers and older adults

Many housebound older adults lack meaningful social relationships. In this study we explore the phenomenon of social connectedness in the volunteer-older adult relationship through the experiences of frail and isolated older adults and volunteers. We conceptualise this relationship as a journey whereby each traveller plays an active role in its direction and outcome. The emergent phenomenological essence of social connectedness from these dyad’s narratives provides meaning for both differences and similarities into the way the construct is conceptualised. When volunteers maintain the boundaries of the relationship through structured conversation and visits, it is described as friendly. Transgressing the boundaries involves doing extra for the elder and is both a function of the dyad’s compatibility, and the volunteer’s sense of ongoing agency and lack of elder expectations. The sense of social connectedness inherent in these relationships often feels like that of friendship or family, and these relationships are perceived as meaningful and close for both parties. Social connectedness in family-like relationships is a function of the playing out of an otherwise missing family role. However, if volunteer volition is compromised, this results in feelings of obligation and responsibility, similar to the dynamic between blood relatives. Participants’ narratives suggest that when the boundaries of the relationship are mutually negotiated, this serves to strengthen the relationship’s socioemotional quality, and potential for the continuity of the unique sense of social connectedness that has already been established.

Health implications of body size perception and weight tolerance in older adults

Obesity is a well-recognized risk factor for Type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In this study a high percentage of older adults were either overweight or obese. The aims were to assess older adults' tolerance for excess weight, and to compare self-perceptions of an acceptable weight with national guidelines. Participants were 76 males and females aged between 65 and 97 years. Results indicated that 60 per cent accurately identified their own body size. Further, participants were more tolerant of excess weight in males compared to females, regardless of age. It was concluded that this cohort remains vulnerable to weight-related illnesses.

The novel explores the journey towards completion for two women and, through its concerns and structure, plays with the notion of research in the creative arts. The exegesis comments upon the concerns of the novel, and the writing and research processes.

Exploration of the multifaceted dimensions of successful ageing

This thesis explored older adults' experiences of successful ageing. Self-acceptance, attitudes to ageing, and flexibility emerged as influencing factors. Acceptance was described as a personal struggle and underpinned criteria of successful ageing. Overall, ageing successfully seems anchored in our need to become integrated and find meaning in life.

Tolerance of larger body sizes by young adults living in Australia and Hawaii

Identifying the barriers to achieving an appropriate body size is important for health. This study investigated young adults' tolerance of excess weight in other adults. Participants were 172 students (65 male, 107 female) with a mean age of 22.24 years (SD = 1.61). Half the participants resided in Australia, and half in Hawaii. Students from both countries were found to be tolerant of body sizes larger than those recommended for good health. These results help inform our understanding of the factors that may influence weight gain, and have important implications for the worldwide obesity problem and related health issues.
