In a series of 6 experiments, two hypotheses were tested: that nominal heading perception is determined by the relative motion of images of objects positioned at different depths (R. F. Wang & J. E. Cutting 1999) and that static depth information contributes to this determination. By manipulating static depth information while holding retinal-image motion constant during  simulated self-movement, the authors found that static depth information played a role in determining perceived heading. Some support was also found for the involvement of R. F. Wang and J. E. Cutting’s (1999) categories of object-image relative motion in determining perceived heading. However, results suggested an unexpected functional dominance of information about heading relative to apparently near objects.

A general relationship between the kinetics of dynamic and static recrystallization is developed. It is predicted that conventional dynamic recrystallization will occur whenever the deformation time exceeds the adjusted start time for static recrystallization. This approach is verified using data for austenite and lead. It is then applied to current and previous work on ferrite. The model provides support for the contention that conventional dynamic recrystallization occurs in low carbon ferrite if deformation is carried out at high temperatures and low strain rates. In the present work, which was carried out at 700 °C, evidence for dynamic recrystallization was observed for strain rates less than around 0.01 s−1. At higher strain rates, the model predicts a critical strain for the onset of dynamic recrystallization that exceeds the critical strain for the beginning of the recovery steady-state region. While the model allows dynamic recrystallization to begin in this region, the critical strain for its onset is expected to increase rapidly with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature once steady state has been reached.

Grain refinement during and after hot isothermal deformation of a medium carbon steel has been investigated. The average austenite grain size decreased with an increase in strain for the hot deformed and recrystallised material, with refinement extending beyond the strain for the peak stress. A window of strain that corresponds to transition from classical static to metadynamic recrystallisation was observed in respect to the recrystallised material. Within this post-dynamic transition window the strain at which strain independent softening occurs was different for different volume fractions of the recrystallised material. This led to a new terminology corresponding to initiation of strain independent softening. For the alloy of this study, strain independent softening for the start of post-deformation recrystallisation occurred near the strain to the peak stress. The strain corresponding to complete metadynamic recrystallisation, which was defined as when all levels of recrystallisation were strain independent, was much greater than the strain for the peak stress.

A rapid method has been developed to determine recrystallization kinetics of Nb microalloyed steels by interrupted hot torsion test. The softening behaviour was achieved as a function of different processing parameters. The method clearly identified three regions, where the strain dependency of the recrystallization rate varied. Firstly, at large strains the rate of recrystallization was not a function of strain; this is generally ascribed to metadynamic recrystallization. At lower strains the time to 50% recrystallization showed a power low relationship with strain, characteristic of static recrystallization. A further break point exists on the time for 50% softening curve when strain induced precipitation occurs in the material. The onset of strain induced precipitation was at strains below the strain to the peak stress at temperatures below 900°C. The experimental results were used to estimate the time for 50% softening and to anticipate the onset of the strain induced precipitation for the alloy of this study. Grain refinement of the recrystallized austenite continued to strains significantly beyond the peak stress and beyond the static to metadynamic recrystallization rate transition.

A rapid method was used to identify kinetics of the recrystallization for two IF (Interstitial Free) steels which have different phosphorous and boron contents. The static and metadynamic softening behaviour of the materials for a range of strain rates and temperatures were quantified. The critical strain for initiation of strain independent softening was estimated for the IF steels in respect to the time for 50 percent softening after deformation. The results showed that the strain for the initiation of strain independent softening (often referred to as metadynamic recrystallization) varies with the Zener Hollomon parameter. Classic static recrystallization was observed at strains below the strain independent softening for all processing conditions and the strain rate had a strong effect on the time for strain independent softening. Results also revealed that static and metadynamic recrystallization was delayed owing to the phosphorous and boron alloying elements. Hence, the large strain at above no-recrystallization temperature may be required for the early stage of Finishing Stands Unit (FSU) in hot strip rolling mills to initiate austenite grain refinement of phosphorous and boron added IF steels.

A novel approach was used to produce an ultrafine grain structure in low carbon steels with a wide range of hardenability. This included warm deformation of supercooled austenite followed by reheating in the austenite region and cooling (RHA). The ultrafine ferrite structure was independent of steel composition. However, the mechanism of ferrite refinement hanged with the steel quench hardenability. In a relatively low hardenable steel, the ultrafine structure was produced through dynamic strain-induced transformation, whereas the ferrite refinement was formed by static transformation in steels with high quench hardenability. The use of a model Ni–30Fe austenitic alloy revealed that the deformation temperature has a strong effect on the nature of the intragranular defects. There was a transition temperature below which the cell dislocation structure changed to laminar microbands. It appears that the extreme refinement of ferrite is due to the formation of extensive high angle intragranular defects at these low deformation temperatures that then act as sites for static transformation.

This research aims at improving our understanding of backfilling job scheduling algorithms. The most frequently used algorithm, EASY-backfilling, was selected for a performance evaluation by scheduling static workloads of parallel jobs on a computer cluster. To achieve the aim, we have developed a batch job scheduler for Linux clusters, implemented several scheduling algorithms including ARCA and EASY-Backfilling, and carried out their performance evaluation by running well known MPI applications on a real cluster. Our performance evaluation carried out for EASY-Backfilling serves two purposes. First, the performance results obtained from our evaluation can be used to validate other researcherspsila results generated by simulation, and second, the methodology used in our evaluation has alleviated many problems existed in the simulations presented in the current literature.

This study revisits the capital structure theory and test Pecking Order Hypothesis (POH) and Static Order Trade-off theory (STOT) using Malaysian Listed firms over a period from 1999 to 2002. The evidence from pecking order model suggests that the internal fund deficiency is the most important determinant that possibly explains the issuance of new debt in Malaysian capital market despite the lower predicting power.  While static trade off-model is not fit to explain the issuance of new debt issue in Malaysian capital market. This is an interesting findings that confirm the fact that Malaysian firms do not too much care about tax-shield benefit derive from employ both debt and non-debt tax-shield. The finn's size, which is used to neutralize the size effect, appears to provide some explanation for the variation in its capital structure policy choice; however asset structure and growth no evidence of static-order-trade-off is observed in Malaysian capital market.

The main aim of this work is application of the developed cellular automata (CA) model to investigate influence of the micro shear bands that are present in the heavily deformed material on the static recrystallization. This initial work is the results of recent experimental analyses indicating that the micro shear bands are preferred sites for nucleation of the recrystallization. The procedure of creation of the initial microstructure with features such as grains and micro shear bands as well as basis of the developed CA code for the static recrystallization are also presented in the paper. Finally, the simulation results obtained from different recrystallization temperatures for the microstructures with and without micro shear bands are compared with each other and differences are discussed.

This paper presents experimental and computational results obtained on the Ford Barra 190 4.0 litres I6 gasoline engine and on the Ford Falcon car equipped with this engine. Measurements of steady engine performance, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions were first collected using an automated test facility for a wide range of cam and spark timings vs. throttle position and engine speed. Simulations were performed for a significant number of measured operating points at full and part load by using a coupled Gamma Technologies GT-POWER/GT-COOL engine model for gas exchange, combustion and heat transfer. The fluid model was made up of intake and exhaust systems, oil circuit, coolant circuit and radiator cooling air circuit. The thermal model was made up of finite element components for cylinder head, cylinder, piston, valves and ports and wall thermal masses for pipes. The model was validated versus measured steady state air and fuel flow rates, cylinder pressure parameters, indicated and brake mean effective pressures, and temperature of metal, oil and coolant in selected locations. Computational results agree well with experiments, demonstrating the ability of the approach to produce fairly accurate steady state maps of BMEP and BSFC, as well as to optimize engine operation changing geometry, throttle position, cam and spark timing. Measurements of the transient performance and fuel consumption of the full vehicle were then collected over the NEDC cycle. Simulations were performed by using a coupled Gamma Technologies GT-POWER/GT-COOL/GT-DRIVE model for instantaneous engine gas exchange, combustion and heat transfer and vehicle motion. The full vehicle model is made up of transmission, driveshaft, axles, and car components and the previous engine model. The model was validated with measured fuel flow rates through the engine, engine throttle position, and engine speed and oil and coolant temperatures in selected locations. Instantaneous engine states following a time dependent demand for torque and speed differ from those obtained by interpolating steady state maps of BSFC vs. BMEP and speed. Computational results agree well with experiments, demonstrating the utility of the approach in providing a more accurate prediction of the fuel consumption over test cycles.

A simple series of test was developed to highlight and compare the difference between the static strain induced transformation (SSIT) and the dynamic strain induced transformation (DSIT) mechanism in grain refinement and also to investigate the origin of the difference between the two mechanisms. The results showed that while the SSIT sets up a two-dimensional impingement among the ferrite grains, it cannot avoid their coarsening (normal growth). However, the DSIT forms a group of grains with a three-dimensional impingement which does not coarsen and maintains their fine size throughout the transformation, thereby, reduces the final average grain size.
