The present work aims at finding a relationship between kinetic models of thermal degradation process with the physiochemical structure of epoxy-clay nanocomposites in order to understand its service temperature. In this work, two different types of modified clays, including clay modified with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and a commercial organoclay, were covalently and non-covalently incorporated into epoxy matrix, respectively. The effect of different concentrations of silanized clay on thermal behaviour of epoxy nanocomposites were first investigated in order to choose the optimum clay concentration. Afterwards, thermal characteristics of the degradation process of epoxy nanocomposites were obtained by TGA analysis and the results were employed to determine the kinetic parameters using model-free isoconversional and model-fitting methods. The obtained kinetic parameters were used to model the entire degradation process. The results showed that the incorporation of the different modified clay into epoxy matrix change the mathematical model of the degradation process, associating with different orientations of clay into epoxy matrix confirming by XRD results. The obtained models for each epoxy nanocomposite systems were used to investigate the dependence of degradation rate and degradation time on temperature and conversion degree. Our results provide an explanation as to how the life time of epoxy and its nanocomposites change in a wide range of operating temperatures as a result of their structural changes.

Binary and ternary nanocomposites were produced by incorporating, via melt compounding, two types of octa-and dodecaphenyl substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), montmorillonite (MMT), and combinations of POSS with MMT into nylon 6. The tensile, flexural, and dynamic thermo-mechanical properties of these materials were characterized and their structure-property relationships discussed. The results show that the losses in ductility and toughness experienced after inclusion of MMT into nylon 6 can be balanced out by co-mixing MMT with the dodecaphenyl- POSS to produce a ternary nanocomposite. This trend however was less pronounced in the ternary MMT/octaphenyl-POSS system. Analysis of the microstructure organization in these materials using XRD and SEM sheds some light on understanding the differences in behavior. Both types of POSS particles mixed alone in nylon 6 were found to be polydisperse (500 nm to a few microns in size) and locally aggregated, yielding materials with similar mechanical performance. The co-mixing of MMT with the octaphenyl- POSS served to break down the POSS crystal aggregates, enhancing their micro-mechanical reinforcing action. On the other hand, the POSS crystals were not affected in the MMT/dodecaphenyl-POSS system, which led to improving their toughening ability.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposites were prepared by melt-mixing. The dispersion of clay platelets and rheology of nanocomposites were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and rheometric mechanical spectrometer (RMS). The transformation of α to β and γ phase in PVDF was induced by the addition of nanoclay and subsequently the isothermal crystallization kinetics of neat PVDF and its nanocomposite have been investigated. The interaction between clay nanofillers and PVDF macromolecular chains induced the change of conformation from trans-gauche to all-trans crystal structure in PVDF segment. The isothermal crystallization of PVDF/clay nanocomposites was carried out by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) technique. The influence of clay platelets on nucleation crystallization rate and Avrami exponent were studied. PVDF/clay nanocomposite showed higher crystallization rate indicating that nanoclay has acted as an effective nucleation agent. This nucleation effect of nanoclay increased the Avrami exponent and decreased the degree of crystallinity. © 2014 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), either having nitrate counter anions or intercalated with organic molecules, have been for the first time partially exfoliated in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to form a transparent suspension. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images showed that both the lateral size and the thickness of the LDH nanoplatelets were decreased after the exfoliation. The organic-LDHs maintained their intercalation characteristics, i.e. the thermal stability improvement of the incorporated organic anions, after the exfoliation in DMSO. Transparent ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) nanocomposite films containing partially exfoliated LDHs intercalated with UV absorbers were prepared using DMSO as the processing solvent. As the first reported example of a highly transparent LDH/polymer composite, the obtained composite film had a visible light transmittance of 90% (comparable to that of the pure matrix), was flexible and exhibited an excellent UV-shielding capability and thermal stability.

By reaction of Zn(CH3COO)2 with p,p′-diphenylmethylenediphosphinic acid in water a new inorganic–organic polymeric hybrid of formula [Zn(CH2(P(Ph)O2)2)] has been synthesized and completely characterized. The X-ray analysis established that the structure consists of 2D-layered polymeric array, the 2D-sheets being built up through strong covalent linkages between the zinc metal and the oxygen donors of the phenylphosphinate ligand. The 2D-layers, which are featuring a mesh-net fashion, present voids of various dimensionality, up to 24-membered rings. The organic parts of the hybrid ligand, namely the phenyl rings, are shielding the inorganic skeleton of the layers, preventing the propagation of the polymer in the third dimension. No water molecules are present in the lattice, both of coordination and crystallization. Crystal data are: monoclinic, P21Ic, a=11.840(2), b=9.646(9), c=12.516(5) Å, β=95.03(2), V=1423.9(15) Å3, Z=4. The solid material has been characterized by 31P MAS NMR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis.

Technical textiles, based on advanced polymeric materials, are an important segment of the synthetic textile market. This area has seen considerable growth in recent times, now accounting for almost 25% of all manufactured synthetic fibres, and has driven the recent development of a range of specialist high performance polymer fibres that are stronger, lighter or have improved heat and fire resistance. However, the increasing size of the market has highlighted the need for materials that have improved performance whilst maintaining low manufacturing costs. These factors have resulted in a change in how new specialty fibres are developed and the emphasis in this field is now on the upgrading or improving of the properties of commodity (conventional) fibres by modifying their properties to suit specific applications.

This paper will describe our work on preparing novel polymer nanocomposite fibres by the addition of clay nanoparticles during melt extrusion. The effect of the nanoparticles on the processing of the fibres and the result on the physical morphology and mechanical properties will be described.

Nanoparticies have been widely used to enhance the properties of natural rubber (NR). In the present paper a novel nanocomposite was developed by blending nano-ZnO slurry with prevulcanized NR latex, and the thermal degradation process of pure NR and NR/ZnO nanocomposites with different nano-ZnO loading was studied with a Perkin Elemer TGA-7 thermogravimetric analyzer. The thermal degradation parameters of NR/ZnO (2 parts ZnO per hundred dlY rubber) at different heating rates (Bs) were studied. The results show that the thermal degradation of pure NR and NR/ZnO nanocomposites in nitrogen is a one-step reaction. The degradation temperatures of NR/ZnO nanocomposite increase with an increasing B. The peak height (Rp) on the differential thermogravimetric curve increases with the increase of B. The degradation rates are not affected significantly by B, and the average values of thermal degradation rate Cp and Cf are 44.42 % and 81.04 %, respectively. The thermal degradation kinetic parameters are calculated with Ozawa-Flynn-Wall method. The activation energy (E) and the frequency factor (A) vary with ecomposition degree, and can be divided into three phases corresponding to the volatilization of low-molecular-weight materials, the thermal degradation ofNR main chains and the decomposition of residual carbon.

Nonisothermal crystallization behaviors of PVA and poly (vinyl alcohol) and Silica (PVA/SiO2) nanocomposites prepared via a self-assembly monolayer (SAM) technique are investigated in this study. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is used to measure the crystallization temperature and enthalpy of PVA and nanocomposites in nitrogen at various cooling rate. The results show that the degree of crystallinity of PVA and nanocomposites decreases when the SiO2 content increases but increases with an increasing cooling rate. The peak crystallization temperature decreases with an increasing cooling rate.

A novel natural rubber/silica (NR/SiO2) nanocomposite with a SiO2 loading of 4 wt% is developed by incorporating latex compounding with self-assembly techniques. The SiO2 nanoparticles are homogenouslydistributed throughout the NR matrix as spherical nano-clusters with an average size of 75 nm. In comparison with the host NR, the thermal resistance of the nanocomposite is significantly improved. The degradation temperatures (T), reaction activation energy(E), and reaction order (n) of the nanocomposite are markedly higher than those of the pure NR, due to significant retardant effect of the SiO2 nanoparticles.
