An extensive experimental and simulation study is carried out in conventional magnetorheological fluids formulated by dispersion of mixtures of carbonyl iron particles having different sizes in Newtonian carriers. Apparent yield stress data are reported for a wide range of polydispersity indexes (PDI) from PDI = 1.63 to PDI = 3.31, which for a log-normal distribution corresponds to the standard deviation ranging from to . These results demonstrate that the effect of polydispersity is negligible in this range in spite of exhibiting very different microstructures. Experimental data in the magnetic saturation regime are in quantitative good agreement with particle-level simulations under the assumption of dipolar magnetostatic forces. The insensitivity of the yield stresses to the polydispersity can be understood from the interplay between the particle cluster size distribution and the packing density of particles inside the clusters.

From the beginning, the world of game-playing by machine has been fortunate in attracting contributions from the leading names of computer science. Charles Babbage, Konrad Zuse, Claude Shannon, Alan Turing, John von Neumann, John McCarthy, Alan Newell, Herb Simon and Ken Thompson all come to mind, and each reader will wish to add to this list. Recently, the Journal has saluted both Claude Shannon and Herb Simon. Ken’s retirement from Lucent Technologies’ Bell Labs to the start-up Entrisphere is also a good moment for reflection.

Truly continuous solid-state fermentations with operating times of 2-3 weeks were conducted in a prototype bioreactor for the production of fungal (Penicillium glabrum) tannase from a tannin-containing model substrate. Substantial quantities of the enzyme were synthesized throughout the operating periods and (imperfect) steady-state conditions seemed to be achieved soon after start-up of the fermentations. This demonstrated for the first time the possibility of conducting solid-state fermentations in the continuous mode and with a constant noninoculated feed. The operating variables and fermentation conditions in the bioreactor were sufficiently well predicted for the basic reinoculation concept to succeed. However, an incomplete understanding of the microbial mechanisms, the experimental system, and their interaction indicated the need for more research in this novel area of solid-state fermentation. Industrial robotic manipulators can be found in most factories today. Their tasks are accomplished through actively moving, placing and assembling parts. This movement is facilitated by actuators that apply a torque in response to a command signal. The presence of friction and possibly backlash have instigated the development of sophisticated compensation and control methods in order to achieve the desired performance may that be accurate motion tracking, fast movement or in fact contact with the environment. This thesis presents a dual drive actuator design that is capable of physically linearising friction and hence eliminating the need for complex compensation algorithms. A number of mathematical models are derived that allow for the simulation of the actuator dynamics. The actuator may be constructed using geared dc motors, in which case the benefits of torque magnification is retained whilst the increased non-linear friction effects are also linearised. An additional benefit of the actuator is the high quality, low latency output position signal provided by the differencing of the two drive positions. Due to this and the linearised nature of friction, the actuator is well suited for low velocity, stop-start applications, micro-manipulation and even in hard-contact tasks. There are, however, disadvantages to its design. When idle, the device uses power whilst many other, single drive actuators do not. Also the complexity of the models mean that parameterisation is difficult. Management of start-up conditions still pose a challenge.

Start-up shear rheology is a standard experiment used for characterizing polymer flow, and to test various models of polymer dynamics. A rich phenomenology is developed for behavior of entangled monodisperse linear polymers in such tests, documenting shear stress overshoots as a function of shear rates and molecular weights. A tube theory does a reasonable qualitative job at describing these phenomena, although it involves several drastic approximations and the agreement can be fortuitous. Recently, Lu and coworkers published several papers [e.g. Lu {\it et al.} {\it ACS Macro Lett}. 2014, 3, 569-573] reporting results from molecular dynamics simulations of linear entangled polymers, which contradict both theory and experiment. Based on these observations, they made very serious conclusions about the tube theory, which seem to be premature. In this letter, we repeat simulations of Lu {\it et al.} and systematically show that neither their simulation results, nor their comparison with theory are confirmed.

This study draws on the institutional and regional entrepreneurship literature to develop a conceptual framework that analyses the impact of higher education institutions on entrepreneurial dynamics. It is used to examine the cities of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) during the period 1995–2008. Extending the multi-pillar institutional concept, it is found that higher education institutions play a prominent role in fostering entrepreneurial dynamics in CIS cities through multiple channels, including human capital development, cultivating a positive attitude towards entrepreneurship, affecting the perceptions of the knowledge and skills needed to start up a successful business, and knowledge spillovers.

A quarter of a century of daily rainfall data from the Global Telecommunications System are used to define the temporal and spatial variability of the start of the wet season over Africa and surrounding extreme south of Europe and parts of the Middle East. From 1978 to 2002, the start of the wet season arrived later in the year for the majority of the region, as time progressed. In some parts of the continent, there was an annual increase in the start date of up to 4 days per year. On average, the start of the wet season arrived 9–21 days later from 1978 to 2002, depending on the threshold used to define the start of the rains (varying from 10–30 mm over 2 days, with no dry period in the following 10 days). It is noted that the inter-annual variability of the start of the wet season is high with the range of start dates varying on average from 116 to 142 days dependent on the threshold used to determine the start date. These results may have important implications for agriculturists on all levels (from the individual farmer to those responsible for regional food supply), as knowledge of potential future climate changes starts to play an increasingly important role in the agricultural decision-making process, such as sowing and harvesting times.
