Recent years have seen an increasing number of academics attempt to write more process-oriented and 'nonrepresentational' accounts of landscape. Drawing upon this literature, I discuss a number of the movements, materialities, and practices entailed in constructing England's M1 motorway in the late 1950s. The performances, movements and durability of a diverse range of things-including earth-moving machines, public relations brochures, maps, helicopters, senior engineers, aggregate and labourers-are shown to be important to the construction and ordering of the motorway and spaces of the construction company in different times and spaces, with people's experiences or understandings of construction, both now and in the past, emerging through memories, talk and embodied encounters with architectures, texts and artefacts which are assembled, circulated and/or archived. Aerial perspectives assumed a prominent role in depictions of construction, while journalists and engineers frequently drew upon a military vocabulary and alluded to the military nature of the project when discussing the motorway. The paper looks at the setting up of media services for British Army forces engaged in Operation Granby, the British participation in Operation Desert Storm, the liberation of Kuwait from Iraqi occupation in 1991. In particular, the piece focuses on the creation of a force newspaper and radio station. There is far more involved in the organisation of modern war than simply battles themselves One aspect is the importance of creating and maintaining morale, which can be achieved in a number of ways, especially by keeping troops informed of their progress, purpose and mission as operations unfold. This was specifically recognised by commanders in the Gulf War, who ensured the smooth transmission of information by the provision of media services for forces personnel throughout the War. Here S J Anglim concentrates on the difficulties inherent in setting up and running the Gulf Forces newspaper, The Sandy Times, a Radio service and producing video reviews, all of which played their part in ensunng high morale. He concludes that there are lessons to be learnt and implemented for the success of any future conflicts.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Terrestrial plant test is often used for the ecological risk assessment of contaminated land. However, its origins in plant protection product testing mean that the species recommended in the OECD guidelines are unlikely to occur on contaminated land. Six alternative species were tested on contaminated soils from a former Zn smelter and a metal fragmentizer with elevated concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn. The response of the alternative species was compared to two species recommended by the OECD; Lolium perenne (perennial ryegrass) and Trifolium pratense (red clover). Urtica dioica (stinging nettle) and Poa annua (annual meadow-grass) had low emergence rates in the control soil so may be considered unsuitable. Festuca rubra (chewings fescue), Holcus lanatus (Yorkshire fog), Senecio vulgaris (common groundsel), and Verbascum thapsus (great mullein) offer good alternatives to the OECD species. In particular, H. lanatus and S. vulgaris were more sensitive to the soils with moderate concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn than the OECD species.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concepts of intelligent buildings (IBs), and the opportunities offered by the application of computer-aided facilities management (CAFM) systems. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper definitions of IBs are investigated, particularly definitions that are embracing open standards for effective operational change, using a questionnaire survey. The survey further investigated the extension of CAFM to IBs concepts and the opportunities that such integrated systems will provide to facilities management (FM) professionals. Findings – The results showed variation in the understanding of the concept of IBs and the application of CAFM. The survey showed that 46 per cent of respondents use a CAFM system with a majority agreeing on the potential of CAFM in delivery of effective facilities. Research limitations/implications – The questionnaire survey results are limited to the views of the respondents within the context of FM in the UK. Practical implications – Following on the many definitions of an IB does not necessarily lead to technologies of equipment that conform to an open standard. This open standard and documentation of systems produced by vendors is the key to integrating CAFM with other building management systems (BMS) and further harnessing the application of CAFM for IBs. Originality/value – The paper gives experience-based suggestions for both demand and supply sides of the service procurement to gain the feasible benefits and avoid the currently hindering obstacles, as the paper provides insight to the current and future tools for the mobile aspects of FM. The findings are relevant for service providers and operators as well.

Recent developments in the UK concerning the reception of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) have indicated that, as it currently stands, DVB-T receivers may not be sufficient to maintain adequate quality of digital picture information to the consumer. There are many possible reasons why such large errors are being introduced into the system preventing reception failure. It has been suggested that one possibility is that the assumptions concerning the immunity to multipath that Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (COFDM) is expected to have, may not be entirely accurate. Previous research has shown that multipath can indeed have an impact on a DVB-T receiver performance. In the UK, proposals have been made to change the modulation from 64-QAM to 16-QAM to improve the immunity to multipath, but this paper demonstrates that the 16-QAM performance may again not be sufficient. To this end, this paper presents a deterministic approach to equalization such that a 64-QAM receiver with the simple equalizer presented in this paper has the same order of MPEG-2 BER performance as that to a 16-QAM receiver without equalization. Thus, alleviating the requirement in the broadcasters to migrate from 64-QAM to 16-QAM Of course, by adding the equalizer to a 16-QAM receiver then the BER is also further improved and thus creating one more step to satisfying the consumers(1).

IPLV overall coefficient, presented by Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) of America, shows running/operation status of air-conditioning system host only. For overall operation coefficient, logical solution has not been developed, to reflect the whole air-conditioning system under part load. In this research undertaking, the running time proportions of air-conditioning systems under part load have been obtained through analysis on energy consumption data during practical operation in all public buildings in Chongqing. This was achieved by using analysis methods, based on the statistical energy consumption data distribution of public buildings month-by-month. Comparing with the weight number of IPLV, part load operation coefficient of air-conditioning system, based on this research, does not only show the status of system refrigerating host, but also reflects and calculate energy efficiency of the whole air-conditioning system. The coefficient results from the processing and analyzing of practical running data, shows the practical running status of area and building type (actual and objective) – not clear. The method is different from model analysis which gets IPLV weight number, in the sense that this method of coefficient results in both four equal proportions and also part load operation coefficient of air-conditioning system under any load rate as necessary.

Accurate single trial P300 classification lends itself to fast and accurate control of Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs). Highly accurate classification of single trial P300 ERPs is achieved by characterizing the EEG via corresponding stationary and time-varying Wackermann parameters. Subsets of maximally discriminating parameters are then selected using the Network Clustering feature selection algorithm and classified with Naive-Bayes and Linear Discriminant Analysis classifiers. Hence the method is assessed on two different data-sets from BCI competitions and is shown to produce accuracies of between approximately 70% and 85%. This is promising for the use of Wackermann parameters as features in the classification of single-trial ERP responses.

Agricultural tenancies arising after 1st September 1995 are mostly governed by the Agricultural Tenancies Act 1995. As such, tenants under this Act do not benefit from the degree of protection conferred on tenancies already in existence, which remain under the Agricultural Holdings Act 1986. Section 4 of the 1995 Act seeks to protect those tenancies which subsequently inadvertently undergo a surrender and regrant and which would otherwise lose the protection of the 1986 Act. This paper seeks to investigate, by relating recent case law and statute to the situation of agricultural tenancies, the occasions where surrender and regrant might occur and whether in such instances the protection of the 1986 Act will be lost.
