It is known that certain video deghoster systems cannot fully process the induced signal derived from the quadrature carrier forming nature of the VSB filter under a multipath condition. A new deterministic IIR deghoster filter structure is given which is capable of deghosting terrestrial video for any relative ghost carrier phase.

Certain deghosters suffer from the presence of distortion caused by the quadrature forming nature of the IF VSB filter operating on a ghosted IF signal. By analysing this a priori effect, a specific deghoster solution is found by using the phase quadrature detected IF signal to cancel the VSB induced ghost quadrature distortions from the detected inphase signal before deghosting takes place.

The exploitation of microhabitats is widely considered to increase biodiversity in marine ecosystems. Although intertidal hermit crabs and gastropods may inhabit the same shell type and shore level, their microhabitat may differ depending on the state of the tide. On the south coast of Wales the hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus mainly inhabits the shells of Nucella lapillus (84%). Hermit crab shells had a significantly different encrusting community compared with live N. lapillus shells. At low tide the live gastropods were found on exposed rock surfaces whereas hermit crabs were restricted to tidal pools. Communities encrusting live gastropod shells were characterised by lower species richness and abundance compared with shells inhabited by hermit crabs (12 species found in total). A greater abundance and richness of epibionts was recorded from both shell types during the summer compared with winter. Differences in community composition between shell occupant types were attributed to microhabitats used by gastropods and hermit crabs and the associated desiccation pressures, rather than competitive interactions or shell characteristics. This contradicts earlier studies of subtidal shells where biological processes were considered more important than physical factors in controlling species abundance and richness patterns. The use of rockpool microhabitats by hermit crabs increases the biodiversity of rocky shores, as some species commonly found on hermit-crab-inhabited shells were rare in other local habitats.

The High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder is described, with particular reference to the atmospheric measurements to be made and the rationale behind the measurement strategy. The demands this strategy places on the filters to be used in the instrument and the designs to which this leads to are described. A second set of filters at an intermediate image plane to reduce "Ghost Imaging" is discussed together with their required spectral properties. A method of combining the spectral characteristics of the primary and secondary filters in each channel are combined together with the spectral response of the detectors and other optical elements to obtain the system spectral response weighted appropriately for the Planck function and atmospheric limb absorption. This method is used to demonstrate whether the out-of-band spectral blocking requirement for a channel is being met and an example calculation is demonstrated showing how the blocking is built up for a representative channel. Finally, the techniques used to produce filters of the necessary sub-millimetre sizes together with the testing methods and procedures used to assess the environmental durability and establish space flight quality are discussed.

By using a deterministic approach, an exact form for the synchronous detected video signal under a ghosted condition is presented. Information regarding the phase quadrature-induced ghost component derived from the quadrature forming nature of the vestigial sideband (VSB) filter is obtained by crosscorrelating the detected video with the ghost cancel reference (GCR) signal. As a result, the minimum number of taps required to correctly remove all the ghost components is subsequently presented. The results are applied to both National Television System Committee (NTSC) and phase alternate line (PAL) television.

The real time hardware architecture of a deterministic video echo canceller (deghoster) system is presented. The deghoster is capable of calculating all the multipath channel distortion characteristics from terrestrial and cable television in one single pass while performing real time video in-line ghost cancellation. The results from the actual system are also presented in this paper.

A deterministic prototype video deghoster is presented which is capable of calculating all the multipath channel distortion characteristics in one single pass and subsequently removing the multipath distortions, commonly termed ghosts. Within the system, a channel identification algorithm finds in isolation all the ghost components while a dedicated DSP filter subsystem is capable of removing ghosts in real time. The results from the system are presented.

Under the multipath conditions of terrestrial television transmission, ghost carriers cause additive information to be generated by the VSB filter within the television receiver. By analysis of this a priori effect of the VSB filter under a ghosted condition the inphase and phase quadrature detected video signals are defined. Derived from these results, a new algorithm based upon correlation techniques is presented which finds the characteristics of the amplitude and delay of individual ghosts. These characteristics are then passed to a deterministic deghoster to minimise ghost effects.

In terrestrial television transmission multiple paths of various lengths can occur between the transmitter and the receiver. Such paths occur because of reflections from objects outside the direct transmission path. The multipath signals arriving at the receiver are all detected along with the intended signal causing time displaced replicas called 'ghosts' to appear on the television picture. With an increasing number of people living within built up areas, ghosting is becoming commonplace and therefore deghosting is becoming increasingly important. This thesis uses a deterministic time domain approach to deghosting, resulting in a simple solution to the problem of removing ghosts. A new video detector is presented which reduces the synchronous detector local oscillator phase error, caused by any practical size of ghost, to a lower level than has ever previously been achieved. From the new detector, dispersion of the video signal is minimised and a known closed-form time domain description of the individual ghost components within the detected video is subsequently obtained. Developed from mathematical descriptions of the detected video, a new specific deghoster filter structure is presented which is capable of removing both inphase (I) and also the phase quadrature (Q) induced ghost signals derived from the VSB operation. The new deghoster filter requires much less hardware than any previous deghoster which is capable of removing both I and Q ghost components. A new channel identification algorithm was also required and written which is based upon simple correlation techniques to find the delay and complex amplitude characteristics of individual ghosts. The result of the channel identification is then passed to the new I and Q deghoster filter for ghost cancellation.
