The purpose of this paper is to show that, for a large class of band-dominated operators on $\ell^\infty(Z,U)$, with $U$ being a complex Banach space, the injectivity of all limit operators of $A$ already implies their invertibility and the uniform boundedness of their inverses. The latter property is known to be equivalent to the invertibility at infinity of $A$, which, on the other hand, is often equivalent to the Fredholmness of $A$. As a consequence, for operators $A$ in the Wiener algebra, we can characterize the essential spectrum of $A$ on $\ell^p(Z,U)$, regardless of $p\in[1,\infty]$, as the union of point spectra of its limit operators considered as acting on $\ell^p(Z,U)$.

The polar vortex of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) split dramatically during September 2002. The large-scale dynamical effects were manifest throughout the stratosphere and upper troposphere, corresponding to two distinct cyclonic centers in the upper troposphere–stratosphere system. High-resolution (T511) ECMWF analyses, supplemented by analyses from the Met Office, are used to present a detailed dynamical analysis of the event. First, the anomalous evolution of the SH polar vortex is placed in the context of the evolution that is usually witnessed during spring. Then high-resolution fields of potential vorticity (PV) from ECMWF are used to reveal several dynamical features of the split. Vortex fragments are rapidly sheared out into sheets of high (modulus) PV, which subsequently roll up into distinct synoptic-scale vortices. It is proposed that the stratospheric circulation becomes hydrodynamically unstable through a significant depth of the troposphere–stratosphere system as the polar vortex elongates.

In this paper we review the experimental development of agri-environment measures for use on grasslands. Sward structure has been shown to have a strong influence on birds' ability to forage in grasslands, but the effects of food abundance on foraging behaviour are poorly understood and this hinders development of grassland conservation measures. The experiments described have a dual purpose: to investigate the foraging ecology of birds on grasslands and to test candidate management measures. Most of the work featured focuses on increasing invertebrate food resources during the summer by increasing habitat heterogeneity. We also identify important gaps in the habitats provided by existing or experimental measures, where similar dual-purpose experiments are required.

Quantum calculations of the ground vibrational state tunneling splitting of H-atom and D-atom transfer in malonaldehyde are performed on a full-dimensional ab initio potential energy surface (PES). The PES is a fit to 11 147 near basis-set-limit frozen-core CCSD(T) electronic energies. This surface properly describes the invariance of the potential with respect to all permutations of identical atoms. The saddle-point barrier for the H-atom transfer on the PES is 4.1 kcal/mol, in excellent agreement with the reported ab initio value. Model one-dimensional and "exact" full-dimensional calculations of the splitting for H- and D-atom transfer are done using this PES. The tunneling splittings in full dimensionality are calculated using the unbiased "fixed-node" diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method in Cartesian and saddle-point normal coordinates. The ground-state tunneling splitting is found to be 21.6 cm(-1) in Cartesian coordinates and 22.6 cm(-1) in normal coordinates, with an uncertainty of 2-3 cm(-1). This splitting is also calculated based on a model which makes use of the exact single-well zero-point energy (ZPE) obtained with the MULTIMODE code and DMC ZPE and this calculation gives a tunneling splitting of 21-22 cm(-1). The corresponding computed splittings for the D-atom transfer are 3.0, 3.1, and 2-3 cm(-1). These calculated tunneling splittings agree with each other to within less than the standard uncertainties obtained with the DMC method used, which are between 2 and 3 cm(-1), and agree well with the experimental values of 21.6 and 2.9 cm(-1) for the H and D transfer, respectively. In models of complicated physical-chemical processes operator splitting is very often applied in order to achieve sufficient accuracy as well as efficiency of the numerical solution. The recently rediscovered weighted splitting schemes have the great advantage of being parallelizable on operator level, which allows us to reduce the computational time if parallel computers are used. In this paper, the computational times needed for the weighted splitting methods are studied in comparison with the sequential (S) splitting and the Marchuk-Strang (MSt) splitting and are illustrated by numerical experiments performed by use of simplified versions of the Danish Eulerian model (DEM).

Splitting techniques are commonly used when large-scale models, which appear in different fields of science and engineering, are treated numerically. Four types of splitting procedures are defined and discussed. The problem of the choice of a splitting procedure is investigated. Several numerical tests, by which the influence of the splitting errors on the accuracy of the results is studied, are given. It is shown that the splitting errors decrease linearly when (1) the splitting procedure is of first order and (2) the splitting errors are dominant. Three examples for splitting procedures used in all large-scale air pollution models are presented. Numerical results obtained by a particular air pollution model, Unified Danish Eulerian Model (UNI-DEM), are given and analysed.
