Three new ruthenium complexes of the formulae cis-[Ru(PPh3)(2)(BzTscbz)(2)] (1a), [Ru-2(PPh3)(2)(BzTscbz)(4)] (1b) and [Ru(PPh3)(2)(BzTscHbz)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2) [BzTscHbz = 4-(phenyl) thiosemicarbazone of benzaldehyde] have been synthesized and characterized by various physicochemical methods including X-ray structure determinations for 1a and 1b. The relative stabilities of the four-membered versus five-membered chelate rings formed by the deprotonated ligand BzTscbz are discussed on the basis of the experimental results and some semi-empirical as well as DFT calculations. The relative zinc (Zn) efficiencies of 33 wheat and 3 barley cultivars were determined by growing them in chelate-buffered culture solutions. Zn efficiency, determined by growth in a Zn-deficient solution relative to that in a medium containing an adequate concentration of Zn, was found to vary between 10% and 63% among the cultivars tested. Out of the 36 cultivars tested, 12 proved to be Zn efficient, 10 were Zn inefficient, and the remaining 14 varieties were classed as intermediate. The most Zn-efficient cultivars included Bakhtawar, Gatcher S61, Wilgoyne, and Madrigal, and the most Zn inefficient included Durati, Songlen, Excalibur, and Chakwal-86. Zn-efficient cultivars accumulated greater amounts of Zn in their shoots than inefficient cultivars, but the correlation between shoot Zn and shoot dry matter production was poor. All the cultivars accumulated higher concentrations of iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and phosphorus (P) at deficient levels of Zn, compared with adequate Zn concentrations. The Zn-inefficient cultivars accumulated higher concentrations of these other elements compared to efficient cultivars.

Bacterial pathogens and symbionts must suppress or negate host innate immunity. However, pathogens release conserved oligomeric and polymeric molecules or MAMPs (Microbial Associated Molecular Patterns), which elicit host defenses [1], [2] and [3]. Extracellular polysaccharides (EPSs) are key virulence factors in plant and animal pathogenesis, but their precise function in establishing basic compatibility remains unclear [4], [5], [6] and [7]. Here, we show that EPSs suppress MAMP-induced signaling in plants through their polyanionic nature [4] and consequent ability to chelate divalent calcium ions [8]. In plants, Ca2+ ion influx to the cytosol from the apoplast (where bacteria multiply [4], [5] and [9]) is a prerequisite for activation of myriad defenses by MAMPs [10]. We show that EPSs from diverse plant and animal pathogens and symbionts bind calcium. EPS-defective mutants or pure MAMPs, such as the flagellin peptide flg22, elicit calcium influx, expression of host defense genes, and downstream resistance. Furthermore, EPSs, produced by wild-type strains or purified, suppress induced responses but do not block flg22-receptor binding in Arabidopsis cells. EPS production was confirmed in planta, and the amounts in bacterial biofilms greatly exceed those required for binding of apoplastic calcium. These data reveal a novel, fundamental role for bacterial EPS in disease establishment, encouraging novel control strategies.

New mono- and binuclear complexes of the Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2) fragment, containing bipyridyl ligands (2,2'-bpy, 4,4'-Me-2-2,2'-bpy) as chelates, and mono- (4-CNpy, 4-Mepy, NCMe, Br) or bidentate nitrogen ligands (4,4'-bpy, bipyridylethylene, pyrazine) as terminal or bridging ligands, respectively, were prepared. The binuclear complex [{Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2)(2,2'-bpy)}(2)(mu-4,4'-bpy)][PF6](2) (2) was shown by X-ray diffraction to assemble in the crystal forming large channels with a rectangular section. A longer bridge, such as bipyridylethylene, led to a different structure (3). 4-CNpy behaved as monodentate ligand (4), coordinating through the pyridine nitrogen as a terminal ligand. NMR spectroscopy studies showed that the complexes exhibited a fluxional behavior in solution, the endo and exo forms of the more symmetrical equatorial isomers being usually present and interconverting in solution. The solid state structures of the complexes revealed a preference for the more symmetrical equatorial isomer, with the two chelate ligands in trans positions in the binuclear species. The rings tended to become parallel in the organized crystal. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

[Cu(2-acetylpyridine)(2)]ClO4 (1), characterised here, has a novel Cu'N202 core in the solid state. Variable-temperature H-1 NMR studies show that the two chelate rings open up in solution at room temperature and the keto oxygen atoms dangle freely. As the temperature is lowered, the 0 atoms tend to bind to the metal atom. The corresponding silver(I) complex, [Ag(2-acetylpyridine)2]ClO4 (4), characterised by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, has an (AgN2)-N-I core in the solid state as well as in solution. Thus, while 1 is fluxional, 4 is not. In cyclic voltammetry, complex 1 displays a quasireversible Cu-II/I couple with a half-wave potential of 0.40 V vs. SCE. Complex I is easily oxidised by air and H2O2 in methanol to give rise to a dinuclear copper(II) complex where the ligand framework is not simple acetylpyridine. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Reaction of 2-(4'-R-phenylazo)-4-methylphenols (R = OCH3, CH3, H, Cl, and NO2) with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] affords a family of five ruthenium(III) complexes, containing a 2-(arylazo)phenolate ligand forming a six-membered chelate ring and a tetradentate ligand formed from two 2-(arylazo) phenols via an unusual C-C coupling linki.ng the two ortho carbons of the phenyl rings in the arylazo fragment. A similar reaction with 2-(2'-methylphenylazo)-4-methylphenol with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] has afforded a similar complex, in which one 2-(2'-methylphenylazo)-4-methylphenolate ligand is coordinated forming a six-membered chelate ring, and the other two ligands have undergone the C-C coupling reaction, and the coupled species is coordinated as a tetradentate ligand forming a five-membered N,O-chelate ring, a nine-membered N,N-chelate ring, and another five-membered chelate ring. Reaction of 2-(2',6'-dimethylphenylazo)-4-methylphenol with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] has afforded a complex in which two 2-(2',6'-dimethylphenylazo)-4-methylphenols are coordinated as bidentate N,O-donors forming five- and six-membered chelate rings, while the third one has undergone cleavage across the N=N bond, and the phenolate fragment, thus generated, remains coordinated to the metal center in the iminosemiquinonate form. Structures of four selected complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The first six complexes are one-electron paramagnetic and show rhombic ESR spectra. The last complex is diamagnetic and shows characteristic H-1 NMR signals. All the complexes show intense charge-transfer transitions in the visible region and a Ru(III)-Ru(IV) oxidation on the positive side of SCE and a Ru(III)-Ru(II) reduction on the negative side.

Bis(diphenylphosphino)methane dioxide compounds of uranyl nitrate and uranyl bis(beta-diketonates) have been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction methods. Monodentate, bidentate chelate and bridging bidentate modes of coordination for this ligand have been established from the single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of its compounds, [UO2(DBM)(2)DPPMO], [UO2(NO3)(2)DPPNO] and [{UO2(DBM)(2)}(2)DPPMO], respectively. The hydrothermal reactions of Ni(NO3)(2).6H(2)O, disodium fumarate (fum) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe)/1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) propane (bpp) in aqueous-methanol medium yield one 3-D and one 2-D metal-organic hybrid material, [Ni(fum)(bpe)] (1) and [Ni(fum)(bpp)(H2O)] (2), respectively. Complex 1 possesses a novel unprecedented structure, the first example of an "unusual mode" of a five-fold distorted interpenetrated network with metal-ligand linkages where the four six-membered windows in each adamantane-type cage are different. The structural characterization of complex 2 evidences a buckled sheet where nickel ions are in a distorted octahedral geometry, with two carboxylic groups, one acting as a bis-chelate, the other as a bis-monodentate ligand. The metal ion completes the coordination sphere through one water molecule and two bpp nitrogens in cis position. Variable-temperature magnetic measurements of complexes 1 and 2 reveal the existence of very weak antiferromagnetic intramolecular interactions and/or the presence of single-ion zero field splitting (D) of isolated Ni-II ions in both the compounds. Experimentally, both the J parameters are close, comparable and very small. Considering zero-field splitting of Ni-II, the calculated D values are in agreement with values reported in the literature for Ni-II ions. Complex 3, [{Co(phen)}(2)(fum)(2)] (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) is obtained by diffusing methanolic solution of 1,10-phenanthroline on an aqueous layer of disodium fumarate and Co(NO3)(2).6H(2)O. It consists of dimeric Co-II(phen) units, doubly bridged by carboxylate groups in a distorted syn-syn fashion. These fumarate anions act as bis-chelates to form corrugated sheets. The 2D layer has a (4,4) topology, with the nodes represented by the centres of the dimers. The magnetic data were fitted ignoring the very weak coupling through the fumarate pathway and using a dimer model.

The structures of intermediates formed in propylene polymerisation using neutral salicyladiminato palladium(II) and nickel(II) complexes as catalysts have been investigated using density functional theory. Calculations show that all low energy intermediates contain agostic interactions either between the metal and a hydrogen from the added propylene forming four- or five-membered chelate rings, or, when a phenyl ring is present, between the metal and an aromatic C-C bond. The agostic interactions with the metal are concomitant with changes in ligand dimensions and electronic properties. In particular when a metal to hydrogen bond is formed, there is a lengthening of the C-H bond. Significant differences are found for the agostic interactions with palladium and nickel in that for Pd there is a clear preference for specific intermediates but for Ni there are several different structures with similar energies which are likely to lead to a greater variety of products on further polymerisation. A general approach for the synthesis of fused cyclic systems containing medium-sized rings (7-9) has been developed. The key steps involve a diastereoface-selective Diels-Alder reaction of the dienophiles 4a-d attached to a furanosugar with cyclopentadiene and ring opening (ROM)-ring closing metathesis (RCM) of the resulting norbornene derivatives 10a-d and 11a-d. Diels-Alder reaction of the dienophiles 4a-d with cyclopentadiene in the absence of a catalyst produced 10a-d as the major product arising through addition of the diene to the unhindered Si-face. The most interesting and new aspect of the Diels-Alder reaction of these dienophiles is the accessibility of the Re-face that was blocked by the alkenyl chains under Lewis acid catalysis producing the diastereoisomers 11a-d exclusively. The reversal of facial selectivity from an uncatalyzed reaction to a catalyzed one is unprecedented. The observed stereochemical dichotomy is attributed to rotation of the enone moiety along the or bond linking the sugar moiety during formation of the chelate 13. This makes the Re-face of the enone moiety in 4a-d unhindered. Diels-Alder reaction of the carbocyclic analogue 15 under Lewis acid catalysis produced a 1: 1 mixture of the adducts 16 and 17 confirming the participation of sugar ring oxygen in chelate formation. Finally ROM-RCM of 10a-d and 11a-d with Grubbs' catalyst afforded the cis-syn-cis and cis-anti-cis bicyclo-annulated sugars 21a-d and 23a-d, respectively, containing 7-9 membered rings.

Sixteen neutral mixed ligand thiosemicarbazone complexes of ruthenium having general formula [Ru(PPh3)(2)L-2], where LH = 1-(arylidine)4-aryl thiosemicarbazones, have been synthesized and characterized. All complexes are diamagnetic and hence ruthenium is in the +2 oxidation state (low-spin d(6), S = 0). The complexes show several intense peaks in the visible region due to allowed metal to ligand charge transfer transitions. The structures of four of the complexes have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and they show that thiosemicarbazone ligands coordinate to the ruthenium center through the hydrazinic nitrogen and sulfur forming four-membered chelate rings with ruthenium in N2S2P2 coordination environment. In dichloromethane solution, the complexes show two quasi-reversible oxidative responses corresponding to loss of electron from HOMO and HOMO - 1. The E-0 values of the above two oxidations shows good linear relationship with Hammett substituents constant (sigma) as well as with the HOMO energy of the molecules calculated by the EHMO method. A DFT calculation on one representative complex suggests that there is appreciable contribution of the sulfur p-orbitals to the HOMO and HOMO - 1. Thus, assignment of the oxidation state of the metal in such complexes must be made with caution. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bis(o-hydroxyacetophenone)nickel(II) dihydrate, on reaction with 1,3-pentanediamine, yields a bis-chelate complex [NiL2]center dot 2H(2)O (1) of mono-condensed tridentate Schiff base ligand HL {2-[1-(3-aminopentylimino)ethyl]phenol}. The Schiff base has been freed from the complex by precipitating the Nil, as a dimethylglyoximato complex. HL reacts smoothly with Ni(SCN)(2)center dot 4H(2)O furnishing the complex [NiL(NCS)] (2) and with CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O in the presence of NaN3 or NH4SCN producing [CuL(N-3)](2) (3) or [CuL(NCS)] (4). On the other hand, upon reaction with Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O, the Schiff base undergoes hydrolysis to yield ternary complexes [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]ClO4 (5) and [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]NO3 (6), respectively (Hhap = o-hydroxyacetophenone and pn = 1,3-pentanediamine). The ligand HL undergoes hydrolysis also on reaction with Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O or Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O to yield [Ni(hap)(2)] (7). The structures of the complexes 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In complex 2, Ni-II possesses square-planar geometry, being coordinated by the tridentate mono-negative Schiff base, L and the isothiocyanate group. The coordination environment around Cu-II in complex 3 is very similar to that in complex 2 but here two units are joined together by end-on, axial-equatorial azide bridges to result in a dimer in which the geometry around Cu-II is square pyramidal. In both 5 and 6, the Cu-II atoms display the square-pyramidal environment; the equatorial sites being coordinated by the two amine groups of 1,3-pentanediamine and two oxygen atoms of o-hydroxyacetophenone. The axial site is coordinated by a water molecule. Complex 7 is a square-planar complex with the Ni atom bonded to four oxygen atoms from two hap moieties. The mononuclear units of 2 and dinuclear units of 3 are linked by strong hydrogen bonds to form a one-dimensional network. The mononuclear units of 5 and 6 are joined together to form a dimer by very strong hydrogen bonds through the coordinated water molecule. These dimers are further involved in hydrogen bonding with the respective counteranions to form 2-D net-like open frameworks. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008).

Six Ru(II) complexes of formula [Ru(L)(2)(PPh3)(2)] have been prepared where LH = 4-(aryl)thiosemicarbazones of thiophen-2-carbaldehyde. X-ray crystal structures of five of the complexes are reported. In all the complexes ruthenium is six coordinate with a distorted octahedral cis-P-2, cis-N-2, trans-S-2 donor environment, and each of the two thiosemicarbazone ligands are coordinated in a bidentate fashion forming a four membered chelate ring. The complexes undergo a one-electron oxidation at similar to 0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The EPR spectrum of the electrochemically oxidized solution at 100 K shows a rhombic signal, with transitions at g(1) = 2.27, g(2) = 2.00 and g(3) = 1.80. DFT calculations on one of the complexes suggest that there is 35% ruthenium and 17% sulfur orbital contribution to the HOMO. These results suggest that the assignment of metal atom oxidation states in these compounds is not unambiguous. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

C-1-Symmetric phosphino/phosphonite ligands are prepared by the reactions of Ph2P(CH2)(2)P(NMe2)(2) with (S)-1,11'-bi-2-naphthol (to give L-A) or (S)-10,10'-bi-9-phenanthrol (to give L-B). Racemic 10,10'-bi-9-phenanthrol is synthesized in three steps from phenanthrene in 44% overall yield. The complexes [PdCl2(L-A,L-B)] (1a,b), [PtCl2(L-A,L-B)] (2a,b), [Rh(cod)(L-A,L-B)]BF4 (3a,b) and [Rh(L-A,L-B)(2)]BF4 (4a,b) are reported and the crystal structure of la has been determined. A P-31 NMR study shows that M, a 1:1 mixture of the monodentates, PMePh2 and methyl monophosphonite L-1a (based on (S)-1,11'-bi-2-naphthol), reacts with 1 equiv of [Rh(cod)(2)]BF4 to give the heteroligand complex [Rh(cod)(PMePh2)(L-1a)]BF4 (5) and homoligand complexes [Rh(cod)(PMePh2)(2)]BF4 (6) and [Rh(cod)(L-1a)(2)]BF4 (7) in the ratio 2:1:1. The same mixture of 5-7 is obtained upon mixing the isolated homoligand complexes 6 and 7 although the equilibrium is only established rapidly in the presence of an excess of PMePh2. The predominant species 5 is a monodentate ligand complex analogue of the chelate 3a. When the mixture of 5-7 is exposed to 5 atm H-2 for 1 h (the conditions used for catalyst preactivation in the asymmetric hydrogenation studies), the products are identified as the solvento species [Rh(PMePh2)(L-1a)(S)(2)]BF4 (5'), [Rh(S)(2)(PMePh2)(2)]BF4 (6') and [Rh(S)(2)(L-1a)(2)]BF4 (7') and are formed in the same 2:1:1 ratio. The reaction of M with 0.5 equiv of [Rh(cod)(2)]BF4 gives exclusively the heteroligand complex cis-[Rh(PMePh2)(2)(L-1a)(2)]BF4 (8), an analogue of 4a. The asymmetric hydrogenation of dehydroamino acid derivatives catalyzed by 3a,b is reported, and the enantioselectivities are compared with those obtained with (a) chelate catalysts derived from analogous diphosphonite ligands L-2a and L-2b, (b) catalysts based on methyl monophosphonites L-1a and L-1b, and (c) catalysts derived from mixture M. For the cinnamate and acrylate substrates studied, the catalysts derived from the phosphino/phosphonite bidentates L-A,L-B generally give superior enantioselectivities to the analogous diphosphonites L-2a and L-2b; these results are rationalized in terms of delta/lambda-chelate conformations and allosteric effects of the substrates. The rate of hydrogenation of acrylate substrate A with heterochelate 3a is significantly faster than with the homochelate analogues [Rh(L-2a)(cod)]BF4 and [Rh(dppe)(cod)]BF4. A synergic effect on the rate is also observed with the monodentate analogues: the rate of hydrogenation with the mixture containing predominantly heteroligand complex 5 is faster than with the monophosphine complex 6 or monophosphonite complex 7. Thus the hydrogenation catalysis carried out with M and [Rh(cod)(2)]BF4 is controlled by the dominant and most efficient heteroligand complex 5. In this study, the heterodiphos chelate 3a is shown to be more efficient and gives the opposite sense of optical induction t the heteromonophos analogue
