To investigate the consequences of cyclometalation for electronic communication in dinuclear ruthenium complexes, a series of 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (tppz) bridged diruthenium complexes was prepared and studied. These complexes have a central tppz ligand bridging via nitrogen-to-ruthenium coordination bonds, while each ruthenium atom also binds either a monoanionic, N,C,N'-terdentate 2,6-bis(2'-pyridyl)phenyl (R-N boolean AND C boolean AND N) ligand or a 2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine (tpy) ligand. The N,C,N'-, that is, biscyclometalation, instead of the latter N,N', N ''-bonding motif significantly changes the electronic properties of the resulting complexes. Starting from well-known [{Ru(tpy)}(2)(mu-tppz)](4+) (tpy = 2,2':2 '',6-terpyridine) ([3](4+)) as a model compound, the complexes [{Ru(R-N boolean AND C boolean AND N)}(mu-tppz){Ru(tpy)}](3+) (R-N boolean AND C(H)boolean AND N = 4-R-1,3-dipyridylbenzene, R = H ([4a](3+)), CO2Me ([4b](3+))), and [{Ru(R-N boolean AND C boolean AND N)}(2)(mu-tppz)](2+), (R = H ([5a](2+)), CO2Me ([5b](2+))) were prepared with one or two N,C,N'-cyclometalated terminal ligands. The oxidation and reduction potentials of cyclometalated [4](3+) and [5](2+) are shifted negatively compared to non-cyclometalated [3](4+), the oxidation processes being affected more significantly. Compared to [3](4+), the electronic spectra of [5](2+) display large bathochromic shifts of the main MLCT transitions in the visible spectral region with low-energy absorptions tailing down to the NIR region. One-electron oxidation of [3](4+) and [5](2+) gives rise to low-energy absorption bands. The comproportionation constants and NIR band shape correspond to delocalized Robin-Day class III compounds. Complexes [4a](3+) (R = H) and [4b](3+) (R = CO2Me) also exhibit strong electronic communication, and notwithstanding the large redox-asymmetry the visible metal-to-ligand charge-transfer absorption is assigned to originate from both metal centers. The potential of the first, ruthenium-based, reversible oxidation process is strongly negatively shifted. On the contrary, the second oxidation is irreversible and cyclometalated ligand-based. Upon one-electron oxidation, a weak and low-energy absorption arises.

The dinuclear complex [(tpy)Ru-II(PCP-PCP)Ru-II(tPY)]Cl-2 (bridging PCP-PCP = 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)biphenyl, [C6H2(CH2PPh2)(2)-3,5](2)(2-)) was prepared via a transcyclometalation reaction of the bis-pincer ligand [PC(H)P-PC(H)P] and the Ru(II) precursor [Ru(NCN)(tpy)]Cl (NCN = [C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6](-)) followed by a reaction with 2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine (tpy). Electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of [(tpy)Ru-II(PCP-PCP)Ru-II(tPY)]Cl-2 are compared with those of the closely related [(tpy)Ru-II(NCN-NCN)Ru-II(tpy)](PF6)(2) (NCN-NCN = [C6H2(CH2- NMe2)(2)-3,5](2)(2-)) obtained by two-electron reduction of [(tpy)Ru-III(NCN-NCN)Ru-III(tpy)](PF6)(4). The molecular structure of the latter complex has been determined by single-crystal X-ray structure determination. One-electron reduction of [(tpy)Ru-III(NCN-NCN)Ru-III(tpy)](PF6)(4) and one-electron oxidation of [(tpy)Ru-II(PCP-PCP)RUII(tpy)]Cl-2 yielded the mixed-valence species [(tpy)Ru-III(NCN-NCN)RUII(tpy)](3+) and [(tpy)Ru-III(PCP-PCP)RUII(tpy)](3+), respectively. The comproportionation equilibrium constants K-c (900 and 748 for [(tpy)Ru-III(NCN-NCN)Ru-III(tpy)](4+) and [(tpy)Ru-II(PCP-PCP)RUII(tpy)](2+), respectively) determined from cyclic voltammetric data reveal comparable stability of the [Ru-III-Ru-II] state of both complexes. Spectroelectrochemical measurements and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy were employed to further characterize the different redox states with special focus on the mixed-valence species and their NIR bands. Analysis of these bands in the framework of Hush theory indicates that the mixed-valence complexes [(tpy)Ru-III(PCP-PCP)RUII(tpy)](3+) and [(tpy)Ru-III(NCN-NCN)RUII(tpy)](3+) belong to strongly coupled borderline Class II/Class III and intrinsically coupled Class III systems, respectively. Preliminary DFT calculations suggest that extensive delocalization of the spin density over the metal centers and the bridging ligand exists. TD-DFT calculations then suggested a substantial MLCT character of the NIR electronic transitions. The results obtained in this study point to a decreased metal-metal electronic interaction accommodated by the double-cyclometalated bis-pincer bridge when strong sigma-donor NMe2 groups are replaced by weak sigma-donor, pi-acceptor PPh2 groups

This work reports the ligational behavior of the neutral bidentate chelating molecule 2-(3,5-dimethyl pyrazol-1-yl) benzothiazole towards the oxomolybdenum(V) center. Both mononuclear complexes of the type (MoOX3L)-O-V and binuclear complexes of the formula (Mo2O4X2L2)-O-V (where X = Cl, Br) are isolated in the solid state. The complexes are characterized by elemental analyses, various spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis IR), magnetic susceptibility measurement at room temperature, and cyclic voltammetry for their redox behavior at a platinum electrode in CH3CN. The mononuclear complexes (MoOX3L)-O-V are found to be paramagnetic while the binuclear complexes Mo2O4X2L2 are diamagnetic. Crystal and molecular structure of the ligand and the dioxomolybdenum complex (MoO2Br2L)-O-VI (obtained from the complex MoOBr3L during crystallization) have been solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Relevant DFT calculations of the ligand and the complex (MoO2Br2L)-O-VI are also carried out.

The AB, monomer, 3,5-bis(3-hydroxylprop-1-ynyl)benzoic acid 1, has been synthesized using a Sonogashira cross-coupling with a palladium catalyst system developed for use with deactivated aryl halides. Numerous condensation methods have then been assessed in the homopolymerization of the acid-diol monomer 1 to afford hyperbranched polyesters. However, as a result of the thermal instability of the monomer, direct thermal polymerizations could not be employed. Alternative approaches using carbodiimide-coupling reagents enabled the production of soluble polyesters possessing molecular weights and degrees of branching ranging from 2500 to 11,000 and 0.22 to 0.33, respectively. Intertwining triple helical nanofibers with an overall handedness have been formed from self-assembling chiral benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamides 1, 2 and 3, whereas the achiralbenzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide 4 upon self-association gives rise to straight nanofibers without any twist and transmission electron microscopy images of chiral compounds clearly demonstrate that the handedness of the triple helical nanofibers can be reversed by using the enantiomeric benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide building blocks.

The extracting agent 2,6-bis(4,6-di-pivaloylamino-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-pyridine (L-5) in n-octanol was found, in synergy with 2-bromodecanoic acid, to give D-Am/D-Eu separation factors (SFs) between 2.4 and 3.7 when used to extract the metal ions from 0.02-0.12 M HNO3. Slightly higher SFs (4-6) were obtained in the absence of the synergist when the ligand was used to extract Am(III) and Eu(III) from 0.98 M HNO3. In order to investigate the possible nature of the extracted species crystal structures of L-5 and the complex formed between Yb(III) with 2,6-bis(4,6-di-amino-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-pyridine (L-4) were also determined. The structure of L-5 shows 3 methanol solvent molecules all of which form 2 or 3 hydrogen bonds with triazine nitrogen atoms, amide nitrogen or oxygen atoms, or pyridine nitrogen atoms. However, L-5 is relatively unstable in metal complexation reactions and loses amide groups to form the parent tetramine L-4. The crystal structure of Yb(L-4)(NO3)(3) shows ytterbium in a 9-coordinate environment being bonded to three donor atoms of the ligand and three bidentate nitrate ions. The solvent extraction properties of L-4 and L-5 are far inferior to those found for the 2,6-bis-(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-pyridines (L-1) which have SF values of ca. 140 and theoretical calculations have been made to compare the electronic properties of the ligands. The electronic charge distribution in L-4 and L-5 is similar to that found in other terdentate ligands such as terpyridine which have equally poor extraction properties and suggests that the unique properties of L-1 evolve from the presence of two adjacent nitrogen atoms in the triazine rings.

The key intermediate 1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-3-deoxy-3 beta-allyl-alpha-D-glucofuranose (8) could be conveniently prepared through radical induced allyl substitution at C-3 of appropriate 1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-alpha-D-glucofuranose derivatives (7a,b) and used to synthesize enantiomeric bishydroxymethyl aminocyclopentanols 13 and 19 by the application of a 1,3-dipolar nitrone cycloaddition reaction involving the C-5 or C-1 aldehyde functionality. The products were subsequently transformed into carbanucleoside enantiomers 15 and 21. The diastercomeric isoxazolidinocyclopentane derivative 20 was similarly converted to carbanucleoside 22. The lowest absorption band of fac-[Re(Cl)(CO)(3)(5-NO2-phen)] encompasses two close-lying MLCT transitions. The lower one is directed to LUMO, which is heavily localized on the NO2 group. The UV-vis absorption spectrum is well accounted for by TD-DFT (G03/PBEPBE1/CPCM), provided that the solvent, MeCN, is included in the calculations. Near-UV excitation of fac-[Re(Cl)(CO)(3)(5-NO2-phen)] populates a triplet metal to ligand charge-transfer excited state, (MLCT)-M-3, that was characterized by picosecond time-resolved IR spectroscopy. Large positive shifts of the v(CO) bands upon excitation (+70 cm(-1) for the A'(1) band) signify a very large charge separation between the Re(Cl)(CO)3 unit and the 5-NO2-phen ligand. Details of the excited-state character are revealed by TD-DFT calculated changes of electron density distribution. Experimental excited-state v(CO) wavenumbers agree well with those calculated by DFT. The (MLCT)-M-3 state decays with a ca. 10 ps lifetime (in MeCN) into another transient species, that was identified by TRIR and TD-DFT calculations as an intraligand (3)n pi* excited state, whereby the electron density is excited from the NO2 oxygen lone pairs to the pi* system of 5-NO2-phen. This state is short-lived, decaying to the ground state with a similar to 30 ps lifetime. The presence of an n pi* state seems to be the main factor responsible for the lack of emission and the very short lifetimes of 3 MLCT states seen in all d(6)-metal complexes of nitro-polypyridyl ligands. Localization of the excited electron density in the lowest (MLCT)-M-3 states parallels localization of the extra electron in the reduced state that is characterized by a very small negative shift of the v(CO) IR bands (-6 cm(-1) for A'(1)) but a large downward shift of the v(s)(NO2) IR band. The Re-Cl bond is unusually stable toward reduction, whereas the Cl ligand is readily substituted upon oxidation.

Peculiar reduction pathways of the complexes fac-[Re(imH)(CO)3(phen)]+ and fac-[Re(imCH3)(CO)3(phen)]+ (imH = imidazole, imCH3 = N-methylimidazole and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been unravelled by performing combined cyclic voltammetric and in situ IR spectroelectrochemical experiments. In the temperature range of 293–233 K, the initial reduction of the phen ligand in [Re(imH)(CO)3(phen)]+ results in irreversible conversion of the imidazole ligand to 3-imidazolate by a rapid phen•−→ imH intramolecular electron transfer coupled with N H bond cleavage. This process is followed by second phen-localized 1e− reduction producing [ReI(3-im−)(CO)3(phen•−)]−, similar to the analogous 2,2'-bipyridine complex. In contrast to the bpy analogue, the stability of the phen•−-containing complexes is significantly affected by lowering the temperature. At 233 K, a secondary reaction occurs in both [Re(3-im−)(CO)3(phen•−)]− and [Re(imCH3)(CO)3(phen•−)]. The resulting products exhibit v(CO) wavenumbers indistinguishable from those of the parent phen•− complexes; however, their oxidation occurs at a considerably more positive electrode potential. It is proposed that these species are produced by a new C C bond formation between the C(2) site of 3-im− or imCH3 and the C(2) site of the phen•−ligand.

In the present study we compared the affinity of various drugs for the high affinity "agonist-preferring" binding site of human recombinant 5-HT2A, 5-HT2B and 5-HT2C receptors stably expressed in monoclonal mammalian cell lines. To ensure that the "agonist-preferring" conformation of the receptor was preferentially labelled in competition binding experiments, saturation analysis was conducted using antagonist and agonist radiolabels at each receptor. Antagonist radiolabels ([H-3]-ketanserin for 5-HT2A receptor and [H-3]-mesulergine for 5-HT2B and 5-HT2C receptor) bound to a larger population of receptors in each preparation than the corresponding agonist radiolabel ([I-125]-DOI for 5-HT2A receptor binding and [H-3]-5-HT for 5-HT2B and 5-HT2C receptor binding). Competition experiments were subsequently conducted against appropriate concentrations of the agonist radiolabels bound to the "agonist-preferring" subset of receptors in each preparation. These studies confirmed that there are a number of highly selective antagonists available to investigate 5-HT2 receptor subtype function (for example, MDL 100907, RS-127445 and RS-102221 for 5-HT2A, 5-HT2B and 5-HT2C receptors respectively). There remains, however, a lack of highly selective agonists. (-)DOI is potent and moderately selective for 5-HT2A receptors, BW723C86 has poor selectivity for human 5-HT2B receptors, while Org 37684 and VER-3323 display some selectivity for the 5-HT2C receptor. We report for the first time in a single study, the selectivity of numerous serotonergic drugs for 5-HT2 receptors from the same species, in mammalian cell lines and using, exclusively, agonist radiolabels. The results indicate the importance of defining the selectivity of pharmacological tools, which may have been over-estimated in the past, and highlights the need to find more selective agonists to investigate 5-HT2 receptor pharmacology.

In this article we present for the first time accurate density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD) DFT data for a series of electronically unsaturated five-coordinate complexes [Mn(CO)(3)(L-2)](-), where L-2 stands for a chelating strong pi-donor ligand represented by catecholate, dithiolate, amidothiolate, reduced alpha-diimine (1,4-dialkyl-1,4-diazabutadiene (R-DAB), 2,2'-bipyridine) and reduced 2,2'-biphosphinine types. The single-crystal X-ray structure of the unusual compound [Na(BPY)][Mn(CO)(3)(BPY)]center dot Et2O and the electronic absorption spectrum of the anion [Mn(CO)(3)(BPY)](-) are new in the literature. The nature of the bidentate ligand determines the bonding in the complexes, which varies between two limiting forms: from completely pi-delocalized diamagnetic {(CO)(3)Mn-L-2}(-) for L-2 = alpha-diimine or biphosphinine, to largely valence-trapped {(CO)(3)Mn-1-L-2(2-)}(-) for L-2(2-) = catecholate, where the formal oxidation states of Mn and L-2 can be assigned. The variable degree of the pi-delocalization in the Mn(L-2) chelate ring is indicated by experimental resonance Raman spectra of [Mn(CO)(3)(L-2)](-) (L-2=3,5-di-tBu-catecholate and iPr-DAB), where accurate assignments of the diagnostically important Raman bands have been aided by vibrational analysis. The L-2 = catecholate type of complexes is known to react with Lewis bases (CO substitution, formation of six-coordinate adducts) while the strongly pi-delocalized complexes are inert. The five-coordinate complexes adopt usually a distorted square pyramidal geometry in the solid state, even though transitions to a trigonal bipyramid are also not rare. The experimental structural data and the corresponding DFT-computed values of bond lengths and angles are in a very good agreement. TD-DFT calculations of electronic absorption spectra of the studied Mn complexes and the strongly pi-delocalized reference compound [Fe(CO)(3)(Me-DAB)] have reproduced qualitatively well the experimental spectra. Analyses of the computed electronic transitions in the visible spectroscopic region show that the lowest-energy absorption band always contains a dominant (in some cases almost exclusive) contribution from a pi(HOMO) -> pi*(LUMO) transition within the MnL2 metallacycle. The character of this optical excitation depends strongly on the composition of the frontier orbitals, varying from a partial L-2 -> Mn charge transfer (LMCT) through a fully delocalized pi(MnL2) -> pi*(MnL2) situation to a mixed (CO)Mn -> L-2 charge transfer (LLCT/MLCT). The latter character is most apparent in the case of the reference complex [Fe(CO)(3)(Me-DAB)]. The higher-lying, usually strongly mixed electronic transitions in the visible absorption region originate in the three lower-lying occupied orbitals, HOMO - 1 to HOMO - 3, with significant metal-d contributions. Assignment of these optical excitations to electronic transitions of a specific type is difficult. A partial LLCT/MLCT character is encountered most frequently. The electronic absorption spectra become more complex when the chelating ligand L-2, such as 2,2'-bipyridine, features two or more closely spaced low-lying empty pi* orbitals.
