A simple general route of obtaining very stable octacoordinated non-oxovanadium( IV) complexes of the general formula VL2 (where H2L is a tetradentate ONNO donor) is presented. Six such complexes (1-6) are adequately characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, and various spectroscopic techniques. One of these compounds (1) has been structurally characterized. The molecule has crystallographic 4 symmetry and has a dodecahedral structure existing in a tetragonal space group P4n2. The non-oxo character and VL2 stoichiometry for all of the complexes are established from analytical and mass spectrometric data. In addition, the non-oxo character is clearly indicated by the complete absence of the strong nu(v=o) band in the 925-1025 cm(-1) region, which is a signature of all oxovanadium species. The complexes are quite stable in open air in the solid state and in solution, a phenomenon rarely observed in non-oxovanadium(IV) or bare vanadium(IV) complexes.

Dinuclear trioxidic [{VOL}(2)mu-O] (1-4) complexes were synthesized from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)] with an equimolar amount of H2L [H2L is the general abbreviation of hydrazone ligands (H2L1-4) derived from the condensation of benzoyl hydrazine with either 2-hydroxyacetophenone or its para substituted derivatives] in acetone or CH2Cl2 or acetonitrile. These V2O3L2 complexes were also obtained from the reaction of VOSO4 with H2L in the presence of two equivalents sodium acetate in aqueous-methanolic (50% V/V) medium and also from the decomposition of [(VO)-O-IV(L)(bipy/phen)] complexes in CH2Cl2 Solution. Black monoclinic crystals of 2 and 4 with C2/c space group were obtained from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)], respectively, with H2L2 and H2L4 in acetone in which the respective ligands are bonded meridionally to vanadium in their fully deprotonated enol forms. The V-O bond lengths follow the order: V-O(oxo) < V-O(oxo-bridged) < V-O(phenolate) < V-O(enolate). Complexes (1-4) are diamagnetic exhibiting LMCT transition band near 380 nm in CH2Cl2 solution and they are electroactive displaying a quasi-reversible reduction peak in the 0.14-0.30 V versus SCE region. The and the reduction peak potential (E-p(c)) values show linear relationships with the Hammett constant (sigma) of the substituents in the hydrazone ligands. These dinuclear complexes are converted to the corresponding mononuclear cis dioxo complexes K(H2O)(+)[(VO2)-O-V(L)](-) (5-8) and mixed-ligand [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] complexes on reaction, respectively, with two equivalents KOH in methanol and two equivalents 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq) in CHCl3. Ascorbic acid reduces the dioxovanadium(V) complexes reversibly under aerobic condition. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The reaction of the fulvalene titanium(III) hydride [{Ti(η5-C5H5)(μ-H)}2(μ-η5-η5-C10H8)] (1) with chlorine leads to [{Ti(η5-C5H5)(μ-Cl)}2(μ-η5-η5-C10H8)] (3) and [{Ti(η5-C5H5)Cl2}2(μ-η5-η5-C10H8)] (4). The reaction of 3 with azobenzene, in wet toluene, gives [{Ti(η5-C5H5)Cl}2(μ-O)(μ-η5-η5-C10H8)] (5) and 1,2-diphenyl hydrazine. The alkylation of 4 and the analogous zirconium complex [{Zr(η5-C5H55)Cl2}2(μ-η5-η5-C10H8)] (2) with LiCH2SiMe3 or LiCH3 permits isolation of the tetraalkyl derivatives [{M(η5-C5H5)(CH2SiMe3)2}2(μ-η5-η5-C10H8)] (M Ti (6); Zr (8)) and [{Ti(η5-C5H5)(CH3)2}2(μ-η5-η5C10H8)] (7). All the new fulvalene compounds were characterized by IR, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscope, and mass spectra and 5 by X-ray diffraction. The structure of 5 is very similar to that of the comparable TiIV compound [{Ti(η5-C5H5)2Cl}2(μ-O)] except for the smaller TiOTi angle (159.4° against 173.81°) and a significant deviation from linearity.

The syntheses and spectroscopic characterization of two 1,2,4-triazole-based oxovanadium(V) complexes are reported: 1(-)[VO(2)L1](-) and 2 [(VOL2)(2)(OMe)(2)] (where H(2)L1 = 3-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-5-(pyridin-2"-yl)-H-1-1,2,4-triazole, H3L2 = bis-3,5-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole). The ligand environment (N,N,O vs O,N,O) is found to have a profound influence on the properties and reactivity of the complexes formed. The presence of the triazolato ligand allows for pH tuning of the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties, as well as the interaction and stability of the complexes in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The vanadium(IV) oxidation states were generated electrochemically and characterized by UV-vis and EPR spectroscopies, For 2, under acidic conditions, rapid exchange of the methoxide ligands with solvent [in particular, in the vanadium(IV) redox state] was observed.

The present work reports the chemistry of a few oxidovanadium(IV) and (V) complexes of the ONS chelating ligand S-benzyl-beta-N-(2-hydroxyphenylethylidine) dithiocarbazate (H2L). Major objective of this work is to arrive at some general conclusions about the influence of binding environment generated by the replacement of an O-donor center by a S-donor point in a ligand (of a similar arrangement of the other O- and N-donor points) on the redox behavior and on the structural features of comparable [VO(OEt)(ONS)] and [VO(OEt)(ONO)] complexes. Synthesis, characterization by various physicochemical techniques (UV-Vis, IR, EPR and elemental analysis), exploration of electrochemical activity of the oxidovanadium(V) complex [(VO)-O-V(OEt) L] (1), the mixed ligand complex [(VO)-O-V(N-O)L] (3) (where N-O is the mono anion of 8-hydroxyquinoline) and a binuclear complex [(VO)-O-V(OEt)L](2)(mu-4,4'-bipy) (2) are reported. Similar studies on of mixed ligand oxidovanadium(IV) complexes of the formula [(VO)-O-V(N-N)L] (4,5) (where N-N = 2,2'-bipy and o-phen) are also presented here. The [(VO)-O-V(OEt)L] complex is pentacoordinated and distorted square pyramidal, while the [V-IV(N-N)L] complexes are hexacoordinated and octahedral. Structural features of the complex 1 were compared with the corresponding aspects of the previously reported analogous complex [(VO)-O-V(OEt)(ONO)] (1').

Several bis-malonatooxidovanadium(IV) complexes of the general type [M(2)(H2(O))(n)][VO(mal)(2)(H(2)O)] (where M = Li(1), Na(2), K(3), Cs(4) and NH4(5); n = 3.5, 1, 3, 1 and 1, respectively) were isolated in good yield and high purity. These complexes were fully characterized by various physicochemical techniques (elemental analysis, UV- Vis, IR, EPR, CV, etc.) complexes 1, 2 and 3 were structurally characterized by single crystal X- ray diffraction technique. In vivo antidiabetic properties of bis- malonato complexes 1, 2, 3 and 5 have been studied using Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Significant lowering of blood sugar level has been noticed. At the same time these complexes were found to regulate secondary pathophysiological complications like liver damage and lowering of the total antioxidant status (TAS) in diabetic rats. Results of these study are expected to a expand the possibility of designing new oxidovanadium(IV) complexes of O, O chelating ligands with significant antidiabetic properties

Two vanadium(V) complexes, [VO(L-1)]acac)] (1) and [VO(L-2)(acac)] (2), where H2L1 = N,N-bis(2-hydroxy-3-5-di-tert-butyl-benzyl)propylamine and H2L2 = 2,2'-selenobis(4,6-di-tert-butylphenol), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, V-51 NMR, both in the solid and in solution, and cyclic voltammetric studies. Single crystal X-ray studies reveal that in complex 1 the vanadium atom is octahedrally coordinated with an O5N donor environment, where the oxygen atom of the V-V=O moiety and the N atom of the ONO ligand occupy the axial sites while two oxygen atoms (O1 and O2) from the bisphenolate ligand and two oxygen atoms (O3 and O4) from the acac ligand occupy the equatorial plane. A similar bonding pattern has also been encountered for 2 with the exception that a Se atom instead of N is involved in weak bonding to the metal center. Both complexes showed reversible cyclic voltammeric responses and E-1/2 appears at -0.18 and 0.10 V versus NHE for complexes 1 and 2, respectively. The kinetics of oxidation of ascorbic acid by complex 1 were carried out in 50% MeCN-50% HO (v/v) at 25 degrees C. The high formation constant value, Q = 63 +/- 7 M-1, reveals that the reaction proceeds through the rapid formation of a H-bonded intermediate. The low k(2)Q(2)/k(1)Q(1) ratio (13.4) for 1 points out that there is extensive H-bonding between the oxygen atom of the V-V=O group and the OH group of ascorbic acid. In the title family, the ONO donor ligands are the acetylhydrazones of salicylaidehyde (H2L1) and 2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L2) (general abbreviation, H2L). The reaction of bis(acetylacetonato)oxovanadium(IV) with a mixture of tridentate H2L and a bidentate NN donor [e.g., 2,2'-bipyridine(bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline(phen), hereafter B] ligands in equimolar ratio afforded the tetravalent complexes of the type [(VO)-O-IV(L)(B)]; complexes (1)-(4) whereas, if B is replaced by 8-hydroxyquinoline(Hhq) (which is a bidentate ON donor ligand), the above reaction mixture yielded the pentavalent complexes of the type [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)]; complexes (5) and (6). Aerial oxygen is most likely the oxidant (for the oxidation of V-IV -> V-V) in the synthesis of pentavalent complexes (5) and (6). [(VO)-O-IV(L)(B)] complexes are one electron paramagnetic and display axial EPR spectra, while the [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] complexes are diamagnetic. The X-ray structure of [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(hq)] (6) indicates that H2L2 ligand is bonded with the vanadium meridionally in a tridentate dinegative fashion through its phenolic-O, enolic-O and imine-N atoms. The general bond length order is: oxo < phenolato < enolato. The V-O (enolato) bond is longer than V-O (phenolato) bond by similar to 0.07 angstrom and is identical with V-O (carboxylate) bond. H-1 NMR spectrum of (6) in CDCl3 solution indicates that the binding nature in the solid state is also retained in solution. Complexes (1)(4) display two ligand-field transitions in the visible region near 820 and 480 nm in DMF solution and exhibit irreversible oxidation peak near +0.60 V versus SCE in DMSO solution, while complexes (5) and (6) exhibit only LMCT band near 535 nm and display quasi-reversible one electron reduction peak near -0.10 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. The VO3+-VO2+ E-1/2 values shift considerably to more negative values when neutral NN donor is replaced by anionic ON donor species and it also provides better VO3+ binding via phenolato oxygen. For a given bidentate ligand, E-1/2 increases in the order: (L-2)(2-) < (L-1)(2-). (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Four tridentate dibasic ONO donor hydrazone ligands derived from the condensation of benzoylhydrazine with either 2-hydroxyacetophenone or its para substituted derivatives (H2L1-4, general abbreviation H2L) have been used as primary ligands and 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq, a bidentate monobasic ON donor species) has been used as auxiliary ligand. The reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)21 with H2L in methanol followed by the addition of Hhq in equimolar ratio under aerobic condition afforded the mixed-ligand oxovanadium(V) complexes of the type [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] (1-4) in excellent yield. The X-ray structure of the compound [(VO)-O-V(L-4)(hq)] (4) indicates that the H2L4 ligand is bonded with vanadium meridionally in a tridentate dinegative fashion through its deprotonated phenolic-O, deprotonated enolic-O and imine-N atoms. The V-O bond length order is: oxo < phenolato < enolato. H-1 NMR spectra of 4 in CDCl3 solution indicates that it's solid-state structure is retained in solution. Complexes are diamagnetic and exhibit only ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition band near 530 nm in CH2Cl2 solution in addition to intra-ligand pi-pi* transition band near 335 rim and they display quasi-reversible one electron reduction peak near -0.10 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. lambda(max) (for LMCT transition) and the reduction peak potential (E-p(c)) values of the complexes are found to be linearly related with the Hammett (sigma) constants of the substituents in the aryloxy ring of the hydrazone ligands. lambda(max) and E-p(c) values show large dependence d lambda(max)/d sigma = 32.54 nm and dE(p)(c)/d sigma = 0.19 V, respectively, on the Hammett constant. [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)] reacts with an equimolar amount of benzoyl hydrazones of 2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L1), 2-hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone (H2L2) and 5-chloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L4) in methanol to afford the penta-coordinated mixed-ligand methoxy bonded oxidovanadium(V) complexes [(VO)-O-V(L-1)-(OCHA(3))](1). [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(OCH3)](2), and [(VO)-O-V(L-4)(OCH3)](4), respectively, whereas, the similar reaction with the benzoyl hydrazone of 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyacetophenone (H2L3) producing only the hexa-coordinated dimethoxy-bridged dimeric complex [(VO)-O-V(L-3)(OCH3)](2) (3A). Similar type of hexa-coordinated dimeric analogue of 1 i.e., [(VO)-O-V(L-1)(OCH3)](2) (1A) was obtained from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)] with the equimolar amount of H2L1 in presence of half equivalent 4,4'-bipyridine in methanol while the decomposition of [(VO)-O-IV(L-2)(bipy)] complex in methanol afforded the dimeric analogue of 2 i.e., [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(OCH3)](2) (2A). All these dimeric complexes 1A-3A react with an excess amount of imidazole in methanol producing the respective monomeric complex. The X-ray structural analysis of 1-3 and their dimeric analogues 1A-3A indicates that the geometry around the vanadium center in the monomeric form is distorted square-pyramidal while that of their respective dimeric forms is distorted octahedral, where the ligands are bonded to vanadium meridionally in their fully deprotonated enol forms. Due to the formation of bridge, the V-O(methoxy) bond in the dimeric complexes is lengthened to such an extent that it becomes equal in length with the V-O(phenolate) bond in 3A and even longer in 1A and 2A, which is unprecedented. The H-1 NMR spectra of the complexes 1A-3A in CDCl3 solution, indicates that these dimeric complexes are converted appreciably into their respective monomeric form. Complexes are electro-active displaying one quasi-reversible reduction peak near +0.25 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. The E-1/2 values of the complexes show linear relationship with the Hammett parameter (sigma) of the substituents. All these VO3+-complexes are converted to the corresponding complexes with V2O34+ motif simply on refluxing them in acetone and to the complexes with VO2+ motif on reaction with 2 KOH in methanol. [(VO)-O-IV(acac) 2] reacts with the methanol solution of tridentate ONO donor hydrazone ligands (H2L1-4, general abbreviation H2L; are derived from the condensation of benzoyl hydrazine with 2-hydroxyacetophenone and its 5-substituted derivatives) in presence of neutral monodentate alkyl amine bases having stronger basicity than pyridine e. g., ethylamine, diethylamine, triethylamine and piperidine (general abbreviation B) to produce BH+[VO2L] (1-16) complexes. Five of these sixteen complexes are structurally characterized revealing that the vanadium is present in the anionic part of the molecule, [VO2L] in a distorted square pyramidal environment. The complexes 5, 6, 15 and 16 containing two H-atoms associated with the amine-N atom in their cationic part (e. g., diethylammonium and piperidinium ion) are involved in H-bonding with a neighboring molecule resulting in the formation of centrosymmetric dimers while the complex 12 (containing only one hydrogen atom in the cationic part) exhibits normal H-bonding. The nature of the H-bonds in each of the four centrosymmetric dimeric complexes is different. These complexes have potential catalytic activity in the aerial oxidation of L-ascorbic acid and are converted into the [VO(L)(hq)] complexes containing VO3+ motif on reaction with equimolar amount of 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq) in methanol.

Reaction of a group of N-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzaldimines, derived from 2-aminophenol and five para-substituted benzaldehydes (the para substituents are OCH3, CH3, H, Cl and NO2), with [Rh(PPh3)(3)Cl] in refluxing toluene in the presence of a base (NEW afforded a family of organometallic complexes of rhodium(III). The crystal structure of one complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography. In these complexes the benzaldimine ligands are coordinated to the metal center, via dissociation of the phenolic proton and the phenyl proton at the ortho position of the phenyl ring in the imine fragment, as dianionic tridentate C,N,O-donors, and the two PPh3 ligands are trans. The complexes are diamagnetic (low-spin d(6), S = 0) and show intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. Cyclic voltammetry shows a Rh(III)-Rh(IV) oxidation within 0.63-0.93 V vs SCE followed by an oxidation of the coordinated benzaldimine ligand. A reduction of the coordinated benzaldimine is also observed within -0.96 to -1.04 V vs SCE. Potential of the Rh(Ill)-Rh(IV) oxidation is found to be sensitive to the nature of the para-substituent. Reaction of 1,3-diaryltriazenes (abbreviated in general as HL-R, where R stands for the para-substituent in the aryl fragment and H stands for the dissociable hydrogen atom, R = OCH3, CH3, H, Cl, NO2) with [Rh(PPh3)(2)(CO)Cl] in ethanol in the presence of NEt3 produces a series of tris-diaryltriazenide complexes of rhodium of type [Rh(L-R)(3)], where the triazenes are coordinated to rhodium as monoanionic, bidentate N,N-donors. Structure of the [Rh(L-OCH3)(3)] complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes are diamagnetic, and show characteristic H-1 NMR signals and intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. They also fluoresce in the visible region under ambient condition while excited at around 400 nm. Cyclic voltammetry on these complexes shows a Rh(III)-Rh(IV) oxidation (within 0.84-1.67 V vs SCE), followed by an oxidation of the coordinated tri- and azene ligand (except the R = NO2 complex). An irreversible reduction of the coordinated triazene is also observed for all the complexes below -1.03 V vs SCE.

Reaction of 2-(4'-R-phenylazo)-4-methylphenols (R = OCH3, CH3, H, Cl, and NO2) with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] affords a family of five ruthenium(III) complexes, containing a 2-(arylazo)phenolate ligand forming a six-membered chelate ring and a tetradentate ligand formed from two 2-(arylazo) phenols via an unusual C-C coupling linki.ng the two ortho carbons of the phenyl rings in the arylazo fragment. A similar reaction with 2-(2'-methylphenylazo)-4-methylphenol with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] has afforded a similar complex, in which one 2-(2'-methylphenylazo)-4-methylphenolate ligand is coordinated forming a six-membered chelate ring, and the other two ligands have undergone the C-C coupling reaction, and the coupled species is coordinated as a tetradentate ligand forming a five-membered N,O-chelate ring, a nine-membered N,N-chelate ring, and another five-membered chelate ring. Reaction of 2-(2',6'-dimethylphenylazo)-4-methylphenol with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] has afforded a complex in which two 2-(2',6'-dimethylphenylazo)-4-methylphenols are coordinated as bidentate N,O-donors forming five- and six-membered chelate rings, while the third one has undergone cleavage across the N=N bond, and the phenolate fragment, thus generated, remains coordinated to the metal center in the iminosemiquinonate form. Structures of four selected complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The first six complexes are one-electron paramagnetic and show rhombic ESR spectra. The last complex is diamagnetic and shows characteristic H-1 NMR signals. All the complexes show intense charge-transfer transitions in the visible region and a Ru(III)-Ru(IV) oxidation on the positive side of SCE and a Ru(III)-Ru(II) reduction on the negative side.

Several cis-dioxomolybdenum complexes of two tridentate ONS chelating ligands H2L1 and H2L2 ( obtained by condensation of S-benzyl and S-methyl dithiocarbazates with 2-hydroxyacetophenone) have been prepared and characterized. Complexes 1 and 2 are found to be of the form MoO2 (CH3OH)L-1.CH3OH and MoO2L, respectively, (where L2-=dianion of H2L1 and H2L2). The sixth coordination site of the complexes acts as a binding site for various neutral monodentate Lewis bases, B, forming complexes 3 - 10 of the type MoO2LB (where B=gamma-picoline, imidazole, thiophene, THF). The complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, various spectroscopic techniques, ( UV-Vis, IR and H-1 NMR), measurement of magnetic susceptibility at room temperature, molar conductivity in solution and by cyclic voltammetry. Two of the complexes MoO2(CH3OH)L-1.CH3OH (1) and MoO2L1(imz) (5) were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Oxo abstruction reactions of 1 and 5 led to formation of oxomolybdenum(IV) complex of the MoOL type.
