In countries that have experienced rapid economic development, the need to establish more efficient markets in which private property can be constructed has induced some innovative solutions. One such solution is the phenomenon of a pre-sales market of the kind that can be observed in Taiwan, Korea, and more recently in China. Developers sell their property before building is started in order to acquire financing for the development companies. This paper discusses the process and, by recognising the analogy between the pre-sales market and forwards markets, analyses the implications for developers

This paper examines how innovation-related capabilities for production, design and marketing develop at the subsidiary level within multinational enterprises (MNEs). We focus on how subsidiary autonomy and changing opportunities to access internal (MNE) and external (host country) sources of capability contribute in a combined way to the accumulation of specialist capabilities in five Taiwan-based MNE subsidiaries in the semiconductor industry. Longitudinal analysis shows how the accumulation process is subject to discontinuities, as functional divisions are (re)opened and closed during the lifetime of the subsidiary. A composite set of innovation output measures also shows significant variations in within-function levels of capability across our sample. We conclude that subsidiary specialisation and unique subsidiary-specific advantages have evolved in a way that is strongly influenced by the above factors.

Landscape narrative, combining landscape and narrative, has been employed to create storytelling layouts and interpretive information in some famous botanic gardens. In order to assess the educational effectiveness of using "landscape narrative" in landscape design, the Heng-Chun Tropical Botanical Garden in Taiwan was chosen as research target for an empirical study. Based on cognitive theory and the affective responses of environmental psychology, computer simulations and video recordings were used to create five themed display areas with landscape narrative elements. Two groups of pupils watched simulated films. The pupils were then given an evaluation test and questionnaire, to determine the effectiveness of the landscape narrative. When the content was well associated and matched with the narrative landscape, the comprehension and retention of content was increased significantly. The results also indicated that visual preference of narrative landscape scenes was increased. This empirical study can be regarded as a successful model of integrating landscape narrative and interpretation practice that can be applied to the design of new theme displays in botanic gardens to improve both the effectiveness of interpretation plans and the visual preference of visitors. Multi-rate multicarrier DS-CDMA is a potentially attractive multiple access method for future wireless networks that must support multimedia, and thus multi-rate, traffic. Considering that high performance detection such as coherent demodulation needs the explicit knowledge of the channel, this paper proposes a subspace-based blind adaptive algorithm for timing acquisition and channel estimation in asynchronous multirate multicarrier DS-CDMA systems, which is applicable to both multicode and variable spreading factor systems.

This paper analyzes the delay performance of Enhanced relay-enabled Distributed Coordination Function (ErDCF) for wireless ad hoc networks under ideal condition and in the presence of transmission errors. Relays are nodes capable of supporting high data rates for other low data rate nodes. In ideal channel ErDCF achieves higher throughput and reduced energy consumption compared to IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF). This gain is still maintained in the presence of errors. It is also expected of relays to reduce the delay. However, the impact on the delay behavior of ErDCF under transmission errors is not known. In this work, we have presented the impact of transmission errors on delay. It turns out that under transmission errors of sufficient magnitude to increase dropped packets, packet delay is reduced. This is due to increase in the probability of failure. As a result the packet drop time increases, thus reflecting the throughput degradation.
