Three new phenylmercury(II) and one mercury(II) dithiocarbamate complexes viz. PhHg S2CN(PyCH2) Bz (1), PhHg S2CN(PyCH2)CH3 (2), PhHg S2CN(Bz)CH3 (3), and [Hg (NCS2(PyCH2)Bz)(2)] (4) (Py = pyridine; Bz = benzyl) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, electronic absorption, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The crystal structures of 1, 2 and 3 showed a linear S-Hg-C core at the centre of the molecule, in which the metal atom is bound to the sulfur atom of the dithiocarbamate ligand and a carbon atom of the aromatic ring. In contrast the crystal structure of 4 showed a linear S-Hg-S core at the Hg(II) centre of the molecule. Weak intermolecular Hg center dot center dot center dot N (Py) interactions link molecules into a linear chain in the case of 1, whereas chains of dimers are formed in 2 through intermolecular Hg center dot center dot center dot N (Py) and Hg center dot center dot center dot S interactions. 3 forms a conventional face-to-edge dimeric structure through intermolecular Hg center dot center dot center dot S secondary bonding and 4 forms a linear chain of dimers through face-to-face Hg center dot center dot center dot S secondary bonding. In order to elucidate the nature of these secondary bonding interactions and the electronic absorption spectra of the complexes, ab initio quantum chemical calculations at the MP2 level and density functional theory calculations were carried out for 1-3. Complexes 1 and 2 exhibited photoluminescent properties in the solid state as well as in the solution phase. Studies indicate that Hg center dot center dot center dot S interactions decrease and Hg center dot center dot center dot N interactions increase the chances of photoluminescence in the solid phase

In contrast to the corresponding hydroxyiodination reactions, the reaction of acetoxycyclohex-2-ene 1 with N-PSP in the presence of water shows little regiocontrol, but is highly diastereoselective. However, the same reaction of the (R)-phenylglycinate derivative of (+/-)-cyclohexen-3-ol is highly diastereoselective, and regioselective. A hydrogen-bonding interaction is proposed to rationalize these differing selectivities. (c) 2007 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The trans-[Cu2L2Cl2] (1), and cis-[Cu2L2Cl2]·H2O (2) isomers of a diphenoxido bridged Cu2O2 core have been synthesized using a tridentate reduced Schiff base ligand 2-[(2-dimethylamino-ethylamino)-methyl]-phenol. The geometry around Cu(II) is intermediate between square pyramid and trigonal bipyramid (Addison parameter, tau = 0.463) in 1 but nearly square pyramidal (tau = 0.049) in 2. The chloride ions are coordinated to Cu(II) and are trans oriented in 1 but cis oriented in 2. Both isomers have been optimized using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and it is found that the trans isomer is 7.2 kcal mol(-1) more favorable than the cis isomer. However, the hydrogen bonding interaction of crystallized water molecule with chloride ions compensates for the energy difference and stabilizes the cis isomer. Both complexes have been converted to a very rare phenoxido-azido bridged trinuclear species, [Cu3L2(mu(1,1)-N-3)(2)(H2O)(2)(ClO4)(2)] (3) which has also been characterized structurally. All the complexes are antiferromagnetically coupled but the magnitude of the coupling constants are significantly different (J = -156.60, -652.31, and -31.54 cm(-1) for 1, 2, and 3 respectively). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have also been performed to gain further insight into the qualitative theoretical interpretation on the overall magnetic behavior of the complexes.

An elastomeric, supramolecular healable polymer blend, comprising a chain-folding polyimide and a telechelic polyurethane with pyrenyl endgroups, is compatibilised by aromatic π−π stacking between the π-electron-deficient diimide groups and the π-electron-rich pyrenyl units. This inter-polymer interaction is key to forming a tough, healable, elastomeric material. Variable temperature FTIR analysis of the bulk material also conclusively demonstrates the presence of hydrogen bonding, which complements the π–π stacking interactions. Variable temperature SAXS analysis shows that the healable polymeric blend has a nanophase-separated morphology, and that the X-ray contrast between the two types of domain increases with increasing temperature, a feature that is repeatable over several heating and cooling cycles. A fractured sample of this material reproducibly regains more than 95% of the tensile modulus, 91% of the elongation to break, and 77% of the modulus of toughness of the pristine material.

The interaction between four flavonoids (catechin, epicatechin, rutin and quercetin) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated using tryptophan fluorescence quenching. Quenching constants were determined using the Stern-Volmer equation to provide a measure of the binding affinity between the flavonoids and BSA. The binding affinity was found to be strongest for quercetin, and ranked in the order quercetin>rutin>epicatechin=catechin. The pH in the range of 5 to 7.4 does not affect significantly (p<0.05) the association of rutin, epicatechin and catechin with BSA, but quercetin exhibited a stronger affinity at pH 7.4 than at lower pH (p<0.05). Quercetin has a total quenching effect on BSA tryptophan fluorescence at a molar ratio of 10:1 and rutin at approximately 25:1. However, epicatechin and catechin did not fully quench tryptophan fluorescence over the concentration range studied. Furthermore, the data suggested that the association between flavonoids and BSA did not change molecular conformation of BSA and that hydrogen bonding, ionic and hydrophobic interaction are equally important driving forces for protein-flavonoid association.

A Cu-II complex of protonated 4,4'-bipyridine (Hbyp) and 2-picolinate (pic), [Cu-2(pic)(3)(Hbyp)(H2O)(ClO4)(2)], has been synthesised and characterised by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The structure consists of two copper atoms that have different environments, bridged by a carboxylate group. The equatorial plane is formed by the two bidentate picolinate groups in one Cu-II, and one picolinate, one monodentate 4,4'-bipyridyl ligand and a water molecule in the other. Each copper atom is also weakly bonded to a perchlorate anion in an axial position. One of the coordinated perchlorate groups displays anion-pi interaction with the coordinated pyridine ring. The noncoordinated carboxylate oxygen is involved in lone-pair (l.p.)-pi interaction with the protonated pyridine ring. In addition there are pi-pi and H-bonding interactions in the structure. Bader's theory of "atoms in molecules" (AIM) is used to characterise the anion-pi and l.p.-pi interactions observed in the solid state. A high-level ab initio study (RI-MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory) has been performed to analyse the anion-pi binding affinity of the pyridine ring when it is coordinated to a transition metal and also when the other pyridine ring of the 4,4'-bipyridine moiety is protonated. Theoretical investigations support the experimental findings of an intricate network of intermolecular interactions, which is characterised in the studied complex, and also indicate that protonation as well as coordination to the transition metal have important roles in influencing the pi-binding properties of the aromatic ring. Three supramolecular complexes of Co(II) using SCN-/SeCN- in combination with 4,4'-dipyridyl-N,N'-dioxide (dpyo), i.e., {[Co(SCN)(2)(dpyo)(2)].(dpyo)}(n) ( 1), {[Co(SCN)(2)(dpyo)(H2O)(2)].(H2O)}(n) ( 2), {[Co(SeCN)(2)(dpyo)(H2O)(2)]center dot(H2O)}(n) ( 3), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Complex 1 is a rare example of a dpyo bridged two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer, and pi-stacked dpyo supramolecular rods are generated by the lattice dpyo, passing through the rhombic grid of stacked layers, resulting in a three-dimensional (3D) superstructure. Complexes 2 and 3 are isomorphous one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers [-Co-dpyo-Co-] that undergo self-assembly leading to a bilayer architecture derived through an R-2(2)(8) H-bonding synthon between coordinated water and dpyo oxygen. A reinvestigation of coordination polymers [Mn(SCN)(2)(dpyo)( H2O)(MeOH)](n) ( 4) and {[Fe(SCN)(2)(dpyo)(H2O)(2)]center dot(H2O)}(n) ( 5) reported recently by our group [ Manna et al. Indian J. Chem. 2006, 45A, 1813] reveals brick wall topology rather than bilayer architecture is due to the decisive role of S center dot center dot center dot S/Se center dot center dot center dot Se interactions in determining the helical nature in 4 and 5 as compared to zigzag polymeric chains in 2 and 3, although the same R-2(2)(8) synthon is responsible for supramolecular assembly in these complexes.

Ibuprofen (IB), a BCS Class II compound, is a highly crystalline substance with poor solubility properties. Here we report on the disruption of this crystalline structure upon intimate contact with the polymeric carrier cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-CL) facilitated by low energy simple mixing. Whilst strong molecular interactions between APIs and carriers within delivery systems would be expected on melting or through solvent depositions, this is not the case with less energetic mixing. Simple mixing of the two compounds resulted in a significant decrease in the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) melting enthalpy for IB, indicating that approximately 30% of the crystalline content was disordered. This structural change was confirmed by broadening and intensity diminution of characteristic IB X-ray powder diffractometry (PXRD) peaks. Unexpectedly, the crystalline content of the drug continued to decrease upon storage under ambient conditions. The molecular environment of the mixture was further investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy. These data suggest that the primary interaction between these components of the physical mix is hydrogen bonding, with a secondary mechanism involving electrostatic/hydrophobic interactions through the IB benzene ring. Such interactions and subsequent loss of crystallinity could confer a dissolution rate advantage for IB. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three new Mn(II) coordination compounds {[Mn(NCNCN)2(azpy)]·0.5azpy}n (1), {[Mn(NCS)2(azpy)(CH3OH)2]·azpy}n (2), and [Mn(azpy)2(H2O)4][Mn(azpy)(H2O)5]·4PF6·H2O·5.5azpy (3) (where azpy = 4,4'-azobis-(pyridine)) have been synthesized by self-assembly of the primary ligands, dicyanamide, thiocyanate, and hexafluorophosphate, respectively, together with azpy as the secondary spacer. All three complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, thermal analyses, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The structural analyses reveal that complex 1 forms a two-dimensional (2D) grid sheet motif These sheets assemble to form a microporous framework that incorporates coordination-free azpy by host-guest pi center dot center dot center dot pi. and C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonding interactions. Complex 2 features azpy bridged one-dimensional (ID) chains of centrosymmetric [Mn(NCS)(2)(CH3OH)(2)} units which form a 2D porous sheet via a CH3 center dot center dot center dot pi supramolecular interaction. A guest azpy molecule is incorporated within the pores by strong H-bonding interactions. Complex 3 affords a 0-D motif with two monomeric Mn(II) units in the asymmetric unit. There exist pi center dot center dot center dot pi, anion center dot center dot center dot pi, and strong hydrogen bonding interactions between the azpy, water, and the anions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, at the M06/6-31+G* level of theory, are used to characterize a great variety of interactions that explicitly show the importance of host-guest supramolecular interactions for the stabilization of coordination compounds and creation of the fascinating three-dimensional (3D) architecture of the title compounds.

The affinity of anthocyanins for human serum albumin (HSA) was determined by a fluorescence quenching method. The effects of pH and structure of anthocyanins on the binding constants were studied. The constants for binding of anthocyanins to HSA ranged from 1.08 x 10^5 M-1 to 13.16 x 10^5 M-1. A hydrophobic effect at acidic pH was shown by the relatively high positive entropy values under the conditions studied. Electrostatic interactions including hydrogen bonding contributed to the binding at pH 7.4. The effect of structure of anthocyanins on the affinity was pH dependent, particularly the effect of additional hydroxyl substituents. Hydroxyl substituents and glycosylation of anthocyanins decreased the affinity for binding to HSA at lower pH (especially pH 4), but increased the strength of binding at pH 7.4. In contrast, methylation of a hydroxyl group enhanced the binding at acidic pH, while this substitution reduced the strength of binding at pH 7.4. This paper has shown that changes in anthocyanin structure or reductions in pH, which may occur in the region of inflammatory sites, have an effect of the binding of anthocyanins to HSA.

We investigate the effect of a secondary star magnetic field on the accretion disc dynamics of dwarf novae. Simulations have been carried out with a particle code and a dipolar magnetic field structure. The magnetic field acts to remove angular momentum from the disc material, increasing the inward mass flow. This makes the accretion disc more centrally condensed, causing a reduction in the recurrence time for dwarf nova outbursts. We have produced Doppler tomograms and light curves which may be compared with observations. These tomograms are significantly different from those produced in the absence of a magnetic field on the secondary. We derive an upper limit to the magnetic moment of the secondary star in UGem of mu_2<2x10^32 A m^2. The magnetic truncation of the accretion disc produces resonance phenomena similar to those seen in the superoutbursts of SUUMa systems. While these have not been observed for systems like UGem, observations of the SUUMa systems provide us with a useful diagnostic of the disc-field interaction. We are able to place an upper limit on the magnetic moment of the secondary in ZCha of mu_2<1x10^30 A m^2.
