The kinetics of the photodimerisation reactions of the 2- and 4-β-halogeno-derivatives of trans-cinnamic acid (where the halogen is fluorine, chlorine or bromine) have been investigated by infrared microspectroscopy. It is found that none of the reactions proceed to 100% yield. This is in line with a reaction mechanism developed by Wernick and his co-workers that postulates the formation of isolated monomers within the solid, which cannot react. β-4-Bromo and β-4-chloro-trans-cinnamic acids show approximately first order kinetics, although in both cases the reaction accelerates somewhat as it proceeds. First order kinetics is explained in terms of a reaction between one excited- and one ground-state monomer molecule, while the acceleration of the reaction implies that it is promoted as defects are formed within the crystal. By contrast β-2-chloro-trans-cinnamic acid shows a strongly accelerating reaction which models closely to the contracting cube equation. β-2-Fluoro- and β-4-fluoro-trans-cinnamic acids show a close match to first order kinetics. The 4-fluoro-derivative, however, shows a reaction that proceeds via a structural intermediate. The difference in behaviour between the 2-fluoro- and 4-fluoro-derivative may be due to different C–HF hydrogen bonds observed within these single-crystalline starting materials.

Reaction of single crystals of benzoic and trans-cinnamic acids with 200 Torr pressure of ammonia gas in a sealed glass bulb at 20 degrees C generates the corresponding ammonium salts; there is no sign of any 1:2 adduct as has been reported previously for related systems. Isotopic substitution using ND3 has been used to aid identification of the products. Adipic acid likewise reacts with NH3 gas to form a product in which ammonium salts are formed at both carboxylic acid groups. Reaction of 0.5 Torr pressure of NO2 gas with single crystals of 9-methylanthracene and 9-anthracenemethanol in a flow system generates nitrated products where the nitro group appears to be attached at the 10-position, i.e. the position trans to the methyl or methoxy substituent on the central ring. Isotopic substitution using (NO2)-N-15 has been used to confirm the identity of the bands arising from the coordinated NO2 group. The products formed when single crystals of hydantoin are reacted with NO2 gas under similar conditions depend on the temperature of the reaction. At 20 degrees C, a nitrated product is formed, but at 65 degrees C this gives way to a product containing no nitro groups. The findings show the general applicability of infrared microspectroscopy to a study of gas-solid reactions of organic single crystals. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A low-temperature ionothermal method for the facile synthesis of the halide carbonate, Ba3Cl4CO3, in single-crystalline form has been developed. This has enabled the first determination of the crystal structure of this material to be carried out. Analysis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data indicates that barium chloride carbonate crystallises in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (Z=4), with a=8.4074(11), b=9.5886(12), c=12.4833(15) Å (Rw=0.0392). It exhibits a complex structure in which a three-dimensional network is formed from cross-linking of chains of anion-centred octahedra that share faces.

This investigation examines metal release from freshwater sediment using sequential extraction and single-step cold-acid leaching. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn released using a standard 3-step sequential extraction (Rauret et al., 1999) are compared to those released using a 0.5 M HCl; leach. The results show that the three sediments behave in very different ways when subject to the same leaching experiments: the cold-acid extraction appears to remove higher relative concentrations of metals from the iron-rich sediment than from the other two sediments. Cold-acid extraction appears to be more effective at removing metals from sediments with crystalline iron oxides than the "reducible" step of the sequential extraction. The results show that a single-step acid leach can be just as effective as sequential extractions at removing metals from sediment and are a great deal less time-consuming.

Gallaborane (GaBH6, 1), synthesized by the metathesis of LiBH4 with [H2GaCl]n at ca. 250 K, has been characterized by chemical analysis and by its IR and 1H and 11B NMR spectra. The IR spectrum of the vapor at low pressure implies the presence of only one species, viz. H2Ga(μ-H)2BH2, with a diborane-like structure conforming to C2v symmetry. The structure of this molecule has been determined by gas-phase electron diffraction (GED) measurements afforced by the results of ab initio molecular orbital calculations. Hence the principal distances (rα in Å) and angles ( α in deg) are as follows: r(Ga•••B), 2.197(3); r(Ga−Ht), 1.555(6); r(Ga−Hb), 1.800(6); r(B−Ht), 1.189(7); r(B−Hb), 1.286(7); Hb−Ga−Hb, 71.6(4); and Hb−B−Hb, 110.0(5) (t = terminal, b = bridging). Aggregation of the molecules occurs in the condensed phases. X-ray crystallographic studies of a single crystal at 110 K reveal a polymeric network with helical chains made up of alternating pseudotetrahedral GaH4 and BH4 units linked through single hydrogen bridges; the average Ga•••B distance is now 2.473(7) Å. The compound decomposes in the condensed phases at temperatures exceeding ca. 240 K with the formation of elemental Ga and H2 and B2H6. The reactions with NH3, Me3N, and Me3P are also described.

Elongated crystalline particles formed as by-products during poly(arylene ether ketone) synthesis by electrophilic precipitation-polycondensation of 4,4'-diphenoxybenzophenone with terephthaloyl chloride or isophthaloyl chloride, thought previously to be polymer-whiskers, have now been identified as macrocyclic phases. Single crystal X-ray analysis of the needle-like particles formed in the reaction with terephthaloyl chloride, using the microdiffraction technique with synchrotron radiation, revealed that they consist of a macrocylic compound containing ten phenylene units, i.e. the [2 + 2] cyclic dimer. An analogous structure has also been demonstrated for the corresponding macrocycle derived from the reaction of 4,4-diphenoxybenzophenone with isophthaloyl chloride. Chloroform extraction of the products of the two polycondensations dissolved the macrocyclic material (but not the linear polymer), and analysis of the extracts by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry demonstrated the presence in both cases of homologous families of macrocyclic products. Higher yields of macrocycles were obtained under pseudo-high dilution conditions, enabling the [2 + 2] cyclodimers from reactions of 4,4'-diphenoxybenzophenone with both terephthaloyl and isophthaloyl chloride to be isolated as pure compounds and fully characterised. We present a new methodology that couples neutron diffraction experiments over a wide Q range with single chain modelling in order to explore, in a quantitative manner, the intrachain organization of non-crystalline polymers. The technique is based on the assignment of parameters describing the chemical, geometric and conformational characteristics of the polymeric chain, and on the variation of these parameters to minimize the difference between the predicted and experimental diffraction patterns. The method is successfully applied to the study of molten poly(tetrafluoroethylene) at two different temperatures, and provides unambiguous information on the configuration of the chain and its degree of flexibility. From analysis of the experimental data a model is derived with CC and CF bond lengths of 1.58 and 1.36 Å, respectively, a backbone valence angle of 110° and a torsional angle distribution which is characterized by four isometric states, namely a split trans state at ± 18°, giving rise to a helical chain conformation, and two gauche states at ± 112°. The probability of trans conformers is 0.86 at T = 350°C, which decreases slightly to 0.84 at T = 400°C. Correspondingly, the chain segments are characterized by long all-trans sequences with random changes in sign, rather anisotropic in nature, which give rise to a rather stiff chain. We compare the results of this quantitative analysis of the experimental scattering data with the theoretical predictions of both force fields and molecular orbital conformation energy calculations.
